The Best Places in the United States

Drink + Stay + Do, change section
  1. A bamboo crosshatch ceiling, dismantled in Japan and reassembled beam by beam in a Tribeca basement, sets the tone at Shibui. This spa inside the Greenwich Hotel is modeled on the Japanese onsen tradition: a heated indoor pool, hushed treatment rooms, and towels soaked in warm sake. The whole thing whispers while other spas shout. Vogue named it among the 100 best spas in the world, which tracks when you're wrapped in sake-damp linen under ancient timber.

  2. The spa inside the Parker Palm Springs calls itself the Palm Springs Yacht Club, which is exactly as absurd as it sounds for a property landlocked in the desert. Jonathan Adler designed it, so expect nautical whimsy alongside the saltwater pool, eucalyptus steam rooms, and saunas. Treatments are personalized and nearly all end with a scalp massage. Vogue named it one of the 100 best spas in the world.

  3. A wellness retreat in the Hudson Highlands built around the idea that you should earn your massage, The Ranch Hudson Valley runs three- and four-day programs of hard hiking, stripped-down eating, and daily bodywork, colon hydrotherapy included if you're feeling ambitious. Guests arrive having already done 30 days of homework. Named to Vogue's 100 Best Spas in the World, it draws the kind of New Yorkers who treat relaxation like a project with deliverables.

  4. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Catskills and Shawangunks from inside a hammam-style bathhouse that somehow manages to feel warm despite being genuinely stark. This spa at the Inness resort runs about 7,000 square feet, with a saltwater pool for warmer months and the kind of severe, expensive minimalism that ends up being more inviting than intimidating. Vogue put it on their 100 Best Spas in the World list, which tracks.

  5. The art on the walls here runs to Alex Katz, Chuck Close, and Hockney, which sets an odd, pleasant tone for a spa. The building itself is almost cathedral-proportioned, with soaring ceilings and windows that look out over Cayuga Lake and the lavender fields surrounding it. Treatments lean Ayurvedic, and the hot and cold soaking pools, saunas, and steam rooms fill out the rest of the afternoon. Vogue named it among the 100 best spas in the world.

  6. Sheep actually graze the grounds here, which sets the tone before you've unpacked. The Wellhouse is the multi-floor spa at Blackberry Farm, a sprawling Tennessee mountain property where guests tend to arrive and simply not leave. Hiking, fly-fishing, kayaking, yoga on a tree-line deck, and farm animals to pet fill the hours around treatments. Vogue named it among the 100 best spas in the world, which tracks when the backdrop is 4,200 Smoky Mountain acres.

  7. Rank 207. Carry On

    Cocktail Bar

The cabin is dressed in burnt orange and warm walnut, the windows show a looping blue-yonder reel, and a flight attendant is rolling the beverage cart your way. Carry On is an immersive cocktail lounge built around the first-class, Mad Men-era flight fantasy, preflight announcements and all. Reservations drop weekly and go fast, so plan accordingly. The Spirited Awards named it a Top 10 U.S. Nominee for Best New Cocktail Bar.

  8. Rank 208. Maison Premiere

    Cocktail Bar

A four-tap absinthe drip at the center of the bar is a replica of the one at the Absinthe House in New Orleans, and that tells you most of what you need to know. Maison Premiere is a cocktail and oyster bar in Williamsburg that commits fully to the bit: dim golden light, mock antique everything, marble bar top, the faint sense that you've wandered into another city and century. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, which tracks.

  9. A cocktail bar on Portland's tourist-heavy Wharf Street that opened with a stated mission to make the block worth visiting. The drinks lean on reworked classics, with hot dogs and bar snacks to keep things honest. The $28 Flaming Scorpion Bowl arrives in a blaze of mild chaos, which tells you the room doesn't take itself too seriously. Punch named it one of the best new bars in the country, and Esquire flagged its espresso martini among the best in America.

  10. The lobby is a long, dim, Art Deco-inspired corridor that makes you walk past a very glamorous staircase before you find the front desk, which is a choice. This Midtown hotel is Sofitel's North American flagship, 29 floors a short walk from Bryant Park, and the whole thing leans into a Franco-New York elegance that stops just short of being a bit much. Rooms are quiet and well-dressed, and the staff keeps things moving.

