The Best Places in Batignolles & l'Europe

  1. Pleincœur is a pâtisserie that displays its cakes under glass cloches on a marble tower, like a jeweler with a sugar problem. The ordering is refreshingly normal, though: join the brisk queue, point, pay. Tables overlook the square at no markup, and the Paris-Brest comes with a hazelnut cream pile that makes restraint feel like a character flaw. The pastry chef has won The World's Best Pastry Chef Award.

  3. The restaurant takes its name from a Réunion orchid known for its almond scent, which tells you something about how this kitchen thinks. It holds a Michelin star, and the cooking at this sleek Batignolles dining room pulls from French technique, Indian spice, and the islands, moving between them with enough confidence that the combination feels inevitable rather than contrived. The chef and her pastry chef partner run the room together, and the desserts are not an afterthought.

  4. Rank 2. Maison Dubois

    Modern French

Six tables, no walk-ins, and a chef who spent years as sous-chef to Pierre Gagnaire before opening this quietly serious fine dining room in the 8th. The cooking riffs on French classics with a fondness for variations on a theme, a habit inherited from that rue Balzac education. One Michelin star. The kind of place where the menu feels written for the table, not the other way around.

  5. A small Korean counter restaurant in the 8th built almost entirely around dumplings and tartares, where you sit close enough to the central prep counter to watch the chef fold, slice, and season his way through a short, focused menu. The mandu are the anchor, but Korean herbs do quiet work across the dishes, lending a fragrance that feels personal rather than decorative. Michelin Bib Gourmand, and you'll want a reservation.

  10. Rank 10. Bolea

    French

A bistro in the 17th where the chef also runs a.lea across town, which tells you something about her range. The room has that unhurried neighborhood feel, and the cooking leans traditional French without getting stuck there: a langoustine bisque arrives with citrus and a sharp aioli, and the chocolate mousse gets a finish of fleur de sel and olive oil. Precise, unfussy, and very much a place you'd want a table at twice.

  12. Rank 10. Coretta

    Mexican-influenced Bistro

The treetop views over Martin Luther King park set the mood before the food arrives. Coretta is a casual modern restaurant in the Clichy-Batignolles district, named for Coretta Scott King, where the kitchen lands somewhere between Parisian bistronomy and Mexican flair, with edible flowers and sprouts adding color to plates built from local ingredients. The oak-lined room feels relaxed enough that nobody's performing, which in Paris is its own achievement.

  13. Rank 10. Lazare

    French

    The awards

  14. The chef trained at Lucas Carton and La Grande Cascade before opening this modern bistro near Saint-Lazare, and the cooking carries that pedigree into something looser and more personal. The menu moves between French technique and Mexican sensibility without announcing either, which is the kind of restraint that takes skill. The room is friendly and unfussy, which suits the food's confidence perfectly.

  16. Rank 10. Super Huit

    Modern Bistro

A corner café in the 8th that got a thoughtful second act, turned into a bistro with a slightly scuffed 1970s-inflected room and an open kitchen. The team behind Mieux in the 9th are responsible, which explains the seasonal bistronomy cooking and the tight list of organic and natural wines. It draws the kind of crowd that fills the 11th on a Tuesday, just relocated west of where you'd expect to find them.

  17. Rank 10. Vinello

    Modern Italian

Exposed stone, smoked-glass mirrors, and an open kitchen give this Batignolles Italian bistro a slightly rough-around-the-edges feel that suits it well. The Sicilian chef trained abroad, and the cooking shows it: contemporary technique applied to Italian ideas, nothing fussy. Lunch brings a set menu that won't hurt, evenings go à la carte, and the wine list leans Italian throughout. A neighborhood room that actually feels like one.

  18. Rank 18. Prima

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza spot on a lively stretch of the 17th, where the rooster-shaped water jugs set the tone before the food arrives. The dough follows classic rules, but the toppings go their own way, and a calzone stuffed boldly enough to earn a proper nickname sits alongside a Margherita that still gets a personal touch. The ceramic dishes are colorful, the staff are warm, and the lunch prix-fixe comes in under twenty euros.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
