The Best Places in North Södermalm

  1. Twenty-three guests per sitting move through three floors of a Norrmalm townhouse as the courses arrive, which makes Frantzén less a restaurant than a choreographed evening out. The tasting menu is creative and theatrical, the room warm and upholstered in the way that signals you are not leaving quickly. It holds three Michelin stars and a spot on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, which tells you roughly what the bill will look like.

  2. Open-flame cooking in a dark-wood-panelled room beside the Stockholm Opera, with the Swedish parliament directly across the street, which is a lot of gravitas for one dinner reservation. This Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant runs seasonal tasting menus built around fire, with dishes that land somewhere between precise and quietly wild. The wine cellar behind glass is serious enough to stop the conversation.

  3. Rank 2. Dashi

    Japanese

Dashi, the Japanese broth the place is named for, shows up throughout the set menu here, including as a marinade for amberjack. A Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant on Rådmansgatan, it pairs a spare Nordic-minimalist room with an omakase-style format built around Swedish produce handled with real Japanese precision. A sake list running to some rare bottles rounds things out, and the Mont Blanc dessert has its own following.

  4. Three connected early-20th-century townhouses in a quiet Stockholm neighborhood, Ett Hem runs to just 22 rooms and is decorated to feel less like a hotel and less like a hotel every time you look at it. British designer Ilse Crawford handled the interiors, all low-key warmth and Swedish restraint. There's a sitting room, a winding patio, and a gym with a yoga studio. The name means "a home," which is either a promise or a lot of pressure, depending on your home.

  5. Gilded oak paneling from 1895 lines the walls of this grand fine-dining room inside Stockholm's Royal Opera House, where chandeliers and enormous paintings set a scene that could not be more celebratory if it tried. A young team runs it, the music leans cool, and the cooking is modern and international rather than stiffly formal. It holds a Michelin star and a White Guide Global Masters distinction. Dress up; the room will notice.

  6. Stockholm doesn't have many spots where you'll step over a dog to reach your table, but Babette, a neighborhood pizza joint on Roslagsgatan, pulls it off with charm. The pizza is Roman-style, thin and crispy with restrained toppings, and the small plates shift with the season. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on 50 Top Pizza World keep the room packed, so lean in, order a glass from the decent wine list, and make friends with your neighbors.

  7. The neo-Renaissance facade, all turrets and towers across the harbor from the royal palace, has been Stockholm's establishing shot since the 1800s. This grand old hotel carries that weight without flinching: Carrara marble floors, stately pillars, and a waterfront address that hasn't lost its argument. Nobel laureates and heads of state have all checked in, alongside travelers who simply wanted the best room in Sweden.

  8. Rank 8. BORD

    Mediterranean

A communal table anchors the room at this relaxed bohemian bistro on Roslagsgatan, where the daily menu blurs the line between starters and mains. The kitchen makes its own ricotta and runs a wood-fired oven from morning bread to evening langoustines, keeping the cooking pared back enough that the ingredients do the talking. Dinner is the main draw, with Saturday lunches a quieter bonus for those who know.

  9. Parked on the harbor between the Grand Hotel and the old town, this boutique hotel is essentially Stockholm's answer to the question of what luxury looks like when it stops trying. The design leans into history rather than minimalism, so expect mid-century chairs alongside things that feel almost rustic. A small music venue and a lounge round things out. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  10. A 1910 bank building turned boutique hotel, with marble bones and a Stockholm design sensibility layered on top. The interiors pull off the rare trick of honoring the original architecture without turning it into a museum. Rooms run small at the compact end, but all lean luxurious. Multiple restaurants on site, a Parisian-style bar, and a rooftop with views over the city center. Holds a Michelin Key.

  11. Gondolen sits in a gondola-shaped structure suspended above Stockholm's port, with the Old Town spread out below like a postcard someone forgot to send. It's a classic Swedish dining room for long, unhurried meals, recently restored and back in form, with a live jazz trio playing daily and a menu built around herring, vendace roe, and halibut done properly. On warm evenings, the roof bar Pelago handles cocktails and the same view.