  11. A glass tower above the Cumberland River in SoBro, this Four Seasons sits steps from the Country Music Hall of Fame, which makes for an interesting lobby crowd, rhinestone boots alongside tailored suits. Rooms run floor-to-ceiling windows and warm wood finishes with just enough musical nod to feel intentional. The rooftop pool, spa, and an in-house restaurant keep you on property longer than planned. It holds a Michelin two-key designation and a Forbes Four Star.

  12. Pink open-air cars shuttle guests around the 16 acres here, which tells you something about the register: this is a Forbes Five Star, Michelin two-key oceanfront resort that takes relaxation seriously and has the budget to prove it. Art Deco touches, a Sense spa, two pools, and private bungalows set among English-garden landscaping, all facing a south-coast beach the property calls the American Riviera. A Goop shop is on site, naturally.

  13. Rank 213. Bar Madonna

    Italian Cocktail Bar

  14. Leather window seats overlooking Lake Michigan come standard in many rooms here, which sets the tone for this luxury hotel perched above the Magnificent Mile. Rottet Studio gave the lobby and upper suites a refresh that reads crisp without trying too hard. The spa and indoor pool are genuinely calm, the staff is the kind that anticipates rather than reacts, and Bloomingdale's is literally one floor below, if that helps you decide.

  15. A 15,000-crystal chandelier greets you in the lobby, which sets the tone for this Forbes Four Star hotel tucked into a landmark tower where Canal Street meets the Mississippi. Rooms run white shiplap and river views; the rooftop pool gives you somewhere to be horizontal after a night of doing otherwise. Alon Shaya and Donald Link run the restaurants, and the spa is quietly serious about its job, which is no small thing this close to Bourbon Street.

  16. Fifty-one lofts on the top two floors of MGM Grand, each with floor-to-ceiling glass and an infinity tub pointed at the Strip. This Forbes Five Star boutique hotel within a hotel gives every guest a dedicated 24-hour butler, a private entrance, and a tidy distance from the casino floor below. Designer Tony Chi kept the rooms calm and contemporary, which is a deliberate counterpoint to everything happening outside the window.

    The awards

  17. The 92-story glass tower sits right on the Chicago River, which means the floor-to-ceiling views from the rooms are doing serious work. This Forbes Five Star hotel leans into dark clubby wood, neutral tones, and custom furniture, so the feeling is more hushed residential than flashy. The fully-stocked in-room kitchens are a nice touch, and the hotel's chefs will come cook in them if you'd rather not go anywhere.

  18. Rank 218. NightBloom

    Cocktail Bar

NightBloom is a late-night cocktail bar on St. Claude, run by the Bacchanal team, and the lighting is a coral glow flattering enough that you may forget you came to drink. The menu runs from an olive salad martini to a smoky pineapple margarita, and the bartenders will talk playlists with you. Some nights there are dance parties or custom nail art, and a dog may adopt your table. Eater named it Best New Bar.

  19. Rank 219. Platform 18

    Cocktail Bar

The digital windows scroll through passing landscapes while you sit inside a wood-paneled Presidential Pullman car that never moves, which is either the concept or the joke, possibly both. Platform 18 is a reservation-only immersive cocktail bar built around Prohibition-era drinks and Roaring Twenties New York. The Pinnacle Guide awarded it 2 Pins. Book ahead; walk-ins go nowhere fast.

  20. Rank 220. Bryant’s

    Cocktail Bar

There's no menu at Bryant's, just a bartender who asks what you're in the mood for and then makes something better than you imagined. This Milwaukee cocktail lounge has been around forever, all dark wood, velvet booths, and Rat Pack lighting that flatters everyone equally. A 2025 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Bar, though the room feels too cool to acknowledge it. Come dressed like you mean it.

  21. Every room has a lanai big enough to actually live on, and guests frequently do. Halekulani is a classic Waikiki beachfront hotel that runs on the kind of unhurried, attentive service that feels almost anachronistic now. The spa draws from Hawaiian, Asian, and South Pacific traditions, and surfing lessons are steps from the lobby. Forbes Four Star and a Michelin two-key property, it wears its reputation quietly, which is part of the point.

