The Best Places in Centre-Ville & Vieux Montréal

  1. The awards

  2. Rank 1. Toqué!

    Modern French

Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over one of Old Montreal's prettiest squares, and the dining room inside glows with hanging lights against burgundy and burnt orange. Toqué! is a fine dining institution and has been for decades, with Normand Laprise steering the kitchen toward Quebec's seasonal terroir through a seven-course tasting menu at dinner. A glass-paned wine cellar holding over 700 bottles sets the mood before you've even sat down.

  3. A dark glass tower above the Golden Square Mile, with Marcus Samuelsson running the food and a Guerlain spa waiting when the city wears you out. The hotel leans hard into a boudoir-meets-enchanted-forest aesthetic, all pink hues, velour, and a wraparound marble bar that makes leaving feel slightly irresponsible. Private residences on the upper floors mean some guests never actually leave, which tracks.

  4. Rank 4. Monarque

    Modern French

The soaring room on St-Jacques splits into a buzzy brasserie up front and a white-tablecloth dining room behind, which tells you something about who comes here and why. It's a modern French brasserie doing set menus at lunch and dinner, with a kitchen trained in France and quietly serious about aged meats and local sourcing. The power-lunch crowd fills in the rest of the picture.

  5. Rank 5. Maison Boulud

    Contemporary French

Daniel Boulud's fine dining room inside the Ritz-Carlton takes contemporary French cooking and runs it through a quietly New York sensibility, the kind of place that manages to feel grand without feeling stiff. The glass fireplace softens things considerably, and in summer the garden terrace pulls you far enough from Sherbrooke that the city politely disappears. Jackets are optional; the foie gras and pâté en croûte are not.

  6. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton got married here, which tells you most of what you need to know about the register this hotel has always played in. A grand, old-school property anchoring the Golden Square Mile, it sits close to the Museum of Fine Arts and a stretch of serious shopping. The rooms run quietly luxurious, the service formal without being stiff, and the whole place carries the easy confidence of somewhere that has never needed to explain itself.

  7. Floor-to-ceiling windows look straight into the glass-walled kitchen, so the brigade becomes part of the spectacle before the first course arrives. This is fine dining on the grander end, with silver service, Magdalen Islands lobster, and Appalachian venison built around Quebec terroir and French classical technique. A Michelin star sits above the door. The maple pre-dessert and aperitif pork rinds read as nostalgia, which turns out to be a smart move in a room this polished.

  8. John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their famous bed-in for peace here, which means this downtown Montreal hotel has been living off that story ever since, though a massive renovation has given it some new ones. The lobby pulls in local art and a genuinely urban energy, the rooms are warm rather than grand, and a 24-hour wellness center handles whatever the conference schedule did to you. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  9. Marcus Samuelsson's Canadian debut sits inside the Four Seasons Montreal, but the terrace restaurant earns its own look. The menu moves from crudos and seafood towers to robata-grilled cuts and whole fish, the kind of progression that suits a long, leisurely dinner rather than a quick bite. Expense accounts are comfortable here; personal ones survive happiest at happy hour. AAA Four Diamonds.

  10. Stone walls, wooden beams, and leather armchairs make this Old Montreal French restaurant feel like a private club where the membership requirements are a reservation and good taste in wine. The menu rotates with the seasons, leaning on local ingredients and the kind of sauces that remind you why French cooking got famous in the first place. The vibe is dim, intimate, and quietly romantic.

  11. The striped black-and-white awning marks this low-lit Italian restaurant on what is otherwise a quiet residential stretch of St-Jacques. The kitchen takes familiar Italian foundations and nudges them somewhere unexpected without making a fuss about it. Fellow restaurateurs and Montréal creatives fill the room most nights, which tells you something. Griffintown has changed around it, but Nora Gray has been the neighborhood's dinner-party reference for a long time.

  12. A plain façade on rue Sainte-Catherine hides a quietly ambitious modern restaurant that sits somewhere between casual lunch spot and date-night destination. The kitchen leans on delicate plating and sharp contrasts of texture, and the private-import wine list is the kind of thing the knowledgeable staff are happy to walk you through. Evenings skew a little dressier; lunches draw the crowd that figured out the value.

  19. A neo-Renaissance mansion in the Golden Square Mile, built for one of the city's 19th-century power brokers and now operating as a luxury hotel. The bones of the original residence are hard to miss: grand proportions, ornate stonework, the kind of architecture that communicates wealth before you've touched a door handle. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. It sits well outside the old port's hotel cluster, which is either a selling point or a cab ride depending on your mood.

