The Best Places in Central Business District & Lower Garden District

  1. Rank 1. Emeril's

    Cajun & Creole

EJ Lagasse took over his father's legendary Warehouse District fine-dining room at 22, after stints at Frantzén and Core by Clare Smyth, and now holds two Michelin stars. The tasting menu threads Creole classics through a contemporary lens, BBQ shrimp tarts and deep-flavored gumbo alongside smoked salmon cheesecake. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames the kitchen like a stage, and the service team plays the room with genuine warmth. Emeril's, basically reinvented.

  2. Rank 2. Pêche

    Seafood

A wood-burning grill and a marble raw bar anchor this rustic-industrial seafood restaurant on Magazine Street, where everything worth eating came out of the Gulf not long ago. The smoked tuna dip is reason enough to sit down, but the real move for a group is a whole fish with a few sides. Food & Wine named the team among its Best New Chefs in 2024, and the New York Times put it on their New Orleans list. Loud, convivial, no bad seats.

  3. Rank 3. Chandelier Bar

    Cajun & Creole Cocktail Bar

Chandelier Bar is the glamorous hotel lobby bar at the foot of Canal Street, all marble, crystal, and gold fittings, with a chandelier big enough to have lent its name and its crystal to the martini glass. Cognac shows up in the cocktails, including a fortified sazerac, and the bartenders are nicer than the surroundings strictly require. The potato chips arrive free, so dinner can technically be skipped.

  4. A 15,000-crystal chandelier greets you in the lobby, which sets the tone for this Forbes Four Star hotel tucked into a landmark tower where Canal Street meets the Mississippi. Rooms run white shiplap and river views; the rooftop pool gives you somewhere to be horizontal after a night of doing otherwise. Alon Shaya and Donald Link run the restaurants, and the spa is quietly serious about its job, which is no small thing this close to Bourbon Street.

  5. Rank 5. Compère Lapin

    New Orleans Caribbean

Curried goat over sweet potato gnocchi is the dish that quietly explains Nina Compton's whole project here. This Caribbean-inflected restaurant sits inside a converted coffee warehouse in the Warehouse Arts District, all exposed brick and mosaic tile, and the menu pulls together her St. Lucia roots, New Orleans flavors, and stints in Florida kitchens. The bar holds its own, and the service runs warm enough that a James Beard Outstanding Hospitality semifinalist nod makes a certain sense.

  6. Rank 6. Cochon

    Cajun & Creole

A converted warehouse in the Central Business District, Cochon does Southern cooking with a Louisiana accent: wood-fired oysters, fried alligator, gumbo loaded with house-made andouille, and rabbit and dumplings pulled from the chef's family recipes. The cracklins with Steen's cane syrup make a strong case for arriving hungry. The whiskey and bourbon list is long enough to make the decision feel important. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  7. Bay windows framing the Mississippi River are a good place to start with The Windsor Court, a Forbes Four Star hotel that plants a bit of English countryside inside New Orleans' business district. The 316 rooms run sky-blue and cream, with traditional furnishings that somehow don't feel stiff. A full-service spa, pool, and The Grill Room round it out, the last one drawing the kind of crowd that actually made a reservation.

  8. The name is short for "saint," not "street," which tells you something about how seriously they take the bit. A tile-lined slice shop up front gives way, through an actual curtain, to a dim room with dark wood and funk on the speakers. East Coast-style pies, a tight cocktail list, and chicken Parm that earns its place on the menu. Ranked seventh on 50 Top Pizza's Slice USA list, this Magazine Street spot has done real work putting New Orleans on the pizza map.

  10. Rank 10. Bar Marilou

    French Cocktail Bar

The tiger-print carpet and floor-to-ceiling scarlet bookshelves are a clue: this was once a city hall library, and the Parisian team behind Candelaria and Le Mary Celeste had the good sense not to gut it. Now it's a French cocktail bar leaning heavily on vermouths and amaros, the kind of place where the aperitif hour has a way of quietly becoming midnight.

  11. Rank 10. Herbsaint

    French-Italian Cajun & Creole

The table by the window on St. Charles is the one to request, and once you're in it you'll understand why this place has been around forever. It's a full-service restaurant where French and Italian instincts run through Cajun and Creole cooking without apology or explanation. The house-made spaghetti fills tables every night, and the duck confit with dirty rice keeps people coming back.

  12. Rank 12. Restaurant August

    Contemporary Cajun & Creole

Glittery chandeliers and wax candles do a lot of heavy lifting in this handsome fine dining room on Tchoupitoulas, where exposed brick and white tablecloths split the difference between grand and comfortable. The chef is a Louisiana native steering contemporary Creole cooking, and the kind of place where birthdays and anniversaries have been showing up for years. Friendly servers keep it from tipping into stiff-necked territory, which takes some skill when the room looks like this.