  22. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the guest rooms frame Inner Harbor views that do most of the decorating for you. This Forbes Four Star hotel is a waterfront glass tower with a lobby art collection serious enough to slow you down before check-in. The fourth floor holds a 10,000-square-foot spa and the city's only waterfront infinity pool, which is the kind of amenity that makes it hard to remember there's a city outside.

  24. Fifty-five rooms on the C&O Canal in Georgetown, where the smallest luxury hotel in D.C. somehow includes townhouses with private courtyards. The library's double-height ceilings and velvet armchairs do their best impression of a private club, and the rooftop lounge adds skyline views for good measure. Wolfgang Puck handles the food. It holds a Michelin two-key distinction and a Forbes Four Star rating.

  25. The 1927 building on the corner of Newbury Street spent its early years as one of the country's first Ritz-Carlton outposts, and the bones still show: wainscoting, herringbone floors, the whole patrician package. This Forbes Four Star, Michelin two-key hotel layers local art and Byredo bath products over the classical shell without fussing too much about the contrast. The rooftop restaurant, Contessa, draws its own crowd well beyond the guest list.

    The awards

  26. A Beaux-Arts building from 1911 meeting W Hotels' anything-but-1911 sensibility is exactly as entertaining as it sounds. The Rockwell Group handled this hotel's original 2001 debut and came back to renovate it, which either shows loyalty or a need to finish what they started. The Living Room lobby has soaring ceilings and marble columns that read a little Grand Central, and a rooftop bar sits up on the 22nd floor for anyone who needs a view with their cocktail.

  27. Rank 227. Nickel City

    Cocktail Bar

Nickel City is an East Austin neighborhood bar that has been pouring drinks on this corner since the 1930s and sees no reason to get fancy about it. The focus is cold beer, boilermakers, and draft Pimm's, with the occasional Aperol Spritz for anyone feeling continental. A food truck out back sells Detroit-style Coney dogs and wings, which is how a quick drink turns into a full afternoon.

  28. Rank 228. Kimball House

    Seasonal Seafood

Housed in a renovated rail depot, Kimball House is a seafood restaurant and serious cocktail bar with tufted leather booths, a carved mahogany bar, and a raw bar menu running past twenty oyster varieties, complete with tasting notes so you don't have to guess. Esquire named the Kimball House martini among America's finest, which should tell you something. The kitchen runs seasonal, and dessert regularly steals the table's attention. A Michelin Selected restaurant.

  29. The big neon sign out front survived the gap years when nothing else did, and it still draws you in off Atlantic Avenue. This Art Deco bar in Cobble Hill has been around forever, and Toby Cecchini, the bartender who invented the Cosmopolitan, brought it back to life with the booths and floral wallpaper more or less intact. The kitchen does a Reuben and a double-patty burger, but the cocktails are what fill the room on a Tuesday.

  31. Rooms here run from around 450 to 1,700 square feet, which tells you what kind of hotel this is before you've seen the mahogany or the views over Rittenhouse Square. It holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star, and it earns both through sheer scale and quiet confidence rather than flash. The square outside stays green and walkable, and the neighborhood around it is about as good a base as Philadelphia offers.

    The awards

  32. The marble lobby and English motor court set the tone for this full-service Gold Coast luxury hotel before you've even checked in. Art Deco bones, fireplaces in the guest rooms, white marble baths, and only ten rooms per floor mean it never feels like a convention block. Staff famously decline tips, which either says something about the service culture or about Chicago. A Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key.

    The awards

  33. Elliott Bay views stop conversations mid-sentence here, and the Bay Rooms are built around that fact, with floor-to-ceiling windows and marble soaking tubs positioned accordingly. This downtown Four Seasons sits steps from the Seattle Art Museum, with a 40-foot rooftop infinity pool and a coffee concierge who shows up at your door between six and ten. A Forbes Four Star hotel that takes the Pacific Northwest aesthetic seriously, pale woods and all.

  34. The wine list has a dedicated section for aged Madeira, which tells you something about the seriousness of the operation. This moody Poncey-Highland wine bar holds a Michelin selection and landed on Bon Appétit's best new bars list, but the kitchen pulls its own weight with snacks, shareable plates, and evening mains that feel seasonal without being precious. A James Beard semifinalist for Best New Bar, it draws the kind of crowd that actually reads the back label.

