The Best Places in the United States

Drink + Stay + Do, change section
  1. Mid-century lines, leather and velvet, and eclectic artwork set the tone in the lobby of this boutique hotel tucked into the Gold Coast, where historic mansions and designer boutiques crowd the sidewalk outside. The 247 rooms lean luxe without tipping into stiff, the vibe is hip without the velvet-rope attitude, and a complimentary Lexus house car is the kind of quiet flex that earns its keep. Nico Osteria draws locals in off the street.

  2. Olson Kundig designed the building, and you can feel it: forest greens, midnight blues, velvety textures, and lobby shelves stacked with books about treehouses and cabins. This hotel sits a short walk from Pike Place Market, threading the needle between Pacific Northwest rusticity and a sleek urban nightlife pedigree. The rooms lean masculine and warm, with furnishings that look comfortably broken in rather than showroom-fresh.

  3. Rank 703. Highball

    Cocktail Bar

Cocktail menus organized light to full-bodied are a small kindness this bar extends before you've even ordered. Highball is a dimly lit cocktail bar on the second floor of a historic building in downtown Phoenix, doing the speakeasy thing with genuine commitment. Housemade ingredients show up throughout a lengthy menu where the flavor combinations tend toward the unexpected. A James Beard Outstanding Bar semifinalist, and a first-date spot that actually earns the designation.

  4. Reclaimed wood and polished concrete set the tone at this eco-minded luxury resort on Collins Avenue, where the design borrows from surf culture and the building materials were sourced before the Instagram grid was even a concept. It occupies a full city block of beachfront with Atlantic views on one side and the Biscayne Bay skyline on the other, and carries a Michelin Key. The crowd arrives with reusable water bottles and very good luggage.

  5. Rows of reclaimed leather belts line the wall behind the front desk, which sets the tone for this 171-room boutique hotel in the Domain Northside shopping district. Hill Country rusticity runs through the whole property: cowhide chairs, blue velvet armchairs by a fireplace, and a neon phrase borrowed from a Texas Tornados song. It holds a Forbes Four Star rating, and sits close enough to the Austin tech campuses to pull a reliably well-dressed business crowd.

  6. Fifteen acres of Newport Beach waterfront, a Forbes Four Star resort where the concierge can send you off in a vintage Mustang, color of your choosing, with maps and a packed picnic basket. Summer concerts, outdoor films, and Fourth of July barbecues keep the calendar full. Drive the coast toward Laguna Beach, and if the timing cooperates, blue whales and dolphins are out there doing their thing too.

  7. Fifteen minutes north of South Beach, which is just far enough to feel like a different city, this oceanfront luxury resort sits two rooms per floor along the Atlantic, so the building never feels like a scrum. The two-story lobby leans into the drama with jatoba columns, leather walls, and an Ed Moses canvas you can't miss. A Forbes Four Star property, closed for renovations through late 2026, so time your visit accordingly.

  8. The awards

  9. Fourteen rooms and suites dressed in retro European style, split between a busy French Quarter street and a quiet inner courtyard, with just enough eclectic detail to make you feel like you're staying somewhere rather than merely sleeping somewhere. The Celestine is a small hotel with a Michelin Key, and its social life pools around Peychaud's, the courtyard cocktail bar named for the local bitters, where guests gather as if on cue.

    The awards

  10. A Dallas hotel set inside an old cotton and oil magnate's estate, where the wood-paneled bar runs jazz three nights a week and afternoon tea happens in the library as if that's perfectly normal. Thomas Pheasant's redesign kept the French doors and crown molding and added the kind of modern comfort that makes you forget you're sleeping in a piece of Texas history. Miron Crosby cowboy boots in your room are a nice touch.

    The awards

  11. A 19th-century mansion on its own private peninsula in Newport, Castle Hill Inn sits where Narragansett Bay opens up and the light does something unreasonable at sunset. The 33 rooms spread across the main house and shingled cottages along the water. Breakfast, afternoon tea, a lighthouse trail, and sunset sails are all part of it. Forbes Four Star and a Michelin two-key property.

    The awards

  12. Mediterranean-style resort spread across a hillside outside San Diego, with a Tom Fazio golf course, a spa, six restaurants, and four pools wired with underwater speakers for reasons you will either love or find deeply alarming. Guest rooms lean into the fantasy, with marble soaking tubs, fireplaces, and balconies big enough to mean it. A Forbes Four Star property that covers every angle, including an Explorer's Club for kids so the adults can actually use the cabanas.

