The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Östermalm

  1. Rank 1. Ekstedt

    Nordic

Every dish at this Stockholm fine dining room comes from an open fire, because Niklas Ekstedt cooks without electricity. Visits begin with a kitchen tour and an oyster snack prepared in a flame-licked cone, which sets the tone neatly. Juniper smoke, reindeer, and various Scandinavian ingredients that probably had a better morning than you follow. The room holds a Michelin star, and the service team is warm enough to balance the theatrical primitivism.

  2. Rank 1. Nour

    Modern Japanese

On the third floor of a city-centre townhouse, this Michelin-starred tasting restaurant is quiet enough that you notice the silence. The format runs aperitifs and snacks in the lounge first, then a procession of modern dishes that pair Swedish produce with Japanese technique. Vendace unagi and smoked reindeer tartare set the tone early, and the kitchen stays in that register throughout. Not a loud room, not a loud menu.

  3. Rank 3. ergo.

    Modern French

Net curtains on Artillerigatan 14 give almost nothing away from the street, which feels like a deliberate choice. Inside, this fine dining room is quiet and elegant, the kind of place where the open kitchen hums along without theatrics. The cooking sits on a classic French base but pulls in modern technique and unexpected flavors, with acidity doing a lot of quiet work to keep things lively. It holds a Michelin star.

  4. You walk through what appears to be a flower shop, find the basement door, and descend into a purple-lit cocktail bar that takes its botanical theme more seriously than most. The menu runs to nine drinks, each one built around naturalistic technique without making a fuss about it. A Difford's Guide five-star rating and a White Guide Exceptional Level nod confirm the crowd already knows the way down.

  5. The name comes from "petrichor," that specific smell of rain hitting warm earth, and the restaurant carries a similar quality, quiet and close without trying too hard. It's a set-menu spot on Kommendörsgatan that follows the seasons tightly, folding in small-batch ingredients as optional add-ons when they're around. House-made non-alcoholic pairings sit alongside the wine list for those keeping a clear head.

  6. The name spells it out, literally: G for generosity, E for emotional, right down to A for artisanal. This small, intimate cocktail bar on Grev Turegatan was built almost entirely by hand by the bartender who runs it most nights, which tells you something about the level of care behind the stick. Food stops at snacks. The drinks are the point, and the room is sized exactly right for that to matter.

  7. Moody lighting and a pumping soundtrack set the tone at this intimate gastro bar on Engelbrektsgatan, where the cocktail bar gets as much attention as the kitchen. The creative menu skips around South America, Asia, and Europe without apology, leaning on modern technique and bold spicing, with Oscietra caviar and Périgord truffles appearing when the mood calls for a little drama. A fun night out that also happens to be serious cooking.

  8. Rank 7. Brasserie Astoria

    Modern French

  9. Conceptual artist Carsten Höller co-founded this Stockholm restaurant around a "Brutalist Kitchen Manifesto," which holds that a dish should have one primary ingredient and nothing to distract from it. No sauce to hide behind, no spice to soften the blow. The cooking is technically serious, the sourcing is seasonal and obsessive, and the whole thing is either a provocation or dinner, depending on your appetite for both.

  10. The kitchen keeps its own backyard garden and sources from a dedicated vegetable plot outside the city, which tells you a lot about how seriously this restaurant takes the plate. It started as a supper club run out of the owners' home, and that warmth carried over. Reindeer, pike perch, and lamb hearts anchor the menu, but the desserts, from a trained pâtissière, are quietly the thing people talk about on the way home.

  11. The name means "the craft," and the kitchen takes that literally, turning classic Swedish comfort food into the kind of meal you think about on the flight home. Chef Stefan Ekengren is also a cookbook author, which explains why the hasselback potatoes and änglamat feel like they were written before they were cooked. The bar's eight-seat communal table gets the full menu alongside tailored cocktails, so there's no wrong seat in the house.

  27. A server singing a drinking song while you eat your chawanmushi sets the tone at this 25-seat modern restaurant in Östermalm, named after the Bergman film. French technique meets Swedish pantry in a format where you can build your own menu or let the kitchen decide, with a sommelier co-running the room. It's intimate enough that you'll notice everyone else's order, which you will want to.

  28. Red leather banquettes, panelled walls, and a wood-fired grill open to the room set the tone at this upscale Stockholm steakhouse. Nordic beef gets top billing alongside Japanese Wagyu and American imports, most of it dry-aged and kissed by flame with the sort of restraint you'd expect from a culture that considers minimalism a moral position. It landed at number 69 on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which is a fine thing to be.

  29. Rank 37. Ciccio's

    Italian Cocktail Bar

The bar runs the length of the room, and the dining room noise behind it is part of the deal. Tucked inside an Italian restaurant on Östermalm and nodding to New York's Little Italy, this aperitivo bar lines the walls with old black-and-white photographs and fills the stools with people who came in for one drink and stayed for three. The bartenders dress the part and pour accordingly.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