  35. A former auto garage with a butcher-paper cocktail menu still hanging above the makeshift kitchen, Liquid Diet is a creative cocktail bar where the bartenders juice and blend everyday ingredients into drinks that read like a dare. Bell pepper martinis, key lime sippers, banana bread cocktails with cookie shards frozen into chiseled ice cubes. Esquire named it one of the best bars in America, and curious tourists and pub crawlers seem to be putting that to the test nightly.

  36. The hotel occupies the upper floors of Mandalay Bay without sharing its casino floor, which is the whole point. Rooms run to desert-toned calm and Strip views; the private pool stays mercifully quiet by Vegas standards. Veranda handles California-brasserie duties, PRESS pours the cocktails, and the spa holds a Forbes Five Star. A Michelin Key and Forbes Four Star for the hotel itself.

  37. Rank 237. Julep

    Cocktail Bar

The eponymous julep anchors the menu, but this Washington Ave cocktail bar stretches well past that single calling card into a sprawling collection of bourbon and a drink list built around herbs and Southern ingredients most bars don't bother sourcing. The vibe is old-school Southern hospitality without the kitsch, and the James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar Program in 2022 suggests the approach landed.

  38. A neoclassical tower in the middle of Midtown, half a mile from the Renzo Piano-designed High Museum and a short walk from Piedmont Park. Rooms run to leather headboards, velvet sitting chairs, and original work by Atlanta painter Caroline Bullock. Bar Margot, named after the Wes Anderson character, pulls in DJ nights on weekends. The spa's weekday happy hour treatment menu suggests someone had fun with the concept.

  39. The whole room is built to look like the cargo hold of a 19th-century ship, portholes and all, which sets the stakes early at this immersive tiki bar on Indian School. The cocktail menu runs from classics to the team's own riffs on the genre, leaning into the full theatrical bit without apologizing for it. Phoenix New Times named it the city's top tiki bar, and the Spirited Awards put the bar team among the top four in the U.S.

  40. Rank 240. Employees Only

    Cocktail Bar

A fortune-teller in the window is not a gimmick so much as a promise about the evening ahead. Past the red velvet curtains, this art deco cocktail bar on Hudson Street runs to carved wood, marble floors, a tin ceiling, and an onyx fireplace, all of it suggesting you should order something serious and stay a while. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, which the regulars probably already knew.

  41. The 1906 Beaux-Arts ferry terminal at the foot of Manhattan is an unlikely setting for a boutique hotel, but Casa Cipriani leans into that tension hard. Rooms face either the ornate landmarked shell or the harbor, and the river-side views have no competition in the city. The Cipriani name means a certain brand of hushed Italian luxury, all pale linen and restrained glamour. The Jazz Café models itself on a prewar supper club, with live music most nights. Michelin awarded it 3 Keys.

  42. The salmon-pink Champagne lounge and the sky-blue rooftop bar tell you everything about this hotel's register before you even check in. Sitting right on Marion Square in the heart of Charleston, Hotel Bennett is a new build that wears its Southern elegance without apology, from the mural-lined rotunda to rooms so soft they feel like sleeping inside a cloud. A Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key round out the credentials.

    The awards

  43. The view from the upper floors puts the White House close enough to make you feel briefly important. This Italian Renaissance hotel on Lafayette Square has been the discreet address of choice for presidents, diplomats, and people who prefer their name not in the papers, and it carries that old-world air without letting the plumbing get old-world too. Holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star.

    The awards

  44. Rank 244. The Dead Rabbit

    Irish Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar in the Financial District built around the legend of John Morrissey, a bare-knuckle Irish immigrant who ran one of the city's rougher gangs in the 1800s. The menu reads like a graphic novel, each volume dropping the Rabbit into a new era of New York's murkier chapters. The drinks are theatrical without being silly, and the Irish pub downstairs keeps things grounded for anyone who just wants a pint.

  45. Rank 244. Tiger Bar

    Cocktail Bar

Tiger Bar is a gin-leaning cocktail bar on Gallatin Pike dressed as a 1930s carnival sideshow, and it commits without tipping into costume party. There's a mystery cocktail wheel you can spin to let fate pick your drink, which saves you from the menu and also from yourself. The Flamin' Hot Mozz Sticks have a Nashville Scene award, and Esquire put the place on its list of America's bars.