    The awards

  13. The Heathman has been anchoring Portland's performing arts district long enough that the neighborhood grew up around it. It's a boutique hotel in the truest sense, with rooms that feel considered rather than corporate, and the kind of downtown location that puts you within walking distance of theaters, museums, and serious dinners. The renovation leaned hard into sustainability, which fits Portland's self-image perfectly. Headwaters downstairs handles Pacific Northwest seafood when you don't want to go far.

    The awards

  14. The atrium lobby sits inside what was once Portland's grandest department store, glazed terra cotta still gleaming nine floors up. The Nines is a luxury hotel that leans into that past without turning itself into a museum, placing commissioned work from local artists alongside the occasional artfully staged mannequin. In a city where a flannel shirt passes for formal wear, the place offers a quiet, unapologetic dose of glamour.

  15. Ski-in/ski-out access to Big Sky Resort, three fly-fishing rivers nearby, and a Tom Weiskopf golf course next door keep the itinerary full at this Forbes Five Star, Michelin Key mountain resort. When you come in from the cold, the walls of windows, deep leather chairs, and roaring fires make sure you know you're still in Montana, just a warmer version of it. The spa runs to 11,000 square feet, in case the slopes weren't enough.

    The awards

  16. Kelly Wearstler folded a 1920s Spanish Colonial building into a new construction on Wilshire, which is a neat trick and exactly the kind of thing you notice when you check in. The boutique hotel sits a few blocks from the beach, rooms running bright whites and sand-colored fabrics with vintage furniture doing its best to look casual about it. The rooftop bistro draws nightly crowds and Surya Spa has a following. Michelin awarded it one Key.

  17. Rank 718. Platform 18

    Cocktail Bar

The digital windows scroll through passing landscapes while you sit inside a wood-paneled Presidential Pullman car that never moves, which is either the concept or the joke, possibly both. Platform 18 is a reservation-only immersive cocktail bar built around Prohibition-era drinks and Roaring Twenties New York. The Pinnacle Guide awarded it 2 Pins. Book ahead; walk-ins go nowhere fast.

  21. Rank 722. Carry On

    Cocktail Bar

The cabin is dressed in burnt orange and warm walnut, the windows show a looping blue-yonder reel, and a flight attendant is rolling the beverage cart your way. Carry On is an immersive cocktail lounge built around the first-class, Mad Men-era flight fantasy, preflight announcements and all. Reservations drop weekly and go fast, so plan accordingly. The Spirited Awards named it a Top 10 U.S. Nominee for Best New Cocktail Bar.

  26. The ceiling is covered in thousands of clay churchwarden pipes, each one claimed by a regular who never came back to collect it. Keens is an old-school Manhattan steakhouse in Midtown, all dark wood and white tablecloths, and the mutton chop alone has landed on the New York Times list of the city's defining dishes. The porterhouse is USDA Prime, dry-aged in-house, and broiled without apology. It sits at number 68 on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

  32. Rank 723. The Buena Vista

    Cocktail Bar

The bar faces San Francisco Bay, with Alcatraz and the Golden Gate framed in the windows, which does a lot of the work before you even sit down. The Buena Vista is an old-school saloon that claims credit for introducing Irish coffee to America, and the bar staff still make them in assembly-line batches. Come at 9am or midnight; the order is the same either way. It won the Spirited Awards' Timeless U.S. Award in 2024, which is about right.

  37. Rank 723. Tiki-Ti

    Polynesian Cocktail Bar

A tiki bar so small it was once a violin-repair shop, which tells you everything about the square footage and nothing about the ambition. Three generations of the same family have been pouring Mai Tais under the thatched canopy on Sunset since the sixties, and they do not serve beer or wine, so don't ask. Modern tiki bars tend to look like this place photoshopped. The original is still doing it straight.

  39. The whole room is built to look like the cargo hold of a 19th-century ship, portholes and all, which sets the stakes early at this immersive tiki bar on Indian School. The cocktail menu runs from classics to the team's own riffs on the genre, leaning into the full theatrical bit without apologizing for it. Phoenix New Times named it the city's top tiki bar, and the Spirited Awards put the bar team among the top four in the U.S.

  40. Floor-to-ceiling windows look straight across the East River at the Lower Manhattan skyline, a view few New York hotels can match. This eco-minded luxury hotel sits at the edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where salvaged materials and low-impact design feel less like a brand statement and more like a natural fit for a waterfront that was industrial wasteland not so long ago. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Key.

  41. Each of the twelve rooms in this Midtown Village boutique hotel is named for a woman who passed through when the building housed the New Century Guild, an early feminist organization. The rooms themselves are eclectic and photogenic without feeling like a theme park, and the service is full hotel, not glorified B&B. No restaurant on-site, but the concierge earns their keep pointing you toward the neighborhood. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

    The awards

  42. Jewel-toned marble tiles in the bathrooms set the tone for this boutique hotel on Carondelet: unapologetically luxe but somehow never stuffy. The rooms feel like sleeping in the home of a wealthy friend with excellent taste and a light touch, the kind of place that holds a Michelin Key without making you feel like you need to dress for it. New Orleans has no shortage of grand hotels; this one just makes grand feel easy.

