The 55 Best Places to Drink and Stay in Philadelphia

The best places to drink and stay in Philadelphia, according to the experts: Bon Appétit, Esquire, and Philadelphia Magazine have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Almanac comes out on top.

More Less

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center and The Rittenhouse Hotel hold the next two places. Eater and Michelin Guide show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  2. The infinity pool on the 57th floor doesn't drain into the city below, though it looks like it might. This Four Seasons occupies the top twelve floors of Philadelphia's tallest tower, which means the views from your room stretch across the whole skyline. Norman Foster designed the building, and the hotel itself plays the warm-modernist card well, with light bouncing through mirrors and enormous arrangements of flowers softening all that glass. It holds a Michelin two-key designation and a Forbes Four Star rating.

  3. Rooms here run from around 450 to 1,700 square feet, which tells you what kind of hotel this is before you've seen the mahogany or the views over Rittenhouse Square. It holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star, and it earns both through sheer scale and quiet confidence rather than flash. The square outside stays green and walkable, and the neighborhood around it is about as good a base as Philadelphia offers.

  5. Rank 5. Middle Child Clubhouse

    Whimsical American

Princess Diana in Eagles gear hangs on the wall, a neon sign says "Never Grow Up," and somehow the kitchen is turning out steak au poivre and egg sandwiches that New York Times critics put on their Philadelphia shortlist. This all-day café runs from thick malted pancakes in the morning through hoagies built with fine-dining precision at lunch, into a full dinner menu at night. Whimsy is the decor; the cooking means it.

  8. The green salad here became a Philadelphia talking point, which tells you everything about what kind of tavern this is. Meetinghouse is an American bar and kitchen in Fishtown where the menu looks almost suspiciously plain, right up until the food arrives. The hot roast beef sandwich and pork-and-beans both suggest a kitchen treating simple things as the whole point, not the backup plan. Named to The New York Times Restaurant List for 2025.

  9. Each of the twelve rooms in this Midtown Village boutique hotel is named for a woman who passed through when the building housed the New Century Guild, an early feminist organization. The rooms themselves are eclectic and photogenic without feeling like a theme park, and the service is full hotel, not glorified B&B. No restaurant on-site, but the concierge earns their keep pointing you toward the neighborhood. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

    The awards

  10. A Fishtown red brick that did time as a women's home and a retirement community before its current life as a boutique hotel. The 50 rooms mix warm minimalism with antique touches that don't feel forced, and an interior courtyard with a heated pool is a quiet surprise for the neighborhood. A Mediterranean restaurant called Bastia is on site. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  11. Rank 16. Fiorella

    Italian

The dirty pasta water martini has its own Esquire listing, which tells you something about how Fiorella operates. This South Philly pasta spot, a Michelin Bib Gourmand, runs a short, handmade menu out of what used to be a three-generation butcher shop. Marc Vetri's name is on it, the room is small, and the cacio e pepe is the kind that makes you stop talking mid-sentence.

  13. The Aloft chain has a reputation for identical rooms in identical buildings near identical highways, which makes this one genuinely surprising. It occupies a 1920s Classical Revival landmark on North Broad Street, and the bones of the old Liberty Title Building give it the kind of character most Aloft properties have to fake with accent walls. A midrange Marriott hotel that actually has somewhere to be.

    The awards

  14. A Hilton luxury-boutique hotel tucked a block off East Market in an old-school office building whose bones have been kept and dressed up by AvroKO in a palette that reads firmly present-tense. The result is a place that feels considered rather than corporate, and its East Market address puts guests within easy reach of some of the city's better dining and nightlife without making them work for it.