  46. White-brick walls and wrought-iron accents give this luxury hotel a European resort feel that sits a little incongruously at the foot of Camelback Mountain, which is sort of the whole point. The ownership group includes an NBA star and a country legend, and the crowd has taken note. Art Deco rooms come stocked with hand-selected books, five restaurants range from poolside to rooftop, and the spa is serious about it. A Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key.

  47. The 101-story tower was designed by Jeanne Gang, making it the tallest building by a female architect, which is the kind of fact that gets dropped at every rooftop cocktail hour. This St. Regis hotel sits along the Chicago River in quiet Lakeshore East, with Lake Michigan views and a wellness floor running spa, pool, and gym. Millennium Park is a short walk; a small private park sits right behind the building for when you'd rather not walk anywhere at all.

  48. Vaulted ceilings, pink Tennessee marble floors, and Botticino marble walls set the tone the moment you walk into this Lower East Side hotel, housed in a beautifully restored Edwardian bank building. The Neo-Renaissance bones are dramatic without trying too hard, which is fitting for a neighborhood that has always preferred cool to obvious. Tastemakers and the occasional celebrity fill the lobby. Michelin awarded it 2 Keys.

  49. The Palazzo tower is all suites, starting at 720 square feet, decorated in contemporary Italian style rather than the gondola-and-canal pageantry next door at The Venetian. Seven pools, Egyptian linens, remote-controlled shades against that relentless desert sun. Thomas Keller and Wolfgang Puck both have restaurants here, which gives the whole thing a certain critical mass. A Forbes Four Star resort that earns its quieter register amid the Strip's general enthusiasm for spectacle.

  50. Rank 250. Rob Roy

    Classic Cocktail Bar

The house martini splits its base between vodka and gin, throws in fino sherry and a river rock tincture, and arrives garnished with olives, a twist, and pearl onions, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Belltown cocktail lounge. Rob Roy calls itself a classic bar "with a bit of punk cheek," and the drinks make the case quietly. A James Beard nominee for Outstanding Bar, it has been a neighborhood anchor long enough to feel lived-in without feeling tired.

  52. Rank 252. Dante

    Italian Cocktail Bar

A full page of negronis is either a menu or a dare, and Dante in Greenwich Village has been inviting people to find out for longer than anyone cares to count. This Italian cocktail cafe and all-day aperitivo spot leans into its old-school bones without getting musty about it, pairing the drinks with burrata and charcuterie. Named a James Beard Outstanding Bar semifinalist and ranked on North America's 50 Best Bars list.

  53. Heated sidewalks run through the whole property, which tells you everything about the philosophy at this Forbes Five Star, Michelin Key lodge sitting mid-mountain at Deer Valley. Rooms come with jetted tubs; suites add stone fireplaces and gourmet kitchens. The ski valet handles your gear so you never have to think about it, and the Troll Hallen Lounge is exactly the kind of firelit room you want after a day on the slopes.

  55. Rank 255. Too Soon

    Cocktail Bar

Pink and purple neon sets the mood at this intimate cocktail bar, which leans hard into '80s New York nostalgia. Your drink arrives in whatever ceramic vessel the bartender feels like, a bunny, a donut with a handle, something stranger. The menu spans highballs, zero-proof options, and signatures like a blue cheese martini, but the real move is handing the bartender your preferences and letting them pull from a catalog of a thousand recipes.

  56. The butterfly motif is everywhere at this Forbes Four Star resort on the Strip, said to bring good luck, though the casino probably has its own opinions on that. Suites run to floor-to-ceiling Strip views, limestone and marble baths, and TVs that swivel to follow you around the room. The spa fills 37 treatment rooms, and XS, the nightclub on the property, has a wading pool and a chandelier over the dance floor, because of course it does.

  58. Frank Gehry designed the building, and the tenth-floor lobby faces his Walt Disney Concert Hall across the street, so the views start before you check in. This luxury hotel in Downtown L.A. holds a Forbes Four Star and runs like an urban resort: rooftop infinity pool, a spa, a public art collection, and two José Andrés restaurants on site. Rooms lean mid-century modern with marble bathrooms and enough tech to feel like a spaceship.

