The best bistros in Milan, according to the experts: 50 Top Italy, Michelin Guide, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Altatto comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Milano.

More Less

Trattoria del Nuovo Macello and Linfa hold the next two places. 50 Top Italy and Michelin Guide show up on more of this list than any other guide.

Departments

  1. A small, intimate vegetarian bistro in the Navigli area where the two chefs change the menu regularly enough that returning feels like a different meal. Tasting menus run four or nine courses, and staff walk through each dish with the kind of attention that could tip into earnest if the food weren't so good-looking. The Michelin Guide has selected it, and 50 Top Italy ranks it first among vegetable bistros.

  2. Rank 2. Trattoria del Nuovo Macello

    Contemporary Milanese Trattoria

A cotoletta so thick it borders on a statement, this is a modern trattoria that takes Milanese cooking seriously without taking itself too seriously. Risotto alla milanese, ravioli, the classics are all here, restated with care rather than reinvented beyond recognition. The room is warm and unhurried, the kind of place where the service feels like it knows you even on a first visit. An extensive wine list keeps things moving.

  3. Gluten-free, fully vegan, and somehow not the least bit preachy about either, Linfa is a plant-based restaurant in Milan where soft colors, scattered greenery, and a lounge vibe make the room feel more like somewhere you'd linger than somewhere you'd atone. The menu swings from pasta to sushi to a vegetable riff on a flambéed steak, which is the kind of range that keeps skeptics at the table. An eight-course tasting menu runs alongside à la carte.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
