The best cocktail bars in London, according to the experts: The 50, Michelin Guide, and National Restaurant Awards have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. KOL MEZCALARIA comes out on top.

More Less

Tayēr + Elementary and Connaught Bar hold the next two places. Difford's Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

Drink, change section
  1. Rank 1. KOL MEZCALARIA

    Modern Mexican Cocktail Bar

Santiago Lastra's Michelin-starred Marylebone restaurant runs on a single conviction: Mexican soul, British ingredients. Nearly everything on the tasting menu is sourced from the UK, with sea buckthorn standing in for lime where lime won't grow. The wine list leans into Slovakia, Georgia, and Croatia rather than the usual suspects, and the final courses move downstairs to a mezcaleria that smells exactly like you'd hope.

  2. One cocktail bar split into two very different moods. Elementary faces the street with draft Old Fashioneds and Aquavit on tap, a One Sip Martini menu, and prices that won't require a sit-down afterward. Pass through the partition and Tayēr goes darker and quieter, with seasonal menus that change fast and ingredients that lean toward the unusual. The brutalist concrete and exposed steel read warmer than they should. Ranked fifth on the World's 50 Best Bars.

  3. Rank 3. Connaught Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The martini trolley arrives tableside like a small piece of theater, the bartender waiting while you choose your gin, your bitters, shaken or stirred. This is a cocktail bar inside one of Mayfair's grand hotels, all platinum silver leaf walls and candlelit grey marble, and it holds a Forbes Five Star and a spot on the World's 50 Best Bars. Bar snacks run through the afternoon; canapes take over by evening. Dress accordingly.

  4. Rank 3. Satan's Whiskers

    Cocktail Bar

Taxidermy on the walls, vintage booze ads by candlelight, and hip-hop on the sound system: Satan's Whiskers is a Bethnal Green cocktail bar that looks grungy from the outside and somewhat like hell from the inside, in the best possible sense. The menu changes daily, so regulars who've memorized the classics are always slightly off-balance. It holds a spot on the World's 50 Best Bars and has done the top-slot thing at Top 50 Cocktail Bars more than once.

  5. Rank 3. Scarfes Bar

    Cocktail Bar

Gerald Scarfe's caricatures cover the walls of this cocktail bar inside the Rosewood London, turning a room full of leather-bound books and low couches into something between a drawing room and a satirist's fever dream. The fire is real, the wood panelling is deep, and live jazz runs nightly. It holds a spot on The World's 50 Best Bars, and the crowd around the fireplace rarely whispers.

  6. Rank 6. Kwãnt

    Cocktail Bar

The man who ran the American Bar at the Savoy for nearly eight years now runs this sleek Mayfair cocktail bar a short walk from Green Park. Erik Lorincz built Kwãnt around drinks that don't resemble anything else in London, layering fermented teas, misos, and awamori into compositions that feel genuinely considered rather than merely unusual. It ranks on the World's 50 Best Bars list. The room is calm and grown-up, which lets the cocktails do the talking.

  7. Rank 7. Three Sheets Soho

    Cocktail Bar

The cocktail menu here is built around restraint, which sounds modest until you taste what that actually means. Three Sheets Soho is a neighbourhood cocktail bar from the Venning brothers, landing on both the World's 50 Best Bars and Europe's 50 Best Bars lists. Seasonal rotations sit alongside signatures, oysters come free with a Martini order, and the whole room feels like it's trying less hard than it should be able to at this level.

  8. Rank 7. Waltz

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

The elm counter runs eight metres and seats a dozen, which matters because where you sit shapes what you drink at this Japanese cocktail bar in Shoreditch. Counter seats unlock the full menu, split between seasonal pours and "Evergreen" cocktails built on fermentation, carbonation, and centrifugal clarification. The seasonal side nods to Japan's 72 micro-seasons. Ranked fifth on Top 50 Cocktail Bars, it pulls a crowd that knows the difference.

