The 11 Best Places to Eat and Stay in Beyoğlu

The best places to eat and stay in Beyoğlu, according to the experts: The 50, Michelin Guide, and Forbes Travel Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Neolokal comes out on top.

More Less

The Peninsula Istanbul and Aliée Istanbul hold the next two places. World Coffee Map shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide close behind.

  1. Rank 1. Neolokal

    Modern Turkish

The terrace looks out over Istanbul's rooftops and minarets, which is a hard view to follow with anything, and yet the kitchen tries. Neolokal is a fine dining restaurant in Salt Galata where Maksut Aşkar runs a modern Turkish menu built on old recipes reconsidered rather than discarded. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on the World's 50 Best list. The crowd leans into the occasion.

  2. A clocktower built by the Ottoman sultan's own watchmaker still keeps time outside this Bosphorus-front hotel, which sets the tone. Turkish architect Zeynep Fadillioglu stitched together three historic buildings, including a 1930s cruise terminal whose turquoise tiles reappear throughout, into something that feels less like a renovation than a conversation across centuries. The 177 rooms face the water, and the Forbes Four Star property earns its place on one of the world's great waterfronts.

  3. A hotel on the Golden Horn built inside what was once one of Istanbul's great shipyards, with exposed stone walls and arched windows left deliberately bare in the rooms so you remember what the building has been through. Handwoven silk rugs and carved marble sinks handle the luxury angle, while The Pink Bar and a restaurant housed inside an actual house inside the lobby lean into spectacle. The Well + Spa runs across three levels and holds a hammam, saunas, and a lap pool. One Michelin Key.

  4. The rooftop Terrace Bar looks straight at Galata Tower on one side and the Bosphorus on the other, which is either lucky or suspiciously well-planned. This eighteen-room boutique hotel in a neoclassical building in Beyoğlu doubles as a rotating exhibition space, with Turkish and international artists hung across every floor. The ground-floor library does coffee. Istiklal Avenue is steps away, so the dining question answers itself.

    The awards

  5. A side-street restaurant off İstiklal Avenue that takes Turkish cooking seriously without taking itself too seriously. The kitchen works with vegetables and local produce to give familiar flavors a lighter touch, though nothing feels stripped down or timid. Ezine cheese, dried sour cherries, herb oils, Turkish wines: the pantry is proudly local. Come à la carte or let the set menu make the decisions for you.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