  15. A boutique hotel sitting essentially next door to Independence Hall, the Monaco is Kimpton doing something a little looser and more playful than usual: brighter colors, a whimsical streak, less corporate gravitas than you'd expect from a building in the heart of Philadelphia's business district. Center City has no shortage of stiff, conservative hotels, and this one cheerfully ignores that tradition. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

    The awards

  16. A 1929 Art Deco building that once housed the American Institute of Architects is a pretty good starting point for a hotel with art on its mind. The Kimpton Palomar leans into that history without turning the place into a lecture, hanging work by Philadelphia artists throughout rooms that feel warm rather than curated. The lobby fireplace alone makes arriving in winter feel like a reasonable life choice. A block from Rittenhouse Square.

  17. The awards

  18. The Packard Building has been around forever, and Morris Adjmi Architects, the firm behind the Wythe in Williamsburg, converted two of its floors into an apartment hotel steps from City Hall. Rooms feel like a borrowed pied-à-terre rather than a standard hotel stay, with residential-grade kitchens and enough design detail to make you forget you're paying by the night. The Michelin Guide has it on their selected hotels list.

    The awards

  19. High ceilings, detailed molding, and hardwood floors survived a careful restoration at this grand old Center City hotel, where 184 rooms split between two moods: deep charcoal walls with four-poster beds for the dramatic, white paneling for the sensible. Brass sconces and velvet bolster pillows in olive or rust appear throughout. City Hall sits right outside on Broad Street, and the six-story Conservatory lounge gives everyone somewhere to land after a long day of feeling historic.

  21. A skyscraper hotel steps from City Hall, the W Philadelphia plays against type: the usual brand theatrics are dialed back in favor of something more sober and grown-up, without losing the style. Public spaces run to a swanky lounge, a rooftop bar, and a modern Italian restaurant evoking Sixties Rome. For a W, surprisingly easy to take seriously.

    The awards

  22. Thirteen rooms tucked into a pair of former South Street rowhouses, Yowie is a boutique hotel from a designer who spent years at Ralph Lauren before coming home to Philadelphia. The brick exterior is classic Queen Village, but inside it runs minimalist and colorful, full of the same eye that built her homewares shop downstairs. There's no front desk, just a self-check-in that feels less like hospitality protocol and more like borrowing a very stylish friend's apartment.

    The awards

  23. Lokal Fishtown lands somewhere between boutique hotel and vacation rental, which is exactly the pitch. The loft-style apartments run modernist but unpretentious, with hotel bathrooms, apartment kitchens, a cocktail kit stocked and ready, and a curated list of delivery apps for when you can't decide. One unit has garden access, another a deep soaking tub. Fishtown being Fishtown, the bars and restaurants just outside make staying in feel almost wasteful.

    The awards

  24. Rooms named Ben and Betsy, after the neighbors who made this street famous, set the tone at this low-touch, apartment-style hotel in Old City. No front desk fuss, just an iPad stocked with neighborhood intel and urban-loft interiors with contemporary furniture. It's the kind of place that assumes you'd rather feel like a resident than a guest, which, on one of Philadelphia's most historically loaded blocks, is not a bad assumption.

  26. The four rooms above Wm. Mulherin's Sons sit inside a former whiskey-bottling plant in Fishtown, which tells you something about the neighborhood's trajectory. This is a boutique hotel in the loosest sense, a handful of rooms rather than a property, and the draw is as much the wood-fired Italian restaurant downstairs as anything happening on your floor. Pack light and eat well.

  29. An old tavern in Bucks County farm country, about an hour from Philadelphia, that has been turned into a boutique hotel without being stripped of its bones. The building has been around forever, and the team has leaned into that with a modern-retro style that's theatrical without tipping into theme park. Good for a weekend when the city stops making sense and you need a road that narrows before it gets quiet.

  30. Rank 33. My Loup

    French

The bookshelves and well-worn wood make My Loup feel less like a supper club and more like someone's very good dinner party. The French-leaning menu reads casual but cooks with real intent, seasonal and confidently seasoned, the kind of food where the chef is clearly enjoying themselves. The bar is no afterthought either, named among Punch's best new bartenders. The New York Times and Bon Appétit both took notice, and it's easy to see why.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