  9. Rank 9. Bar Kinky

    Cocktail Bar

A copper-vaulted room below Charlotte Street that fits maybe six people around a central island bar, which means the bartender is always close enough to explain why there's blue cheese in your cocktail. This subterranean cocktail bar leans hard into savory and unexpected, pairing vodka with beetroot and walnut or whiskey with horchata and milk tea. Named in the Top 50 Cocktail Bars, and the non-alcoholic menu gets the same treatment.

  10. Rank 9. EQUAL PARTS

    Cocktail Bar

A rotating menu, a backbar built around agave spirits, and a crate of rare records that actually gets played: this Hackney Road cocktail bar has a lot going on without feeling like it's trying. The whole team develops the drinks together, which gives the staff something to say about every bottle on the shelf. It landed at number 26 on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list, if that helps calibrate expectations. Open seven days.

  11. Rank 9. Lyaness

    Cocktail Bar

Ryan Chetiyawardana's cocktail bar on the South Bank builds its menu around five house-made ingredients, things like tree caramel and thunder mushroom, that sound like a fantasy novel and drink like a revelation. The space runs gold, blue, and silver, open and unhurried. The menu, called the Ancestral Cookbook, explains itself at the back for anyone who blank-stared at "death bitters," which is most people, and that's rather the point.

  12. Rank 9. SOMA

    Indian

A nine-metre steel bar anchors this tiny, dark speakeasy tucked beneath the Kricket restaurant group's original Soho site. The cocktail menu, called "In Search of the Divine," pulls from the Indian subcontinent, so your Old Fashioned comes with coconut and jaggery and your margarita gets chaat masala. It holds 23 people, runs until 3am, and operates mostly on walk-ins, which either sounds chaotic or ideal depending on your evening. Ranked in the Top 50 Cocktail Bars.

  13. Rank 13. Murder Inc.

    Dive Bar

Neon red signs glow against the brick walls of this Soho dive bar tucked down a backstreet off Tottenham Court Road, and the name is the only thing scary about it. The team behind the Cocktail Trading Company runs the room, keeping cocktails at £11 and deliberately un-fussy while landing something that feels like beauty and filth in quiet agreement. Sick tunes, a pet piñata, and no pretension anywhere in sight.

  14. Rank 13. Side Hustle

    Latin American Cocktail Bar

The marble bar inside the old Bow Street Police Station is a lot more welcoming than it once was for guests. Side Hustle is a Latin American cocktail bar inside the NoMad hotel in Covent Garden, with an agave-heavy drinks list that ranges from tequila and mezcal classics to more inventive builds. Tacos and tostadas keep things grounded. It ranked 12th on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list for 2026.

  15. Rank 13. Swift Soho

    Cocktail Bar

Two floors, two different nights out: the ground floor runs a tight list of classics and house cocktails, while the basement lounges deeper, with live music on weekends and over 300 whiskies to work through. Booking downstairs is advised, which tells you something. The cocktail menu leans into a travel theme the team rotates, and Swift landed at number 15 on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list.

  16. Rank 13. The Spy Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The entrance was once a guard room, and the spy theme here stops well short of kitsch. This cocktail bar at 57 Whitehall forbids photography, which feels appropriate given the building's history, and the moody, close interiors make the rule easy to respect. The Martini is the organizing principle, with drinks named for Cold War tradecraft and wartime intelligence networks. It ranked 43rd on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list for 2026.

  17. Rank 17. AMARO BAR

    Cocktail Bar

A black granite bar seating ten anchors this intimate cocktail bar on Kensington High Street, where the team has roots in the Savoy's Beaufort Bar. Vintage cocktails dating back to the 1960s sit alongside a tight menu of originals at around £15 a pour. Dogs are welcome; football shirts are not. Ranked seventh on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list, it accepts reservations but keeps room for walk-ins.

  18. Rank 17. Bar Termini

    Italian Cocktail Bar

A narrow Italian cocktail bar on Old Compton Street that sells bottled Negronis to go, which tells you most of what you need to know. The menu is short by design, built around a handful of Aperol spritzes, Marsala Martinis, and wine cocktails, with enough burrata and charcuterie to keep you honest. The bar staff will make classics off-menu without fuss. Ranked eighth on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list for 2026.

