The best bistros in Brussels, according to the experts: Le Fooding and Michelin Guide have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Charlu comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Ixelles and Brussels.

More Less

Correspondance and René hold the next two places. Le Fooding shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide close behind.

  1. A grand old villa in the Saint-Job neighborhood houses this French bistro where the menu runs firmly southwest, cassoulet and pig's trotters and all. Wainscoting, mirrors, and tables packed close enough to overhear your neighbor's wine opinions set the room. The owner's wine opinions are also available, offered freely and at length. Classic bistronomy, cooked with evident conviction.

  2. San Degeimbre's contemporary brasserie sits inside Brussels' converted rail freight terminus, a post-industrial complex that still feels faintly surprised to be hosting dinner. The menu roams Belgium, Peru, and Asia without asking permission, so waterzooi turns up with a jolt of yuzu and duck magret finds itself alongside soy and garlic in an orange sauce. The mezzanine counter overlooking the open kitchen is the seat to ask for.

  7. You walk past the father's newsagents to reach the son's bistro, which tells you something about the family dynamic. De Maurice à Olivier is a Parisian-style neighborhood restaurant where classic French cooking is taken seriously: rooted, precise, and not especially interested in being fashionable. A well-stocked wine cellar and a serious selection of cigars and whiskeys round things out. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  8. Rank 8. Le Saint Boniface

    European Bistro

Red-and-white checked tablecloths, vintage photos, biscuit tins on shelves, and jazz drifting through a room where the tables are close enough to follow your neighbor's argument. This Ixelles bistro runs on country cooking from Lyon, the Basque Country, and Southwest France, the kind of food built around things like foie gras terrine and calf's head with gribiche. Hearty, unfussy, and priced like it means it.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