  44. Every room has a balcony facing the Atlantic, which is a strong opening move for a Forbes Four Star hotel on Fort Lauderdale Beach. The Ritz-Carlton here runs the full playbook: Frette linens, a sprawling spa, and an on-site seafood restaurant with a wine room staffed by a sommelier who actually wants to talk. The crowd skews toward people who packed nicer luggage than you did, but the ocean view is the same for everyone.

    The awards

  45. Four golf courses on 800 acres tell you what this resort prioritizes, and everything else, the rooms, the spa, the pool complex, the dining, gets scaled to match. Trump National Doral Miami sits about eight miles from the airport and twenty minutes from the beach, close enough to Miami without actually being in it. A Forbes Four Star resort that runs large in every direction, it draws golfers, families, and business travelers who want serious amenities without a South Beach scene.

    The awards

  46. The red awnings and sweep of red carpet announce this grand Back Bay hotel before you've even reached the door. Inside, the lobby is all ornate plasterwork and soaring ceilings, the kind of architecture that has made it a recurring film location and a perennial power-lunch backdrop for Bostonians. The guest rooms have been refreshed without scrubbing away the old-money atmosphere that makes the place worth staying in over a newer option.

    The awards

  47. Mahogany beds, armoires, toile wallpaper, and a George Washington portrait in the lobby bar: Market Pavilion Hotel was built in 2002 and willed to look like it wasn't. The boutique hotel sits in downtown Charleston with more than 300 pieces of original art chosen by the family that owns it. Upstairs, a rooftop bar cuts against all the colonial gravity. Grill 225 handles steaks on the ground floor for anyone who needs grounding.

    The awards

  48. A terrace overlooking the Washington Marina keeps the vibe grounded even though the Jefferson Memorial is a short walk away. This 373-room hotel on the Southwest Waterfront sits close to The Wharf and the National Mall, with a lobby that signals money without shouting. Chef Kwame Onwuachi's Afro-Caribbean restaurant Dōgon runs separately downstairs, and the spa gives you a reason to stay in.

  49. The room key reads "no need to break in," and the hotel leans into that history rather than apologizing for it. Luigi Moretti's curving building on the Potomac got a sweeping renovation, with Ron Arad handling the interiors and the "Mad Men" designer dressing the staff, resulting in something that feels genuinely retro-modernist rather than merely themed. Monochrome rooms, Potomac-facing balconies, a rooftop bar, and a whisky bar for co-conspirators round out the package.

  50. Perched on a 150-foot bluff above the Pacific, this Forbes Four Star resort has been the Southern California coastal fantasy since forever, and a recent head-to-toe renovation leaned hard into the setting. Rooms run sage, sky blue, and petal pink; the spa goes jewel-toned and misty. The lobby on a weekend holds a cheerful cross-section of the country, united by saltwater taffy at check-in and strong opinions about which pool to claim.

    The awards

  51. There's no sign at the end of the drive, which tells you something about the clientele. This Forbes Five Star Adirondack camp resort sits on a private peninsula of Upper Saranac Lake, stone fireplaces and twig furniture in every room, and guests dress for black-tie dinner twice a week around a communal table. Snowshoeing, croquet, and champagne at 4 a.m. are all equally on offer, which is roughly the point.

    The awards

  52. A Forbes Five Star ranch resort spread across 6,600 acres between the Pintler and Sapphire ranges, where the dress code is essentially "do you own a vest." Granite Lodge anchors it all, a two-story stone and timber building with a massive hearth, game tables, and guest rooms named for horse breeds and firearms. Days go toward trail riding or skiing; evenings toward Missoula Mules beside the fire, which is a perfectly reasonable way to end up in Montana.

    The awards

  53. Rank 779. Milady’s

    Cocktail Bar

  54. The pink stucco towers have been sitting at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain long enough that the mountains feel like a backdrop the resort commissioned. This Forbes Five Star destination resort sprawls across thousands of acres and treats activity planning as a competitive sport: falconry, zip lines, golf, fly fishing, pickleball, a movie theater, and bowling all coexist without apology. "Bottle Alley," a glassed-in Prohibition-era wine cache, lines the walls of the main building.