  12. A Jaume Plensa sculpture commands the entry staircase before you've even checked in, which tells you most of what you need to know about this design hotel on Brunkebergstorg Square. The interiors lean into the square's Brutalist bones rather than apologizing for them, with a dark monochrome palette, museum-caliber art throughout, and rooms spacious enough that the desk doesn't double as the dining table. A proper drink cabinet replaces the minibar, a small but telling detail.

  13. The building's claim to fame, before it became a luxury hotel, was a 1970s bank robbery that gave the world the term "Stockholm syndrome." Now Swedish design trio Claesson Koivisto Rune has turned the 19th-century stone pile into something cooler, pairing original dark-oak-paneled rooms (the Heritage Board is watching) with a palette called "Scandinavian dark blond" and bathrooms wrapped floor-to-ceiling in Carrara marble. It holds a Michelin Key.

  14. Eighteen counter stools look straight into the open kitchen at Allegrine, a French brasserie on Kammakargatan where the menu runs from a simple lunch dish of the day to evening plates of frogs' legs and steak tartare. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. If choosing feels like too much, there's a surprise menu for two, which is either very romantic or a polite admission that the wine is already flowing.

  15. The Red Room, where August Strindberg set his novel of the same name, is now a hotel bar, which tells you something about this Belle Epoque landmark in central Stockholm. The 82 rooms were redesigned in cherry and marble, the suites leaning more extravagant, some with saunas or jacuzzis and interiors by Philippe Starck. The concert hall pulls everyone from DJs to stand-up comics, so request a room well away from the action if sleep is the plan.

  16. A red brick house on Södermalm that's been around forever, Hotel Frantz is a boutique hotel where the history is structural and the interiors look like a Mondrian had opinions. The colorful modernist rooms sit inside genuinely old bones, and the restaurant, bar, and a breakfast spread that leans toward lavish keep you from ever needing to leave. It holds a Michelin Key.

  17. The windows sit at pavement level, so you watch strangers' feet pass while you eat, which sets the tone for a place that does things slightly sideways. Prospero is a small bistro on Roslagsgatan running a concise tasting menu, priced for regulars rather than occasions. The cooking leans on sauces with a precision that feels more considered than the low-key room lets on. Bring someone who notices that kind of thing.

  18. The industrial bones here, by architect Thomas Sandell and designer Jonas Bohlin, set the tone before the food arrives: bold, a little theatrical, unapologetically generous. This neighborhood restaurant has been a Stockholm staple forever, and its classic Swedish cooking matches the room in scale and confidence. The Michelin Bib Gourmand keeps the regulars feeling smug, though they'd have come anyway. Tegnérlunden Park is right there for the aftermath.

  19. Velvet sofas, original tiled stoves, and rotating art exhibitions share the same room in this family-run hotel on a corner of Vasastan's old Siberia district. The lobby doubles as a living room, complete with board games and a bar that keeps things lively. Rooms run from compact singles to suites with Victorian bathtubs. Breakfast draws the neighborhood. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  20. Every month or two, Woodstockholm tears up the menu and starts over, built around a new theme, anything from Salvador Dalí to the Alps to astrology. It's a contemporary restaurant and wine bar on one of Stockholm's nicest squares, working with local and organic producers at communal tables and a bar. The kind of place where you book without knowing what you'll eat, which is either liberating or terrifying depending on your relationship with control.

  21. A Michelin-starred tasting menu restaurant that makes you earn the view: ring the bell in the back garden, ride the lift to the eighth floor, and you're handed a welcome drink on a terrace above the Stockholm rooftops before you've even seen a menu. Snacks in the bar come next, then a seat by the open kitchen. The kitchen and the room both shift with the seasons, and you can pair each course with wine, a cocktail, or a soft drink.

