  1. The building is called Vreugd en Rust, Dutch for "Peace and Rest," and the name does a lot of work. This boutique hotel outside The Hague occupies an 18th-century country estate and national monument, where rococo staircases and stucco ceilings sit alongside Hästens beds and velvet upholstery. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. Rooms lean fresher than the ground floor suggests, and breakfast arrives under ornate chandeliers with garden views.

  2. The old KLM headquarters, still wearing its 1930s brick-and-concrete suit, is now a hotel with a Michelin Key. The revolving door, the original aviation-era ceilings near the lifts, even the old KLM reception desks are still here, which gives the place a mood that no decorator could fake. Rooms run warm in burnt orange and retro pattern, with art pulled from a 500-piece collection. An on-site bar and restaurant keep you fed from morning onward.

  3. A former bank converted into a boutique hotel, with enough of the original bones left to feel deliberate rather than themed: decorative columns, brass detailing, period glasswork, and guest room headboards cut from salvaged oak paneling. The vault one floor down is now the Gold Bar. Outside, the hotel faces Palace Noordeinde, a working royal residence, with the Mauritshuis a short walk away. The Michelin Guide has it in their selected hotels.

  4. A former bank headquarters in The Hague's historic center, all stately stone and high ceilings, now running as a boutique hotel where the rooms lean contemporary without forgetting where they are. Botanica Kitchen & Bar spills onto a garden terrace, and the Ultramarijn Wonderbar does cocktails themed around seafaring, which is either charming or a lot depending on your mood. A nearby spa covers the wellness gap.

  5. The grand dame of The Hague sits on the stately Lange Voorhout boulevard, its marble columns, patterned carpets, and chandelier-hung restaurant making a strong case that understated was never really the point here. This grand hotel had Jacques Garcia redesign the rooms, so they manage to feel genuinely contemporary while still nodding to the 19th-century bones. A spa, fitness center, and afternoon high tea round out the offer for guests who like their history comfortable.

  7. The staircase was designed by Berlage, and the building has been a boys' school, a women-run hotel, and home to the city's first vegetarian restaurant, more or less in that order. Now a boutique hotel under Sircle Collection, it sits across from the Royal Gardens in the Hofkwartier, with 160-year-old bones dressed in deep colors, sculptural lighting, and carefully chosen art. A Michelin Selected Hotel.

  8. A tiny flower shop at the entrance is the first hint that this 57-room boutique hotel takes its decorating seriously, in the most gleefully unserious way. Each room at The Collector has its own cabinet-of-curiosities theme, rubber ducks, cassette tapes, marbles, with marble bathrooms and custom portraits made from objects that have no business being in a frame. Formal is not the vibe here.

  9. A warm cup of soup at check-in sets the tone at this compact hotel a short walk from The Hague Central Station. The ground floor runs as a neighborhood café, serving good coffee and homemade Limburg-style pie to a mix of travelers and locals who wander in with no intention of staying the night. Rooms upstairs are calm and unfussy, with good beds and rain showers doing the quiet work.

    The awards

  10. A Cali-Baja restaurant on the ground floor, co-working nooks, and a coffee counter that never closes: TRIBE Den Haag keeps the pitch simple. Rooms are deliberately uniform, with good beds, proper bathrooms, fast WiFi, and Kevin Murphy toiletries as the one small luxury. The Dutch Parliament and Palace Noordeinde are both an easy walk away, which gives this stripped-back hotel a more interesting address than its no-fuss branding lets on.

    The awards

  11. A three-century-old coaching inn on the old Delft-to-Hague road, now hemmed in by glass tech offices but still arriving like a gentle ambush of calm. Inside, the heritage bones have been kept and the rest thoroughly reinvented: minimalist interiors, design furniture, saturated color. Only 35 rooms, a full spa with pool and saunas, and a Parisian bistro on site. The Michelin Guide has it in its selected hotels.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