  59. The Patterson House is a cocktail bar that moved up to the top of a Gulch building and traded its old library-and-cigars gloom for a sweeping room hung with deep purple curtains. After dark they pull the drapes back to show the city lights, which suits a Manhattan fine. The food menu is big enough now that the pork chop might be your whole date night, not a warm-up for dinner.

  60. The rooftop pool is reserved strictly for guests, which is not a given in Los Angeles. L'Ermitage Beverly Hills is an independent boutique hotel with just over a hundred suites, and the whole operation is built around that number staying small. Staff learn names and preferences fast, the balconies overlook a quiet, tree-lined street, and the people checking in tend to prefer that nobody knows they're there. It holds a Michelin 2 Keys and a Forbes Four Star.

    The awards

  61. Monogrammed pillows and a rooftop pool with cabanas that double as massage suites or impromptu offices set the tone at this Forbes Four Star, Michelin two-key hotel in Beverly Hills. The Living Room just off the lobby draws the kind of crowd that technically doesn't need to be seen yet always is. The spa, The Belvedere brasserie, and a level of service that feels almost antiquated in the best sense round out the package.

    The awards

  62. A brick-and-glass facade on West 38th Street opens into a lobby that looks more like a gastropub than a hotel check-in, which is either disorienting or a relief depending on how your day went. The 180 rooms lean into garment-district history with subway-tiled bathrooms and chesterfield sofas, and the service carries a studied, almost theatrical attentiveness. A Michelin Selected Hotel a short walk from Bryant Park.

  63. Rooms done entirely in white, with two greenery-filled terraces, sit about as far as you can get from the neon circus outside without actually leaving Times Square. Ian Schrager, the man who gave the world Studio 54, brought his boutique instincts to one of the least boutique corners on earth, and the hotel is quieter and more serene than it has any right to be. A nightclub downstairs keeps the old faith.

  64. The name comes from an era when locals climbed to the roof to watch atomic test blasts light up the Nevada sky. This old-school bar on Fremont Street has been around forever, and the Rat Pack drank here after their shows, which sets the tone pretty neatly. The red-tinted interior leans into Atomic Age kitsch, sour beers are a specialty, and the patio out back is where late nights tend to end up.

  65. Kelly Wearstler designed every inch of this 32-story hotel in the Second Street District, and it shows, in the best way and the slightly self-conscious one. Where most Austin hotels lean into their scuffed boots, the Proper is unapologetically urban, with locally inflected decor that never lets you forget someone very stylish made every decision. A Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key back up the polish. Dining and cocktails keep it lively well past checkout hour.

  66. The rooms average 640 square feet, nearly double the Strip standard, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a pillow-top bed they've named the Wynn Dream Bed (sure, why not). This twin-tower resort holds a Forbes Four Star and leans hard into the idea that nature and excess belong together, so waterfalls and original fine art share space with Celine and Bottega boutiques. The spa, a show called Awakening, and the Lake of Dreams keep you busy without ever leaving the property.

  68. A neoclassical pile atop Nob Hill, the kind of building that makes you straighten your posture just walking through the door. This hotel holds a Forbes Four Star and fits the Ritz-Carlton template well: renovated rooms with a modern-classic feel, that famously gracious service, and a cable car stop right outside for anyone who wants to arrive without a town car and a fleece vest.

  69. Rank 269. Ayahuasca Cantina

    Mezcal Mexican

You enter through the back of a neighboring cafe, down a hallway, through a wooden door, and suddenly you're somewhere else entirely. This moody Oak Cliff speakeasy-style cantina stocks only bottles sourced from Mexico, and the cocktail menu is organized by historical era, walking you through the evolution of Mexican drinking culture. A James Beard Outstanding Bar semifinalist, it also does pre-Hispanic Oaxacan small plates for when the mezcal needs company.

  70. Every room at this Williamsburg hotel comes with its own city-view balcony, which tells you roughly what you're dealing with. The rooftop holds a 15,000-square-foot public park with rolling hills and picnic blankets, so it doubles as a neighborhood hangout rather than a private amenity. The interior leans into the borough's art-forward instincts without overdoing it, and the skyline views from up top are the kind that make Manhattan feel like a reasonable commute.