  19. Rank 17. Viajante87

    Cocktail Bar

The signature martini is served at -20°, which is either an engineering feat or a dare, and the answer matters less than the fact that it arrives. This intimate cocktail bar on Notting Hill Gate builds its rotating menu around the team's travels through Latin America, so the spirits and syrups shift with the season and the itinerary. Ranked 33rd on Top 50 Cocktail Bars 2026, it draws a dressed-up crowd who came prepared to be transported somewhere specific.

  20. Rank 20. Happiness Forgets

    Cocktail Bar

Painted concrete steps and a metal railing are the only entrance to this basement cocktail bar under Hoxton Square, which has been called the bartender's bar in London without anyone arguing too hard. The room is small and rough around the edges, guests are seated and served at the table rather than propped at the bar, and the drinks are precisely the kind that make you forget you walked down stairs to get them.

  21. Rank 20. Three Sheets

    Cocktail Bar

The menu is split into One Sheet, Two Sheets, and Three Sheets, which tells you exactly the kind of cocktail bar this Dalston spot is: knowing, a little cheeky, and very good at drinks. The Venning brothers have built something deliberately unfussy, with a tight seasonal list that changes often enough to reward repeat visits. Ranked 32nd on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list, it draws a crowd that actually reads the menu rather than defaulting to a gin and tonic.

  22. Rank 22. Artesian

    Cocktail Bar

Named for the 360-foot artesian well buried under the hotel's foundations, this cocktail bar at The Langham is all rattlesnake-leather floors, silver-leaf walls, and timber chandeliers, a David Collins interior that reads more cabinet of curiosities than hotel drinking room. The drinks match the room's ambition. It holds a Pinnacle Guide pin and a five-star rating from Difford's Guide, which is about as serious as cocktail credentials get.

  23. Rank 23. Archive & Myth

    Cocktail Bar

A secret code at an ornamental door off Cranbourn Street gets you into this cocktail bar tucked behind the Magic Mike Live entrance at the Hippodrome. Inside, exposed brick and vintage memorabilia set a moody, cabinet-of-curiosities tone, and the drinks lean into the theme: vintage spirits from past decades appear on the menu alongside more experimental builds. It landed at number 18 on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list for 2026.

  24. Rank 23. Nipperkin

    British Cocktail Bar

Vintage vinyl lines the shelves and a pair of decks sits tucked behind the bar, which tells you something about how seriously this Mayfair cocktail bar takes atmosphere. It lives inside the restaurant Nijū but operates on its own quiet logic, the kind of place where the hospitality anticipates what you need before you say it. The drinks are inventive without being showy, and the room feels more like a living room than a scene.

  25. Rank 23. Trailer Happiness

    Tiki Cocktail Bar

Cork tiles, shag pile, and Zombies served in tiki mugs: Trailer Happiness is a basement cocktail bar in Notting Hill that leans hard into mid-century Californian trailer-park kitsch and never apologizes for it. The room feels like a bachelor pad that got stuck in 1966 and decided to stay, which is more or less the point. Rum drinks and tiki culture are the whole religion down here, and the vol-au-vent energy is entirely real.

  26. Rank 26. Disrepute

    Cocktail Bar

Art deco interior, deliberately low-lit, tucked into Kingly Court's covered yard off Carnaby Street. This is a cocktail bar that leans Italian aperitivo: the menu summarises itself as "luxurious libations and late-night liaisons," which is either perfectly on-brand or mildly incriminating depending on your evening. Drinks are elegant without being theatrical, garnishes kept in check. It ranked 45th on the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list, which the room carries without making a fuss about it.