  55. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame either the Mississippi or a cosmopolitan sunset, depending on which side you land. This Four Seasons tower sits at the center of downtown Minneapolis, opening directly onto the Skyway, so the lobby pulls in a buzzing local crowd alongside hotel guests. Rooms lean into soft curves and a quiet Art Deco sensibility. The hotel holds a Michelin Key and is part of a group that took the Most Admired Hotel Group Award at the 50 Best.

  56. The Burger Joint, a self-consciously divey counter slinging smash patties, is tucked behind a curtain in an otherwise polished lobby, which tells you something about this hotel's sense of humor. Thompson Central Park is a high-end boutique hotel in upper Midtown, rebuilt from a legacy property with mid-century Modernist bones courtesy of architect Thomas Juul-Hansen. Upper floors look out over Central Park.

  57. Flowers cascade through the lobby and gardens wind between the buildings, giving this Beverly Hills luxury hotel the feel of a greenhouse that happens to offer room service. Rodeo Drive is a short walk away for anyone who brought a serious credit card. The fourth-floor pool draws a loyal mix of locals and guests, and the patio at Culina stays busy with people who know exactly what they're doing on a Tuesday afternoon.

  58. One causeway separates Key Biscayne from downtown Miami, but the island reads more like the Caribbean than South Florida. This Forbes Four Star resort spreads across oceanfront acres with a vast spa, twin pools, and an eleven-court tennis complex that signals how seriously guests take their leisure. Rooms run to colonial-inflected pastels and breezy fabrics, and the dining options cover everything from coastal American to a beachfront Mexican spot.

  59. The awards

  60. The vaulted ceilings and Venetian Gothic stonework on Michigan Avenue give away that this was never meant to be a hotel, and it wasn't, for most of its life. The Chicago Athletic Association is now a boutique hotel under Hyatt's Unbound Collection, holding a Michelin Key, and the bones of the old private club, once restricted to the city's male elite, do most of the atmospheric heavy lifting without anyone having to try too hard.

    The awards

  61. The awards

  62. The lobby doubles as an active train station waiting room, which makes check-in feel like a minor performance art piece. The Crawford is a boutique hotel tucked inside Denver's restored Beaux-Arts Union Station, holding a Michelin Key, and sitting at the center of the LoDo neighborhood's comeback. The 112 rooms sit above the bustle of one of the city's genuinely communal gathering spots, with rail passengers and cocktail drinkers sharing the same grand hall below.

    The awards

  63. A Federalist townhouse on Beacon Hill, XV Beacon is a boutique hotel where all 63 rooms come with a four-poster bed, a working fireplace, and fresh flowers, which is either very romantic or a lot of pressure, depending on your companion. A house Lexus will ferry you around the city, and the concierge knows the neighborhood the way only someone who works it every day can. Old Boston in the best, least stuffy sense.

  64. Rank 792. Bar Goto

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

The Sakura Martini, a sake-and-gin affair finished with a salted cherry blossom, is the thing people come back for at this tiny, warmly lit cocktail bar on Eldridge Street. Kenta Goto spent years at Pegu Club before opening this place, and the short menu of original drinks leans on Japanese ingredients, house infusions, and a quieter kind of precision. Small enough that nobody is a stranger for long.

  66. Rank 794. The Sazerac Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The Sazerac Bar holds the rights to both the Sazerac cocktail and the Ramos Gin Fizz, which says something about the confidence of the Roosevelt Hotel's lobby bar. Dark wood paneling, murals, and a long bar that has been drawing New Orleans in formal and informal attire for generations. It's sophisticated without being stiff, which is a harder trick than it sounds in a city that takes its drinks this seriously.

  67. The awards

  68. Perched on a ridge above Batiquitos Lagoon, this Forbes Four Star resort near San Diego keeps guests busy enough that leaving feels optional. An Arnold Palmer-designed golf course, a 15,000-square-foot spa, six tennis courts, and a croquet lawn cover the bases, with mountain-to-Pacific views doing the rest of the convincing. Fine dining and casual spots are both on-site, so you can calibrate the formality as you go.

  69. The awards

  70. A gray limewash exterior sets this boutique hotel apart from the red-brick streetscape around it, and the care inside matches the gesture outside. A walled garden channels old Charleston without the kitsch, marble and brass bathrooms feel like a decorator's pet project, and the spa was modeled on the developer's own carriage house. A Michelin Key hotel in the heart of downtown, it's the kind of place that was clearly someone's obsession before it was anyone's reservation.

    The awards

  71. Three buildings, two Victorian and one new, were stitched together on George Street to make this 25-room luxury boutique hotel a Michelin Key holder in the heart of Charleston. The interiors lean into the bones of the older structures, bold wallpapers and period ornament, then pull it all forward with a sharp modern palette and furniture that clearly someone had strong opinions about choosing.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
