Rank 1. Causa
Peruvian
A tucked-away tasting menu for about 20 people in Blagden Alley, Causa fuses Japanese technique with Peruvian ingredients in a cuisine called Nikkei. The chef structures the meal as a journey from Lima's coast up through the Andes to the Amazon, so the menu moves with a logic you feel before you understand it. It holds a Michelin star and a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. Bring someone you want to impress, or just go alone and take notes.

Rank 2. Oyster Oyster
Vegetarian American
A nine-course vegetable tasting menu in Shaw where the chef holds a James Beard Award and a Michelin star, and still manages to make a beet taste like pastrami. Rob Rubba's kitchen treats local farms as the whole point, not a selling line, and the results are the kind of thing that makes omnivores quietly reconsider their priorities. The bread alone, enriched with "garleeks" and served with sunflower-marigold butter, gets talked about for days afterward.

Rank 3. The Dabney
American
The wood-fired hearth in the open kitchen sets the mood before anything arrives at the table. This fine dining room in a Shaw alley does Mid-Atlantic cooking with a Southern undertow, and the chef's commitment to the region shows in everything from rooftop herbs to the catfish slider that's been on the menu since forever. A Michelin star keeps company with crowds who dress up but aren't stiff about it.

Rank 5. 2Fifty
Barbecue
The American Wagyu brisket is the kind of thing that makes you briefly reconsider your whole life. This counter-service BBQ spot smokes everything over wood, and the lineup, brisket, pork ribs, and smoked turkey, has the room packed early and the bags out the door fast. The sides pull their weight too, particularly the brisket-studded beans. A James Beard semifinalist in 2026, it ranked tenth on Washingtonian's list that same year.

Rank 5. L'Ardente
Italian
The 40-layer lasagna, built with short rib and truffled mornay, is what most people are already planning to order before they walk in. This Italian restaurant in the Capitol Crossing development earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand, with a wood-burning grill and pizza oven doing plenty of heavy lifting alongside the pasta. Soaring ceilings make it feel a bit grand for a Tuesday, but the counter seats keep things grounded.

Rank 8. Cucina Morini
Italian
The bar is packed before most tables are seated, which tells you something about how this place operates. Cucina Morini is a Sicilian-leaning Italian restaurant where the menu sprawls in the best way, pastas are made in house and offered in half portions so ordering more feels principled rather than excessive. The chef's James Beard semifinalist nod tracks; the food is careful without announcing itself.

Rank 9. Baan Siam
Thai
The khao soi here arrives in a shade of marigold so vivid it looks like a color swatch, topped with a tangle of fried noodles over chicken that's been cooked into submission. This Northern Thai restaurant in Mount Vernon Square skips the pad see ew and the crowd-pleasing standards entirely, leaning into the regional cooking the chef built her reputation on. The New York Times put it on their D.C. list, and the room fills up accordingly.

Penn Quarter's modern Indian restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by taking traditional regional cooking seriously, then quietly upgrading it, naan by naan. The room is relaxed but the kitchen isn't cutting corners: expect paneer and slow-cooked dishes built on good ingredients rather than approximations of them. The cocktail list, including an alcohol-free selection, gets equal attention, which is either reassuring or a warning about how long you'll linger.

Rank 10. Your Only Friend
American
A sandwich bar that also takes cocktails seriously, Your Only Friend sits in Shaw with a menu full of pun names and a genuinely considered drinks list. The sandwiches lean into comfort food done with some wit, and the sides and bar snacks fill out a meal without much effort. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, which means the kitchen is doing something right at a price that won't sting.

The seafoam-green booths say classic American diner; the kale nachos say something else is going on. This Shaw spot runs on familiar comfort food remixed just enough to keep things interesting, from meatloaf with sriracha and morel gravy to cauliflower with tahini and fried chickpeas. Brunch draws a crowd for egg dishes and sandwiches, and the lemon meringue pie is not optional. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and you'll want a reservation.

Rank 13. Baan Mae
Southeast Asian
The "FiLao-O-Fish" slider, a catfish riff on a certain drive-through classic, tells you everything about what Seng Luangrath is doing at this Shaw restaurant. Her Laotian cooking already had a following from Thip Khao, but this newer spot pushes wider, folding in Burmese and Thai flavors while staying loose and fun. Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants in 2025, and the room tends to fill fast.

Rank 13. CherCher Ethiopian Restaurant
Ethiopian
CherCher is an Ethiopian spot that took over what was once a rowhouse living room, and the platters still arrive like someone's relatives are visiting. Expect injera for scooping, berbere-spiced meats, and a vegan combination so sprawling it could feed a small congregation. There are no reservations, so go on a weekday and bring friends who don't mind sharing from one big plate. It's casual, loud in the right way, and easy on the wallet.

Rank 13. Rumi’s Kitchen
Persian
The tandoor oven visible through the display kitchen sets the tone: this is a full-scale Persian restaurant with a dining room grand enough that you wonder if you underdressed. High-backed banquettes, earthy colors, and an inviting bar soften the scale considerably. The menu runs classic, from lamb shank braised in tomato stew to baklava, with a rosewater-and-pistachio ice cream sandwich for anyone who wants to go slightly sideways at dessert.

Rank 18. Beloved BBQ at Love, Makoto
Japanese
The neon hallway cuts through the dark room like a sign that you're not at a standard chophouse. Beloved BBQ is a Japanese steakhouse where central circular grills anchor each table and A5 Wagyu is the main event, cooked tableside. The fried rice, finished by the server so every grain catches the fat, is the kind of dish that quietly upstages the headliner. Find it inside Capitol Crossing.