  27. Rank 26. Dram

A 17th-century Grade II listed building on Denmark Street hiding two bars, a whisky shop, an outdoor terrace, and a private pool room with a cocktail vending machine, which feels either ridiculous or brilliant depending on your mood. This multi-floor cocktail bar puts serious thought into its drinks, with menus shifting by floor and cocktails available both on tap and made to order. 28. A small nameplate and a rather larger bouncer mark the entrance on Gerrard Street, with red stairs climbing past Chinatown's rooftops to one of London's few cocktail bars that also runs dim sum until late. Three floors, three distinct moods: a casual lounge at the top, an apothecary bar where you sit amid the bartending action in the dark, and a curtained back room for 30 if you know to look. Ranked among the UK's top cocktail bars, and the menus alone are worth examining.

  29. Velvet is a hotel cocktail bar in the Corinthia, dressed in so much red velvet it could pass for the inside of a very expensive jewelry box. Salvatore Calabrese, a famous bartender, is behind it, and his Negroni svegliato pairs Campari with coffee. Live jazz plays most nights, the lights stay low, and the menu includes a cocktail that costs £450, so budget accordingly. It's open until 1am Tuesday to Saturday.

  30. You reach it through a quiet cobbled mews off St James's Street, past a row of old stables, which is either romantic or mildly confusing depending on your navigation skills. The American Bar inside The Stafford Hotel is an old-school hotel bar draped in decades of accumulated Americana: baseball caps, club ties, and model planes hang from the ceiling alongside photos of guests ranging from Dolly Parton to Margaret Thatcher.

  31. Rank 30. China Tang

    Chinese Cocktail Bar

  32. Rank 30. Hacha

    Mexican Cocktail Bar

The name comes from the axe used to split an agave piña, which tells you everything about how seriously this Kingsland Road bar takes its subject. Around two dozen tequilas, mezcals, and lesser-known agave spirits rotate through the back bar, and the Mirror Margarita, served in tequila or mezcal form, has become the thing regulars order without looking up. A proper agave bar in a neighborhood that didn't need another generic cocktail spot.

  33. A martini bar tucked inside the St. Pancras hotel, where the Gothic Revival grandeur does most of the decorating. The martinis arrive so cold they drink like ice water, a nod to Dukes that gets dangerous around the second one. Cocktails run about £17, the dress code is hotel-bar sophisticated, and the building is the one the Spice Girls tore through in the "Wannabe" video, so the bar has a lot to live up to.

  34. Rank 30. The Donovan Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The Donovan Bar is the dim, clubby cocktail den tucked into a Mayfair hotel, where the menu runs from a normal £25 martini up to a vintage daiquiri that costs about as much as a used car. Nobody makes you order the car. The room is sultry and surprisingly unstuffy, a good setting for a punchy martini, some light public affection, and a quiet moment of financial reflection.

  35. Rank 35. The Sun Tavern

    Cocktail Bar

Raw brick, hanging tankards, and cabinets of curios give this Bethnal Green boozer the look of a pub that's been around forever, which it more or less has. In practice it's a cocktail bar wearing a tavern's coat, and the bartenders know exactly what they're doing. Ten taps pour ales from microbreweries within ten miles for anyone who wants to keep it simple, and punch bowls sit alongside for anyone who doesn't.

  36. Rank 36. Cahoots

    Cocktail Bar

A vintage London Underground carriage parked in the middle of a Soho cocktail bar sets the tone early. Cahoots leans hard into its 1940s Blitz-era conceit, with a speakeasy vibe, live music, and vintage DJs to keep the period piece from feeling static. The cocktail list matches the theme, all rum and bourbon combinations with theatrical names. You'll need to book ahead for entry, which, at a bar built around a secret, feels about right.

    The awards

  37. Rank 36. Coupette

    French Cocktail Bar

Vintage coins pressed under the bar top set the tone at this Bethnal Green cocktail bar, where the room splits neatly between neighbourhood ease and something more considered. The French accent runs deep, calvados showing up in more places than you might expect, but the drinks are built to be enjoyed rather than admired. The 50 Discovery from The World's 50 Best Bars is the kind of nod that fits: low-key, but hard to ignore.