  21. Rank 17. Le Serpent

    Italian Mediterranean

A former foundry in Griffintown, with ceilings high enough to lose a secret and exposed brick that somehow looks intentional, is now one of the more atmospheric Italian-Mediterranean restaurants in the city. The Carrara marble bar is a fine place to sit alone and feel cosmopolitan. Crudos lean bright and citrusy, pastas run deep and rich, and the menu is short enough that everything on it earns its spot.

  22. Rank 23. Cadet

    Spanish

A long counter, a partly open kitchen, and a minimalist room just off the Quartier des Spectacles mark this as a relaxed spot for sharing plates rather than a sit-down-and-settle-in kind of night. The same team behind Bouillon Bilk runs the show, and the tapas-style menu moves through combinations that feel considered without being fussy. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks with the vibe: good cooking, no ceremony required.

  23. Rank 23. Ferreira

    Portuguese

A long bar tiled in azulejos anchors this polished Portuguese restaurant on Rue Peel, where the room feels like it can't quite decide between Lisbon and a Manhattan brasserie, and pulls off both. The kitchen leans hard into fish and seafood, and the wine list runs to some 400 labels, mostly Portuguese, with ports and rare spirits that give the sommelier something to talk about. Upscale but not stiff.

  24. Chuck Hughes' seafood-forward bistro in Old Montreal hides behind a modest door in Old Montreal, opening into paneled ceilings, leather banquettes, and a chandelier that has no business being that dramatic. The blackboard menu shifts with the day, leaning heavily on oysters, wild prawns, and whatever else arrived fresh. The open kitchen splits two dining rooms buzzing to a soundtrack of unapologetic 80s and 90s hits.

  27. Robot room service is either the future or a sign we've given up on human contact, and Hôtel Monville has committed fully to finding out. This sleek, tower-style hotel in downtown Montréal leans hard into the ultra-modern, with architecture that turns heads on a street where cobblestones are usually the draw. Selected by the Michelin Guide, it appeals to guests who'd rather book everything on an app than talk to anyone at check-in.

  28. A Marriott Autograph Collection hotel in downtown Montreal, Humaniti fills its rooms and corridors with works by Québécois artists alongside colorful Modernist interiors by Lemay + Escobar. An expansive spa, rooftop pool, and a restaurant and lounge run by celebrated local chef Jean-Sébastien Giguère round things out. It's the kind of hotel that has done its homework, which in this category is less common than it should be.

  30. A 36-room hotel on Rue Saint-Jacques where the art installations are the décor, not something hung on top of it. Rooms are open-plan with modular seating that converts from desk to lounge to dining corner depending on the hour, and projections and textural materials run throughout. It has the energy of a boutique hotel that genuinely cannot decide if it's a gallery, which, depending on your mood, is either a feature or a lot.

  31. Most of the seating wraps around a Tetris-shaped open kitchen, which tells you immediately what kind of place this is: a snack bar built for watching the cooks, not lingering over a bottle. The palette runs aqua and salmon, the vibe is tropical without trying too hard, and the food is Nikkei Peruvian, meaning Japanese technique folded into Peruvian flavors. Small plates, bold colors, a lively crowd, and a tiradito that earned the restaurant its name.

  37. The alabaster fireplace in the lobby glows like a lantern, which is a strange thing to find inside a ten-story Beaux-Arts building in Vieux-Montréal. That contrast is the whole point of the St. Paul Hotel: a seriously spare, design-magazine interior dropped into a grand historic shell. High ceilings and big picture windows help. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels, and the neighborhood alone earns its keep on a long weekend.

  40. Rank 40. Place Carmin

    Brasserie French

A blood pudding Tatin is either a very confident move or a very Montréal one, and at Place Carmin it reads as both. This French brasserie in a converted industrial space runs high ceilings, skylights, and spherical fixtures overhead while the open kitchen does the real decorating. Duck à l'orange and foie gras terrine anchor the menu, and weekends bring a brunch and a Sunday roast that the neighborhood has clearly been waiting for.

  42. A curtain rises to dramatic music before the meal even begins, which tells you everything about the register of this omakase counter. Twenty-plus courses move from chawanmushi through nigiri made with fish you may not recognize alongside cuts you absolutely will, including otoro and Hokkaido uni. The pacing is relentless in a good way, and the theatrics are sincere rather than silly, which is a harder trick than it sounds.

  45. Rank 44. Kwizinn

Haitian poutine made with plantains and lobster tells you most of what you need to know about Kwizinn. It's a bright, casual Haitian restaurant in Verdun, the neighborhood southwest of downtown that's quietly become one of the more interesting places to eat in the city. Slow-cooked meats, spicy sauces, and recipes passed down through the chef's family form the backbone of the menu. Save room for the house-made donuts with mascarpone banana cream.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
