The Best Places in Shimogyo Ward

  1. Rank 1. Germoglio

    Piedmontese

    The awards

  2. A one-star Michelin kaiseki counter in Shimogyo where the name, "Wagokoro," roughly translates to a spirit that soothes. The chef trained deep in the Kyoto tradition and it shows: handmade thick-fried tofu and fish cake arrive in broths that taste like someone spent years learning restraint. Presentation is natural rather than architectural, the food landing the way a well-cooked meal at a serious household might, if that household had a Michelin star.

  4. Rank 3. Manjuji Hakuran

    Nagasaki Japanese

A kappo restaurant in Shimogyo where the prix fixe menu is essentially a love letter to Nagasaki, written by a chef from the Goto Islands who moved to Kyoto and never stopped cooking like he was home. The fish arrives as sashimi and broth courses, and hatoshi, minced shrimp pressed between slices of fried toast, shows up like a happy anachronism. One Michelin star.

  5. Rank 3. Sen

    Japanese

A Michelin-starred kaiseki restaurant where the chef reportedly changes ingredients mid-course based on what guests are talking about, which is either very attentive or slightly unnerving, depending on your table conversation. The meal closes with a choose-your-own comfort food round of mackerel sushi, chazuke, or ramen. During the Gion Festival, a replica of the parade's lead float appears inside, because why not.

  6. Rank 3. YOKOI

    Japanese

A cup of Kakegawa tea from the chef's home prefecture arrives before anything else, setting the tone for what follows. This is a kaiseki-style Japanese dining room where fruit meets fish and vegetables, leaning on natural sweetness and acidity to carry the courses forward. A hand-rolled sushi of sea urchin and tuna arrives mid-meal to shift the mood, which is exactly the kind of considered gesture that earned this place a Michelin star.

  9. A French bistro where the whole room is white, softened by flea-market antiques and a single pendant light doing real work. The chef cooks classic French, paring things down until the ingredient carries the sentence, and is devoted enough to Bincho charcoal to bake the bread over it. The name means white asparagus, which answers the question you were about to ask about spring. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, tucked into Shimogyo.

  11. Rank 9. Izugen

    Kyoto

A maiko portrait hangs on the wall because the third-generation chef fell for it on sight and considers her good luck, which sets the tone for this old-school Kyoto sushi shop perfectly. No counter, no hand-formed nigiri: the tradition here is pressed and rolled, the rice cooked with kombu and bonito. The mixed platter covers all three styles at once. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place locals treat like a standing appointment.

  13. An izakaya where the meal opens with a hassun platter so you can graze through appetizers while you figure out what you actually want to drink. The kitchen borrows its sensibility from ryotei cuisine, which means little flourishes like sashimi paired with a liver-blended soy sauce, or fried dishes with a perilla pickle tartar. Local sakes from around Japan arrive in small pours to keep pace with the food. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand.

  14. Rank 9. Sonoba

    Japanese Noodle Shop

A soba shop where the chef mills his own buckwheat, throws the pottery the noodles arrive on, and designed the industrial interior from recycled materials, which is either admirable or exhausting depending on your temperament. The monthly seasonal soba pairs the handmade noodles with whatever the market offers, from bamboo shoots to oysters. Michelin has given it a Bib Gourmand, and the place earns it without trying to look like it cares.

  15. A casual Japanese meal spot in Shimogyo-ku where the menu sets you up just enough to be pleasantly surprised by what arrives. The kitchen leans into simple, everyday washoku cooking, then quietly subverts it: potato salad made with whole fluffy potatoes in a creamy sauce, a minced cutlet with a whisper of duck, a thick sabazushi roll that rewards a second look. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place that earns it without trying to look like it's trying.

  17. Rank 16. Kanzan

    Japanese

The appetizer platters arrive on small rafts and baskets the chef wove himself, which tells you most of what you need to know about this intimate Kyoto kaiseki restaurant. The chef grew up above an antique shop in Gion, and the heirloom vessels he chooses for each dish carry the same weight as the cooking. Menus shift with what he finds in the fields near Shugakuin, so the vegetables taste like they were pulled that morning, because they were.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