  13. Rank 13. Barrel Proof

    Cocktail Bar

Low-lit and unhurried on Magazine Street at the edge of the Lower Garden District, Barrel Proof is a neighborhood whiskey and cocktail bar that lets its bottles do the talking. The bourbon list runs deep, the cocktail menu stays short and confident, and food comes from rotating pop-ups rather than a kitchen. A James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurateur, which is an unusual nod for a place this deliberately unshowy.

  14. Jewel-toned marble tiles in the bathrooms set the tone for this boutique hotel on Carondelet: unapologetically luxe but somehow never stuffy. The rooms feel like sleeping in the home of a wealthy friend with excellent taste and a light touch, the kind of place that holds a Michelin Key without making you feel like you need to dress for it. New Orleans has no shortage of grand hotels; this one just makes grand feel easy.

  15. The red brick shell of a 19th-century orphanage in the Lower Garden District has been turned into a boutique hotel that wears history without being suffocated by it. Rooms lean into retro detail while staying genuinely comfortable, and the food program is serious, with a French-Vietnamese cafe and an Italian restaurant on site. The Paradise Lounge lobby bar opens to a patio, which in New Orleans is exactly the right idea. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  21. Thirteen rooms, each one a little different, wrapped in original fireplaces, forest greens, and Victorian wrought iron that feel genuinely of this neighborhood rather than borrowed from it. A small hotel in the Lower Garden District, the Blackbird leans into Southern Gothic without costuming itself. The pool bar runs craft cocktails and occasional live jazz, and the café handles food better than a room count of 13 has any business doing.

    The awards

  22. The house-made charcuterie case does most of the persuading at this beloved butcher and deli from Donald Link. Mortadella, head cheese, and a muffuletta stacked with house meats and olive salad run alongside a smoky Cubano and something called Le Pig Mac. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and the bread is baked in-house. Order more than you think you need; the muffuletta alone could feed two.

  23. The brick building on Poydras Street has been feeding and housing New Orleans since forever, and Copper Vine keeps that streak alive with eleven rooms above a wine-focused pub in the Central Business District. Ceilings soar, windows run floor to ceiling behind locally made Pavy drapes, and original artwork fills every corner. The Terrace Suite, carved from the old attic with exposed brick chimneys, is the one to request.

    The awards

  24. The Kimpton Hotel Fontenot sits at the edge of the Central Business District, which in New Orleans means you're a short walk from everything and nothing ever fully closes. It's a boutique hotel that took a forgettable chain property and dressed it in something the city would actually recognize as its own, from the moody interiors down to the bar. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels, and the location alone does a lot of work.

    The awards

  25. The name is shorthand for "let us feed you," which is a reasonable promise from an Indian restaurant that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. What started as pop-ups graduated into a proper brick-and-mortar in the Central Business District, where the tandoor turns out garlic-buttered naan and the dosa arrives golden, crisp, and served with sambar masala. The nonalcoholic Curry Nola-da, a pina colada riff with garam masala and curry leaves, signals that the kitchen has a sense of humor.

  26. The bar inside looks like a private library someone forgot to lock, and that's before happy hour. This boutique hotel sits in the Central Business District, between the Warehouse District and the French Quarter, in a former railroad headquarters whose exposed brick walls the designers wisely left alone. The rooms split between a 12-story tower and a smaller neighboring building, and historical photographs of New Orleans keep things grounded in the city rather than the algorithm.

  28. Some of the loft-style rooms here come with spiral staircases separating the sleeping area from a small upper sitting space, which is either charming or mildly inconvenient after a late night on Frenchmen Street. This boutique hotel on the edge of the Lower Garden District went through a full overhaul, with herringbone floors, marble bathrooms, and a saltwater pool with a swim-up bar doing most of the convincing. Magazine Street is a short walk away.

    The awards

  29. A converted warehouse in the Warehouse Arts District, back when that name still had something to prove. The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery sits on Tchoupitoulas Street a comfortable distance from the French Quarter chaos, which is either the point or the bonus depending on your tolerance for Bourbon Street. The building's bones are industrial; the sensibility is not. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

    The awards

  30. Richard Branson's hotel brand carries its personality the way a tour rider carries a no-brown-M&Ms clause: loudly, and with full commitment. This New Orleans outpost is a full-service hotel on Baronne Street where the decor leans maximalist, the common spaces are built for lingering, and the vibe skews young and sociable without feeling like a hostel that found a design budget. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  32. Fried chicken so deeply embedded in New Orleans lore that the Seaton family has been running this Southern lunch counter since before most food writers were born. The downtown dining room is sunny and spacious, a long way from the original Treme spot, but the bird hasn't changed. Order the gumbo with shrimp and blue crab first, then stay focused. First-timers who wander into the rest of the menu do so at their own risk.

  37. A cocktail bar off the lobby of the Loews Hotel, run by the Brennan family, the Commander's Palace dynasty that makes hospitality feel like a genetic condition. The signature Adelaide Swizzle comes with a "secret ingredient" the bartender will strongly imply is Falernum, plus a couple of theatrical pours he'll perform on request if you ask nicely and look like you mean it.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