  72. Ski-in/ski-out from Empire Pass, with staff who will warm your boots and help you buckle them if you ask, which sets the tone for the whole operation. Montage Deer Valley is a full-scale mountain resort with craftsman-style rooms, a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, and year-round access to hiking, biking, and fly-fishing when the snow melts. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a Michelin Key.

  73. Rank 273. Sauvage

    Natural Wine Bar

A converted cottage on McDowell Road that smells faintly of old rugs and good intentions, Sauvage is a natural wine bar and bottle shop where the list leans toward obscure regions and the staff will talk you through all of it. Charcuterie and tinned fish are always on hand, and local chefs occasionally pop up to cook. Esquire named it one of the best bars in America, which the room, unhurried and candlelit, seems entirely unbothered by.

  74. The ninth floor penthouse suites have their own private elevator, which tells you everything about how The Dupont Circle Hotel pitches itself. It's a Doyle Collection boutique property with a midcentury-meets-contemporary feel, planted squarely between embassy row and the White House. Downstairs, the bar carries a serious Irish whiskey list and the coffee counter runs striped pink-and-white cups. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  75. The signature scent is Southern magnolia, pumped through the lobby before you even spot the flowers. This Forbes Four Star hotel occupies a Beaux Arts building that spent its previous life as a department store, and the bones show in the best way: grand marble, a lush courtyard with a fountain, and guest rooms that feel lifted from a proper New Orleans mansion. Canal Street is right outside when you need it, and the jazz lounge is right inside when you don't.

  76. Bay windows framing the Mississippi River are a good place to start with The Windsor Court, a Forbes Four Star hotel that plants a bit of English countryside inside New Orleans' business district. The 316 rooms run sky-blue and cream, with traditional furnishings that somehow don't feel stiff. A full-service spa, pool, and The Grill Room round it out, the last one drawing the kind of crowd that actually made a reservation.

  77. Ian Schrager's Lower East Side hotel skips the front desk entirely: check-in happens when a "PUBLIC Advisor" finds you in the lobby. The idea behind the place is that luxury and accessibility don't have to be mutually exclusive, which sounds like a tagline until you see it in practice. It's on the World's 50 Best Hotels list, and the Michelin Guide has it selected. Stylish without the velvet-rope attitude, which in New York counts for something.

  78. The hotel lives inside a grand old pier building in Fell's Point, Baltimore's densest stretch of bars and restaurants, with the harbor right outside and a rooftop pool that feels improbably right. Guest rooms lean design-forward, there's a steakhouse on site, and the whole place hums with the neighborhood's energy rather than hiding from it. One Michelin Key for those keeping score.

  79. The bones of a 19th-century brewhouse, chimney stacks and all, give this mid-sized hotel its industrial-chic personality before you even check in. It holds a Michelin 2 Keys distinction and sits inside the Pearl, a riverside stretch that has become San Antonio's most interesting neighborhood, with farmers markets, a CIA campus, and a cluster of serious restaurants all within walking distance.

  80. The skylight in the lobby dates to the 1920s, hidden until a renovation uncovered it. The Jefferson is a luxury hotel two blocks from the White House, decorated throughout as a quiet monument to its namesake: custom furniture based on Monticello originals, framed maps of places the third president loved, rooms with his words on the walls. The staff can hold a proper conversation about all of it. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

  81. A library with working fireplaces sits at the heart of this alpine resort, which puts it squarely between the gondola and lift at the base of Aspen Mountain. The 179 rooms lean into dark woods and leather club chairs, and the St. Regis butler service means someone is quietly attending to details you hadn't thought to request. The kind of crowd that plans a ski trip the way others plan a wedding fills the place all season.

  82. The wide black awning stretches almost the full width of Park Avenue, which tells you everything about the register this hotel is playing in. It's a luxury Upper East Side property with an old-money residential feel, rooms styled like Manhattan apartments, and the kind of quietly confident lobby that makes newcomers stand up a little straighter. Central Park is a short walk, Madison Avenue boutiques are closer still.

