The 11 Best Vegan in San Francisco

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best vegan in San Francisco, according to the experts: Michelin Guide, San Francisco Chronicle, and The Infatuation have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Shizen comes out on top.

More Less

Cheese Board Pizza and Greens hold the next two places. San Francisco Chronicle shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide next.

  1. Rank 1. Shizen

    Vegan Sushi

A vegan sushi bar and izakaya in the Mission where the kitchen treats a vegetable as a puzzle to solve rather than a garnish to apologize for. The team ferments, pickles, and sears produce into nigiri, rolls, and ramen that hold their own on the merits, not on goodwill. The room is sleek and lively, drawing skeptics alongside the converted. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  2. Rank 2. Cheese Board Pizza

    Vegetarian Pizzeria

A worker-owned collective in the Gourmet Ghetto, Cheese Board bakes one vegetarian sourdough pizza per day, rotating with the seasons, and you either want it or you don't. You probably want it. The line wraps around the block most days, but it moves fast, and the green sauce, herby and quietly ferocious, is non-negotiable. Grab a slice, claim a parklet table, and settle into the reliably frenetic sidewalk energy Berkeley does so well.

  3. The floor-to-ceiling windows face the Bay, and if you time it right you'll be watching the sunset over the Golden Gate while eating wild mushroom gumbo. This old-school vegetarian restaurant at Fort Mason has been around forever, loosely affiliated with the San Francisco Zen Center, which explains why the dining room feels so unusually calm. The menu takes a global approach, and a vegetarian can order anything on it without scanning for fine print.

  4. Rank 2. The Cultured Pickle Shop

    Vegetarian American

Rows of cloudy jars exhaling tiny bubbles line the production kitchen at this small-batch pickle shop and weekend rice-bowl counter in Berkeley. Saturday and Sunday bring a three-course menu built around a maximalist rice bowl piled with the shop's latest ferments: kimchis, citrusy pickles, miso-braised greens. Drinks run to yuzu kombucha or warm ginger amazake. It may be the most Berkeley restaurant of all time, which is saying something.

  5. Rank 5. Cha-Ya

    Vegan Japanese

Vegan Japanese in the Mission, where the menu reads like an argument that tofu never needed meat to earn its place. Cha-Ya has been around forever, with roots in Berkeley's produce-obsessed dining scene, and the cooking stays rustic and unfussy: brothy soups, deep-fried tofu in mushroom-seaweed dashi, sushi rolls packed with pickled and steamed vegetables. Sidewalk tables if you want to watch Valencia Street do its thing.

  6. A food truck that does one thing: pav bhaji, the Mumbai street staple of spiced, buttered vegetable gravy served with soft, toasted rolls for scooping. The bhaji gets its richness from Amul butter, and the locally made pav handles like Parker House rolls. Spicy, cheesy, or both are your main decisions. Order extra bread regardless, because the gravy always wins the race. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's top South Asian and top vegetarian spots.

  7. Rank 7. Golden Era

    Vegan Vietnamese Noodle Shop

The pho broth here is light and fragrant with onion and ginger, and the soy-protein brisket has enough chew to make you question your assumptions. This all-vegan Asian restaurant, connected to the Loving Hut network, runs through a long menu of pad Thai, wonton soup, and claypot rice without any of it feeling like a consolation prize. It's a Civic Center lunch spot with real intentions and very reasonable prices.

  8. The fried oyster mushrooms arrive tempura-crisp and somehow juicy underneath, which is the kind of thing that makes you stop mid-sentence. Millennium is a full-service vegan restaurant in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood, been around forever, and still the kind of place where the menu takes real technique seriously rather than just swapping out the meat. A la carte most nights, prix fixe on weekends.

  9. Tomato nigiri, marinated and roasted until it snaps like fish, is probably the argument you'd make to a skeptic. Tane is a vegan izakaya and sushi spot in Berkeley, a sibling to San Francisco's Shizen, where the rice is taken seriously and the plant-based fills lean toward smoked beets and pickled fruit rather than an avocado-forward shrug. The crowd skews Berkeley in all the ways you'd expect, but the food is doing something more interesting than the neighborhood cliché suggests.

  10. The wheat-fiber "asada" is marinated in beer and smoke until it tastes like a backyard grill, which is a reasonable way to open an argument. This snug Oakland taqueria makes the case that vegan tacos don't need an asterisk, with in-house fillings, mushroom carnitas with real richness, and horchata that holds its own. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area, vegan or otherwise implied.

  11. The servers here will gladly walk you through the nuances of vegan cheeses without a trace of condescension, which sets the tone for this plant-based restaurant in Cow Hollow. The menu reads like a convincing case for skipping meat, and the burgers, built on mushrooms and spinach with chipotle aioli and tomato chutney, give skeptics a comfortable entry point. A good first date for the vegan-curious.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