    The awards

  38. Rank 36. Little Mercies

    Cocktail Bar

The same team behind Three Sheets runs this moody, minimalist cocktail bar tucked into a Crouch End parade of shops, which is either the last place you'd expect to find serious mixology or exactly where you'd hide it. The drinks toggle between the familiar and the quietly strange: an Old Fashioned with caramelised white chocolate, a martini stirred with avocado leaf cordial. Locals fill most of the seats, but people do make the trip.

  39. Rank 36. Punch Room

    Cocktail Bar

The punch bowl is the whole point here, a cocktail bar tucked behind the lobby of the London Edition that has committed to the format so thoroughly that sharing is basically mandatory. 41. Rank 40. Nightjar

    Cocktail Bar

You book online and put a card down just to get through the door, which tells you something about how seriously Nightjar takes itself as a cocktail bar. The pre-war speakeasy atmosphere on City Road runs to live jazz, blues, ragtime, and the occasional cabaret set, so you're choosing between a quiet corner for the drinks or a front-row seat to the whole production. Either way, the program is the point.

  42. Rank 42. 69 Colebrooke Row

    Cocktail Bar

The bar bills still come printed from "The Bar With No Name Ltd," even though there's now a branded canopy outside giving the whole speakeasy game away. This tiny cocktail bar on a quiet Islington corner seats fewer than forty, so ring ahead. Inside, eight green industrial lamps hang spider-like over a two-tone room that lands somewhere between 1950s Italian café and serious molecular mixology den, which is a combination nobody else is attempting.

  43. The Savoy Cocktail Book was written here, which tells you everything about where this cocktail bar sits in the pecking order. Black-and-white photos of Sinatra and a roll call of legendary bartenders line the walls, and the room carries that weight without trying too hard. It's all dark wood, white-jacketed staff, and a sense that the person mixing your drink could answer almost any question about the Martini.

  44. Rank 42. Cartizze

  45. A cocktail bar born from misfortune, Casual by Tayēr started as the team's answer to a fire that shuttered their original spot. Tucked inside Cato on Mercer Street, it runs as a pop-up series, each chapter riffing on a new theme through the Tayēr lens. The drinks pull from both sides of the original pairing, Tayēr's creativity meeting Elementary's precision, and the tight space puts you closer to the bartenders than almost any bar stool could.

There's no sign outside, just a bell to push and a lobby that makes you feel like you're about to do something mildly illicit. 52. Monkey nuts spill out of tankards and the wall behind the bar is stacked floor-to-ceiling with bottles in every color imaginable. This cocktail bar on the edge of Brick Lane dresses like an old British pub but drinks nothing like one: bartenders in braces produce whimsical concoctions that arrive in flasks tucked inside envelopes, garnished with edible golf balls and general nonsense. 55. Rank 42. The Pisco Bar

    Peruvian Cocktail Bar

Glass demijohns of infused pisco line the bar at this subterranean Peruvian cocktail bar tucked beneath Coya on Piccadilly. Cocktail Bar

Dukes Bar is a small, old-school martini room tucked inside a St. James's hotel, where Ian Fleming drank and "shaken, not stirred" is said to have been born. The glasses and spirits live in the freezer, and the drinks are mixed at your table with enough ceremony to make you forget the carpet. Expect strong pours, a hushed room, and cocktail prices that suit the postcode.

  58. Rank 59. The Beaufort Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The back-lit bar front glows like a stage set, which is fitting given that this is exactly where the Savoy's old cabaret stage once stood. The Beaufort Bar is a cocktail bar done in black and gold, all deep carpets, plush upholstery, and enough gold leaf to make a Dubai hotel blush. The bartenders perform accordingly. A classic London hotel bar, except louder about it.

  59. A basement cocktail bar below a Malaysian restaurant in Queen's Park, where the first challenge is finding the bell push to get in. The plaster walls are styled to look damp, which is a choice, and the dimly lit room leans hard into cellar speakeasy. The house cocktails do the heavy lifting, though the kitchen upstairs means the bar snacks are far better than they need to be.