  83. The grand staircase descending from the Villard Mansion gates is the kind of entrance that makes you feel like you've arrived somewhere, even if you live nearby. This midtown luxury hotel spreads across a landmarked 19th-century mansion and a modern tower, with marble bathrooms, deep beds, and work desks in the standard rooms. The Triplex Suites climb to 5,000 square feet with Art Deco details and private rooftop terraces, if you're keeping score.

  84. Private cottages tucked into 550 acres against the Santa Ynez Mountains, with the Pacific spread out below. San Ysidro Ranch is a resort that has been a discreet hideaway forever, the kind of place where Winston Churchill and the honeymooning Kennedys came specifically to be left alone. The cottages are the point, not the lobby scene. It landed on the World's 50 Best Hotels list, which tracks for somewhere this quietly serious about making guests disappear.

  85. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the library look out over Chicago Avenue, which sets the tone for a hotel that frames the city as part of the decor. It sits on the Magnificent Mile in the Gold Coast, and the rooms and public spaces carry the cool, contemporary feel of a recent top-to-bottom renovation. The art collection leans Chicago, the staff leans warm, and the whole thing earns its Forbes Four Star without ever seeming to try.

  86. A butler, a bottle of champagne, and a ceremonial saber await at this grand hotel two blocks from the White House, where the nightly sabering ritual sets the tone. The coffered ceilings and Palladian windows date to an opening presided over by Coolidge, and the corner of 16th and K has been D.C.'s definitive power address ever since. A Forbes Four Star property, and the kind of place foreign dignitaries treat as a given.

  87. The mirrored back bar, lit from behind like a stage set, makes the priorities clear before you even sit down. Midnight Rambler is a subterranean cocktail lounge under the Joule Hotel, all art deco bones and low light, with a soundtrack chosen as carefully as the drinks. The cocktail program leans neo-classic, and the bartenders are the kind who can track down whatever obscure thing you're about to describe to them.

  88. The annual menu at this downtown Phoenix cocktail bar arrives as a lavishly illustrated tome, and the bar takes its ice quality as seriously as its recipes. Ross Simon's self-stated motto is "whimsical as fuck," which coexists happily alongside one of the coldest martinis in the city, served in red-leather booths under tall ceilings. A Spirited Awards Regional Top 10 Honoree, it draws a queue worth joining online before you arrive.

  89. Red-brick facade, wrought-iron balconies, mosaic tilework, and the Pacific about twenty feet away: Casa del Mar is a grand beachfront hotel in Santa Monica that has been drawing California's well-heeled to the sand since the Roaring Twenties. The eight-story property holds restaurants, a spa, and an outdoor pool overlooking the waves, plus a beach concierge who can sort you a surfboard. It holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star, in case the ocean view left any doubt.

  90. Shutters on the Beach is a luxury hotel sitting right on the Santa Monica sand, designed by Obama White House decorator Michael S. Smith in a style that mixes California ease with a little Northeast polish. Hockney and Oldenburg hang on the walls, fireplaces anchor the cozy corners, and the sea air follows you through the lobby. It holds a Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key, and the crowd that books it tends to already know that.

  91. Floor-to-ceiling illuminated pillars playing curated digital art greet you before you even reach the casino floor, which sets the tone for this sprawling Strip resort. The Cosmopolitan runs a serious collection of restaurants from celebrity chefs, popular bars, boutique shops, and a pool scene that converts to an ice rink come winter. The crowd skews stylish and self-aware, which fits a hotel that opened during a recession and never once acted like it.

  92. A Forbes Five Star hotel in Uptown, The Ritz-Carlton Dallas opens with a marble-and-chandelier lobby that earns every cliché and then tries to top it with a House of Krigler perfumery tucked into the corner. Guest rooms run gray and sleek with enough technology to distract from the views. Dean Fearing's Southwestern restaurant anchors the dining, a 12,000-square-foot spa handles the recovery, and a poolside situation fills the middle hours.

  94. A hundred classics and eight seasonal originals on the cocktail menu, which is either a philosophy or a dare. This is the Houston cocktail bar that regulars will tell you changed the city's drinking culture, and they are not wrong to say it. The brass-accented room runs loud and energetic, the staff can talk you through any corner of that list, and the salty snacks exist to keep you at the bar longer.

Dark wood, sink-in seating in bold colors, and cocktail names that tip you off early: this is a cocktail bar that wants you to stay longer than you planned. Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