    The awards

  22. Bikes, kayaks, and skateboards are available at the front desk, which tells you everything about the vibe before you've seen the room. This Scandic hotel in the middle of Stockholm leans into the urban-explorer fantasy with twelve room types, from snug solo quarters to apartments sleeping twelve. The rustic-meets-city interiors feel very Stockholm, and the rooftop Nest Cocktail Lounge has panoramic views for when the exploring is done.

  23. The front door is a relic from when this building housed Stockholm's electric company, which sets the tone for a room that knows it has good bones. Inside, it's a chic Thai and Southeast Asian restaurant with soft lighting, an open kitchen, and cooking that moves across the region, laab, crying tiger beef, Vietnamese-style sashimi. Service is attentive without being stiff, and the prices won't require a sit-down afterward.

  24. The Crystal Bar claims what is plausibly Stockholm's largest chandelier, and the rest of the hotel leans into that energy. This luxury boutique hotel occupies a stately old building near the Royal Opera, decorated in Gustavian style with a French accent, updated in a renovation that kept the opulence and added modern color and comfort. Rooms vary in size the old European grand-hotel way, so it pays to look before you book.

  25. An Art Nouveau girls' school from the early 1900s, now a boutique hotel with a glass-and-steel addition by architect Gert Wingårdhs sitting quietly on top. The two eras don't fight each other, which takes more skill than it sounds. Rooms carry that particular Scandinavian ease where everything is considered but nothing announces itself. The restaurant leans into modern Nordic cooking, which in Stockholm is less a trend than a default mode of seriousness.

  26. An oxidized copper roof crowns this Jugendstil landmark on the waterfront at Nybrokajen, and the building's bones are suitably grand. Inside, a recent renovation has softened it into something more quietly contemporary, the kind of hotel that business travelers choose on purpose rather than by default. Superior rooms look out over the Stockholm archipelago, which is a nicer view than many suites elsewhere manage. Gamla Stan and Östermalm are both a short walk away.

  27. Rank 21. Seafood Gastro

    Nordic Seafood

Inside the Grand Hôtel, this Michelin-starred seafood restaurant stakes its whole identity on the tasting menu, a procession of langoustines, raw shrimp, and Oscietra caviar with Japanese touches folded in, wasabi here, a chawanmushi there. The kitchen treats every piece of fish and shellfish as though it cost a small fortune, which, to be fair, it probably did. Dress accordingly and go hungry.

  29. Rank 30. Bobergs Matsal

    Modern Nordic

The dining room inside Nordiska Kompaniet has looked the same since before anyone's grandparents were born, all gilded plasterwork and hushed department-store grandeur on the fourth floor. It's a proper sit-down lunch restaurant now steered by the team behind two-Michelin-starred Aira, running Nordic cooking with French undercurrents through a daily three-course menu and a full à la carte. The crowd tends to dress for the room, which is to say they've just been shopping somewhere expensive.

  31. The island of Skeppsholmen sits surrounded by Stockholm but somehow separate from it, and this boutique hotel occupies a pair of buildings that have been standing since the late 1600s. The restoration left the old bones alone and let well-chosen furniture do the talking, so modern and cozy manage to coexist without fighting. Locals cross the bridge for the bar and the afternoon coffee ritual, which is a decent sign the place hasn't gone full hermitage.

  55. Burl wood headboards custom-made for each room and retro radios on the nightstands set the tone at this design-forward hotel in Södermalm, which holds a Michelin Key. 58. A boutique hotel named for a flower-filled family cottage, Villa Dahlia hides soft-toned rooms, Murano glass, and dahlia-red accents behind a firmly Brutalist facade. The rooftop was made for evening views, there's pétanque in the courtyard, and a Nordic spa upstairs for when you've overdone it. Bikes are available to borrow, though the Michelin Guide awarded it a Key, which suggests staying put has its own argument.