  61. Rank 61. 65 and King

    Cocktail Bar

A zinc bar, wrought-iron stools, and neon signs make the American Deco pitch boldly, but an open fireplace and vintage glassware keep it from feeling like a theme park. This Notting Hill cocktail bar leans into the Manhattan fantasy with enough warmth and genuine antique paraphernalia to make you forget it's a bit of a concept. The cocktail list is long and inventive, which is ultimately the whole point.

  62. Rank 61. Bar 45

    Creative Cocktail Bar

The cocktail bar inside 45 Park Lane, the Dorchester's boutique sibling, has quietly been letting Wolfgang Puck's restaurant take all the attention. That suits the bar just fine. The team behind the stick has pedigree from the Dorchester and the Savoy's American Bar, and the drinks menu shows it, with combinations that feel considered rather than clever-for-its-own-sake. A civilized place to drink well without the full Mayfair production number.

  63. Rank 61. Berners Tavern

    Cocktail Bar

  64. The copper-topped bar and wood-panelled walls give this Soho cocktail bar the feel of someone's very well-stocked living room, which suits the mood upstairs from Jason Atherton's Social Eating House. The drinks are serious, and the bar snacks, pork sliders and duck rillettes among them, are the kind of thing that makes leaving harder than it should be. "Dill or No Dill" remains on the menu, which tells you enough about the room's personality.

  65. The indoor cigar lounge is technically a "sampling room," which is the kind of legal creativity that keeps Scotch-and-jazz bars alive. This two-floor Canary Wharf outpost of the Belgravia original runs a crustacean and cocktail bar on the first floor alongside a heated terrace looking out over Cabot Square. Champagne and single malts do most of the heavy lifting, and pre-revolutionary Cuban cigars are available if the evening calls for it.

  66. Rank 61. Callooh Callay

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar on Rivington Street that takes its name from the Jabberwocky poem, which sets expectations correctly: the room is smaller than it looks, then larger than it should be, with a wardrobe somewhere in the middle that leads somewhere else. The Mad Hatter aesthetic could easily tip into theme-park territory, but the drinks keep it honest. Shoreditch has no shortage of bars pretending to have personality; this one at least has a family portrait on the wall.

  67. A basement cocktail bar beneath a City pub, with a name that sounds like it handles mergers but actually refers to the house's two signature batched cocktails: the Demon, something stiff and stirred, and the Wise, a lighter sour. Each batch is different, and a snooker scoreboard above the back bar counts down however many pours remain. The suits filing in after close of trade probably don't mind the urgency.

  68. White-jacketed bartenders shake the house martini the same way they do at the Barcelona original, which has been doing it this way for what feels like forever. This cocktail bar sits deep inside the Meliá White House Hotel, tucked into the no-man's-land north of Euston Road where tourists rarely wander and hotel guests sometimes stumble upon it by accident, which is arguably the correct way to find a very classical cocktail bar.

  70. Rank 61. Galante

    Art Deco Cocktail Bar

  71. Rank 61. Gilbert Scott Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The bar sits inside St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, which means Victorian gothic arches, ornamental mouldings, and a ceiling hung with enormous church bells that are, it turns out, fiberglass. Nobody asks. The room leans into the maximalism hard, all gilt and warm colour, and it manages to feel intimate despite the grandeur. A cocktail bar where the architecture does a lot of the talking, and the talking is quite loud.

  72. Rank 61. Joyeux Bordel

    Cocktail Bar

  73. A sliding door at the back of a fake launderette leads you into this speakeasy cocktail bar tucked inside The Breakfast Club's Clapham spot. It's the South London sibling to The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town, where the trick is a vintage fridge. Here the ruse is spin cycles and detergent shelves. Book ahead if you can, or ask nicely at the front and keep your voice down about why you're really there.

  74. Rank 61. Merchant House

    Cocktail Bar

Down a cobbled passage off Bow Lane, past the church whose bells once defined who counted as a true Cockney, this subterranean lounge bar takes the British Empire as its organizing obsession. Gin and rum anchor the menu, with bottles running from rare old releases to new arrivals, and the cocktail list follows suit with imperial-themed drinks. The kind of dim, tucked-away room that feels like a find every time.

