The best French food in Hamburg, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and The 50 have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Restaurant Haerlin comes out on top.

More Less

Atlantic Restaurant and Félix hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

French elsewhere

  1. Inside the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, with windows facing the Inner Alster Lake, this fine dining room is one of Hamburg's most serious addresses. Christoph Rüffer has held three Michelin stars here, building a menu of creative French cooking where the technique stays quiet and the sauces do the talking. The wine list runs deep, and the classic service brigade moves with the unhurried confidence of a room that has nothing to prove.

  2. Rank 2. Atlantic Restaurant

    Contemporary French

Lobster bisque and whole sole anchor the classics menu at this fine dining room inside the Hotel Atlantic, which has sat on the Alster long enough to make "Hanseatic flair" sound like understatement. The kitchen runs two tasting menus, one omnivore and one vegetarian, alongside the table d'hôte for two. The room is old-school in the best sense, and the front-of-house team knows it. One Michelin star.

  3. Rank 3. Félix

    Classic French

A glass partition lets you watch the kitchen from your table, which sets the tone for this elegant little bistro tucked into a quiet villa neighbourhood west of the city centre. The menu is classic French, leaning heavily on fish and seafood, and changes each week. The wine list runs to serious French bottles. Saturday lunch is a good excuse to come out this far, then walk off the meal along the Elbchaussee.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