  62. The name is set into a black iron gate so discreetly you could walk right past it. Once through, a courtyard garden leads to a trio of Arts & Crafts townhouses converted into a boutique hotel, where the restaurant runs across two rooms: one all sheepskins and candlelight, the other a country-house kitchen, open and unhurried. The cooking is seasonal and considered, the kind of dinner that makes a Stockholm Tuesday feel like a genuine occasion.

  64. A brick in the spa wall still carries a woman's footprint from when it was laid centuries ago, which sets the tone for this waterfront hotel in Gamla Stan. Rooms vary between vaulted medieval ceilings and wide views over the water to the old sailing ship Chapman. The Tjärn spa is built into Stockholm's original defensive wall. The Royal Palace and the old town's narrow lanes are steps away.

  66. A hotel on Djurgården, the park island where ABBA The Museum is practically a neighbor, Backstage is entirely devoted to theater and the creative arts, which means rooms that lean into drama rather than away from it. Think plush and slightly diva-adjacent. Next door is Konsthallen, a combined shop, bakery, and restaurant running all three meals. The staff apparently track what's actually happening around town, which is more than most hotels manage.

    The awards

  67. A lighting architect named Kai Piippo has quietly stolen the show from everyone else at this 169-room hotel a short walk from Stockholm's central station. The 1960s office-block exterior requires a leap of faith, but the inside is all Scandinavian minimalism, run through with shifting light installations. Mood rooms project moving patterns on the walls and cycle the headboard through a spectrum of wintry tones, which is either soothing or a lot, depending on your evening.

    The awards

  68. The kitchen and dining room share the same open space here, so you watch every plate come together while you eat. It's a relaxed Swedish restaurant in Östermalm where the cooking leans on seasonal produce and lands somewhere between farmhouse and finessed. The four-course nightly menu keeps things affordable without shrinking the ambition. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of neighborhood spot that makes the neighbors insufferably smug.

    The awards

  69. The bistro inside Stockholm's Grand Hôtel where Mathias Dahlgren runs an informal, modern dining room designed by Ilse Crawford. The menu reads like a love letter to Swedish seasons, moving through medium-sized dishes built on whatever just arrived, langoustines, squid, dry-aged beef. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks: this is serious cooking in a room where you don't have to whisper.

  71. Rank 95. Bistro Leoparden

    Modern Pizzeria

The airy, well-laced crust is the tell at this modern Stockholm pizza bistro, where the dough gets enough time and attention that it actually feels light rather than like a dare. The room is contemporary and comfortable, the kind of place where a relaxed evening doesn't require a dress code or a prior commitment to silence. Service is informal and switched-on, handled by a young staff that keeps the energy up without making it feel like a theme. Named among 50 Top Pizza Europe's Excellent Pizzerias.

  72. Blå Porten is a cafeteria-style cafe on Djurgården where you grab a tray, pick a salad or entrée, and work your way down a lineup of cakes and cardamom buns. It sits on a sprawling property with a long dining room and a garden, a short walk from the Vasa Museum, so the crowd is part tourist, part fika devotee. Eat outside by the fountain, since the indoor seating has the energy of a very nice school lunch.

  73. This is a pastry-case cafe in Norrmalm where fika is treated as a daily obligation, with cardamom buns on the larger, sweeter, less spiced side. It's smaller than the other branches in this little Stockholm chain, but it suits a coffee before the shops on Gamla Brogatan. The princess cake arrives in full green-marzipan regalia, stacked high with raspberries and cream, and nobody makes eye contact while eating it.

  74. Rank 98. Bar Europa

    Pizzeria

The owners opened this bar and restaurant on Södermalm with the stated goal of making it the worst possible place to bring a date, which in practice means high tables, bench seating along the walls, and a room designed to pull strangers into conversation. The kitchen is barely big enough for two chefs and an electric pizza oven, but turbot and sweetbreads come out of it anyway. Desserts nod to Swedish café nostalgia from the '90s, which lands better than it sounds.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