Rank 18. Tiger Fork
Chinese
Dragon murals climb the brick walls of this Hong Kong-style restaurant and bar tucked off the main road in Shaw, which means half the fun is finding it. The room goes dark and candlelit, the cocktails lean playful and strong, and the menu runs from cheung fun to chili wontons to glossy soy-and-ginger pork ribs. Fortune cookies arrive at the end, though the wisdom inside reportedly skews more Gucci Mane than Confucius.

A few blocks from the Capitol, this Irish-owned hotel chose to name itself after a Dublin park rather than lean into its politically charged zip code, which tells you something about its personality. Guest rooms run deep indigo against silver and white, elegant without being stuffy. The Dubliner downstairs is exactly the Irish pub you'd conjure if you closed your eyes and wished hard enough. Lobbyists tend to book elsewhere, which is probably a point in its favor.

A ten-story glass atrium sets the tone for this Capitol Hill hotel, which hangs commissioned artwork where most business-district properties hang generic prints. Rooms are spacious by DC standards, with pillow-top beds and Egyptian cotton sheets, and the gym and yoga studio are genuinely solid. Bistro du Jour turns out French classics in a room ornate enough that you almost believe it. Union Station is a short walk; the Supreme Court, a little less so.

Rank 28. Bar Chinois
Cocktail Bar
The martini here comes with pickled shiitake mushrooms, kombu, and bonito flakes, which tells you most of what you need to know about Bar Chinois. It's a French wine bar by aesthetic and an Asian dim sum spot by appetite, and the kitchen takes both halves seriously. The cocktails are genuinely theatrical, and the dumplings, shrimp toast, and braised pork meatball give you every reason to stay past the second round.

Rank 28. Chaplin's
Japanese Noodle Shop
Chaplin's is a ramen and dumpling spot in Shaw that also takes its cocktails seriously, which is either a coincidence or the whole point. The broth here runs deep, and the cold noodles with ginger and cucumber hold up as their own argument. The menu moves between gyoza, shumai, and chocolate lava cake with Cognac, a range that would be chaotic anywhere else but somehow reads as confident.

Rank 28. Family Ethiopian
Ethiopian
Yellow metal chairs and walls packed with art set the mood at this sibling-run Ethiopian restaurant on Ninth Street, where the kitchen is staffed almost entirely by women cooking from memory and intent. The family platter is the move: a spread of vegetarian and meat dishes across a wide sheet of injera, sour and spongy enough to handle the berbere-laced stews that follow.

Rank 28. Mandu
Korean
Soaring ceilings and a long bar give this Korean restaurant more of a neighborhood anchor feel than a quick-stop spot. The menu runs past the usual suspects into fiery stews and broths, steamed mandu, and vibrant banchan that lean homey rather than showy. The gamjatang, a bubbling pork-rib soup gone deeply red with gochugaru, is the kind of thing regulars order before they sit down. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

Rank 28. Ottoman Taverna
Turkish
A honeycomb-patterned wall and a floor-to-ceiling Hagia Sophia mural set the scene at this Turkish restaurant in Mt. Vernon Triangle, where the room does a lot of the talking before the food arrives. The menu runs through hot and cold meze, kebabs, and the kind of baklava that makes you order Turkish coffee just to have an excuse to keep sitting there. Dressy enough for a date, relaxed enough for a long Tuesday dinner.

Rank 28. San Lorenzo
Tuscan
Exposed brick, painted-tile floors, and photos of a Tuscan hometown set the mood at this neighborhood Italian restaurant in Shaw. The chef ran the kitchen at DC's beloved Tosca for years before opening this more personal room. Pasta gets serious attention here, and truffles show up more than once on the menu. The kind of place where the cooking feels like it has something to prove, in a quiet, unhurried way.

Rank 34. Seylou Bakery
Bakery
The in-house stone mill sets Seylou apart from every other bakery in D.C., whole grains going from kernel to loaf under one roof. The team ferments the dough and bakes in a wood-fired oven imported from abroad, which explains the crust on those pain au levain loaves. Mornings bring whole grain croissants and an espresso bar, and on Wednesday nights the sourdough becomes the base for pizza, which is either a great idea or a threat to your routine.

Rank 36. All-Purpose
Pizzeria
The long-fermented dough is the tell at this casual pizzeria: the crust has enough flavor that people actually finish it. Deck-oven pies share the menu with Italian-American standards like arancini, and the room draws the kind of crowd that orders feta ranch with chili oil on the side without needing to be told it exists. Two locations in Navy Yard and Shaw, with a counter-service slice shop in Bethesda if you're heading that direction.

Modern Spanish
The mollette, a pulled-oxtail sandwich with pickled vegetables and a sherry glaze, sits next to lobster and oysters on a menu that refuses to pick a lane, which is very much the point. Arrels is a modern Spanish restaurant where the cooking runs from rustic to refined without apology. The fideua, made with vermicelli, Manchego, jamón, and truffle cream, gives you a reason to linger well past the bread course.

The noodles come from Sapporo, which tells you something about how seriously this ramen counter takes its business. Downstairs, bowls of springy, custom-made noodles arrive in a long-simmered broth, with a vegetarian version that holds its own against the pork. Upstairs flips into a Japanese tavern pouring sake and yuzu cocktails alongside a full menu of drinking snacks. Two moods, one address, zero bad options on either floor.