  78. Rank 61. The Blue Bar

    Cocktail Bar

Cherubs drip from a ceiling above walls painted in a shade of blue that became known as "Lutyens" blue after this room, which is a bit like naming a color after a single very good outfit. The Blue Bar, tucked into the Berkeley Hotel, is a small, opulent cocktail bar with a white onyx counter and a black crocodile-print floor. Sit at the bar itself; the entrance annex is quieter but you'll feel like you're watching through a window.

  79. Seven hundred and fifty scarlet glass spikes cover the back wall of this hotel cocktail bar, which is not what anyone walking through the Dorchester's stately lobby expects. The room went full nightclub somewhere along the way, all high-backed booths and bronzed glass, with a DJ where a pianist used to sit. The drinks, to their credit, stayed classical, which is probably what the older regulars are quietly clinging to.

  80. Rank 61. The Four Sisters

    Cocktail Bar

  81. You get into this basement cocktail bar by walking through a Smeg fridge in the back of The Breakfast Club. Ask quietly at the door whether there's room downstairs, because the whole point is that it's a secret, and they'll let you hold that fiction together. Below, rough wood, vintage posters, and unsettling dolls set the mood, while the bathroom wallpaper is an education in one-hit wonders and deeply regrettable 1980s haircuts.

  83. Rank 61. White Lyan

  84. A blackboard on the street gives the game away, so it's not quite a speakeasy, but climbing past the packed pub downstairs still earns you the reveal: a dark, narrow cocktail bar of leather, wood, and slatted blinds that feels like a 1930s detective agency someone converted into a gentlemen's club. Copper tables catch the low light, the L-shaped room keeps things intimate, and the crowd upstairs tends to know exactly what they came for.

  85. Formerly a bank vault, which explains both the bolt-studded pillars and the sense that you've stumbled somewhere you weren't supposed to find. All Star Lanes is a basement bowling alley and bar off Bloomsbury Place, where four lanes share space with a cocktail bar and a tucked-away VIP room with two more. The Americana theme leans in hard, but the converted vault setting earns it a little irony the décor didn't plan for.

  88. Rank 89. Booking Office

    Cocktail Bar

The sixty-foot vaulted ceilings of St Pancras's old booking hall are now a cocktail bar, which means you're drinking under gothic ironwork built to sell train tickets to the Victorians. The drinks lean into that: the menu is built around Victorian-era recipes and English ingredients, the kind of concept that could easily be too clever, but the room is so genuinely cathedral-scale that the theme disappears into the architecture.

  90. Rank 89. Bubbledogs

    Cocktail Bar

Grower champagne and hot dogs, together at last. Bubbledogs is a small, lively bar on Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia where the pairing sounds like a dare but draws a queue outside most nights, since reservations are reserved for larger groups. Bare brick, high tables, and lab stools set the tone: this is not a place for ceremony. The menu is narrow by design, which is the whole joke, and somehow the joke holds up.

  91. Rank 89. BYOC

    Cocktail Bar

There's no sign outside, and the door is behind the counter of a juice bar, which is either annoying or part of the fun depending on your mood. BYOC is a candlelit basement speakeasy in Covent Garden with a twist: the house doesn't sell alcohol. You bring a bottle, pay a flat fee per person, and the bartender spends two hours turning it into bespoke cocktails using a vintage trolley of juices, herbs, bitters, and spice.

  92. Rank 89. Cafe Royal

    Cocktail Bar

The 1937 Cafe Royal Cocktail Book was written here, which tells you something about the building's relationship with a good drink. The bar itself, tucked off Air Street behind a discreet Art Deco sign, is darker and more industrial than the grand hotel around it would suggest. Dark green glass bricks line the walls, and an island bar anchors the room. A cocktail bar, in other words, that takes its history seriously without making you sit through a lecture about it.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
