The Best Places in Lower East Side

  1. Rank 1. Bungalow

    Indian

Pink walls, carved bar panels, and Vikas Khanna working the room while guests line up down First Avenue for a walk-in spot set the tone at this buzzy East Village contemporary Indian restaurant. The kitchen pulls from all of India's regional traditions, and the yogurt kebab earned its own mention in the New York Times. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, and no one seems to leave before they're ready.

  2. Rank 1. Dirt Candy

    Vegetarian American

Amanda Cohen has been making vegetables the whole point since before that was a thing anyone said, and her Lower East Side tasting menu is where that conviction lands hardest. One menu, no substitutions, seasonal produce pushed through pickling, raw preparations, and desserts that can't quite decide if they're sweet. A Michelin star and a James Beard nomination confirm the kitchen's seriousness, even when the food is having fun.

  3. Anthony Mangieri runs the wood-burning oven himself, every service, at this airy Lower East Side pizza shop tiled in black and white and lined with canned tomatoes. The Neapolitan pies come out with fluffy edges and thin, papery crusts, topped with not much more than mozzarella di bufala and sweet tomato sauce, which is the whole point. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and ranked first in the country by 50 Top Pizza USA. Reservations are scarce, so arrive early and queue.

  4. Rank 4. Dhamaka

    Indian

Dhamaka means "explosion" in Hindi, and the kitchen takes that seriously, sending out smoky goat belly wrapped in cedar wood and mutton in clay pots swimming in dark chili oil with a whole roasted garlic bulb. This is a sit-down Indian restaurant in Essex Market that goes deep into rustic, regional dishes rarely spotted on menus here. The chef holds a James Beard Award. Tables are comically small, so bring people you like close.

  5. A tasting menu in a quietly understated Lower East Side room that reads far more modest than what comes out of the kitchen. The cooking is precise and composed, moving from a breakfast taco opener to scallop to a short rib and closing on goat milk ice cream. Nothing announces itself loudly, which is somehow the whole point. The service knows the menu cold. It holds a Michelin star.

  6. Marble-top bar, globe pendants, and coffee-brown tables give this Basque restaurant on the Lower East Side a midcentury feel that somehow never reads as costume. The room runs loud and convivial, the way a good tapas night should, and everything is built for sharing. The wine list leans deep into small Spanish organic and biodynamic producers, which is either very convenient or a very pleasant trap, depending on your evening.

  7. Rank 7. Kisa

    Korean

The one decision you make at this Korean diner on Allen Street is which protein you want. Everything else arrives whether you're ready or not: rotating banchan, crispy jeon, soy-cured shrimp, the works, with refills waved over without asking. The whole thing costs $36, lunch is $19, and a coffee from the machine by the door is on the house on the way out. It's modeled on Korea's taxi driver restaurants, which is exactly the energy.

  8. On some nights, the menu at this tiny Lower East Side wine bar runs almost entirely on toast, sometimes composed, sometimes a hunk of baguette left for you to figure out. The kitchen gestures toward France and Vietnam without committing to either, and the eggs mayo spiked with Maggi and trout roe has caused some embarrassing arguments about egg dishes. Stools, minimal lighting, a short pours list. Bon Appétit named it one of America's best new restaurants.

  9. Rank 8. Mắm

    Vietnamese

Plastic stools, plastic tables, and a fermented shrimp paste so funky it has its own gravitational pull, this is a Vietnamese restaurant on the Lower East Side that draws a crowd large enough to colonize the sidewalk and occasionally a neighboring storefront. The menu runs through stuffed snails, grilled intestines, and frog sausage with the tiny bones crushed in. The New York Times placed it 26th on their 100 Best Restaurants in New York City list.

  10. The smoked fish counter on Orchard Street has been an institution since forever, and Russ & Daughters is the appetizing shop New York trots out whenever it needs to prove a point. White-jacketed servers, a pristine deli case, egg creams, bagels, and Scottish salmon done multiple ways. The Michelin Bib Gourmand nod keeps it honest: the food is the whole point, and the regulars at the counter have known that for years.

  11. Rank 11. Bistrot Ha

    Vietnamese Bistro

A fish sauce martini is either the best idea you've heard all week or the reason you're leaving, which is a pretty good filter for this Vietnamese-French bistro on Eldridge. The menu swings between leeks vinaigrette with mussels and vol-au-vent loaded with chilis and seafood. Getting a table means arriving before doors open to join the waitlist, which the regulars already knew.

  12. Rank 11. Katz's Delicatessen

    Eastern European

The ticket system is real: you get one at the door, you guard it with your life, and the men at the counter are not interested in your confusion. Katz's is an old-school Lower East Side deli that has been feeding New York pastrami sandwiches longer than most buildings around it have been standing. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which feels about right for a place where nobody is pretending to be anything.

  13. Rank 14. Wildair

    Wine Bar

Magnums of natural wine lean toward empty glasses and conversations bounce off metallic high-tops in a low-ceilinged room that feels more like someone's dinner party than a restaurant. This Lower East Side wine bar runs on eclectic small plates and a list that skews biodynamic and organic, with a vibe that's deliberately, unapologetically Parisian. The New York Times gave it two stars, and Wine Enthusiast put it on its Forward 50 list.

  14. Rank 15. Comal

    Mexican

Wood tables, hand-painted tile, and just enough greenery to feel like a room that's been lived in: this contemporary Mexican small-plates spot on the Lower East Side earns a long, slow evening. The chef's menu is tight and seasonal, with careful attention to char and smoke, and the smoked half-chicken alone justifies a second visit. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, which tracks.

  15. Rank 16. Ivan Ramen

    Ramen Shop

Ivan Orkin, a New Yorker who built his reputation running ramen shops in Tokyo, brought the whole project back home to the Lower East Side. The ramen shop is compact and casual, counter seats facing the kitchen, with a menu that mixes Japanese technique and New York personality without making a big fuss about either. The tsukemen, where you dip thick fresh noodles into rich pork broth and season to taste, rewards the curious. Grub Street named it one of the city's best restaurants for kids.

  16. Rank 16. Potluck Club

    Cantonese

Hong Kong cinema posters line the walls and a glowing marquee floats above the chef's counter at this high-energy Cantonese American restaurant on Chrystie. The cooking is generous and unfussy, built on good ingredients without making a big speech about it. The XO fried rice and salt and pepper fried chicken pull regulars back repeatedly. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and priced like they mean it.

  17. Rank 21. Foul Witch

    Italian

  18. Rank 21. Ramen by Ra

    Japanese Noodle Shop

  19. Rank 24. 8282

    Modern Korean

Burrata with rice cakes and gochujang-marinated chicken is either a terrible idea or a very good one, and this Lower East Side gastropub has decided it's the latter. The menu is rooted in Korean flavors and then takes a hard left into stranger, more interesting territory, with everything designed to be shared. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this loose-limbed and fun.

  20. A crunchy Burmese pancake stuffed with vegetables and sesame seeds is the right way to start at this tiny East Village restaurant, where a family team runs the room with the kind of warmth that makes a ten-table spot feel like the whole point of the neighborhood. The menu runs longer than you'd expect from a place this small, covering soups, salads, curries, and noodles. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and easy to see why portions are built for sharing.

  21. Rank 24. Sami & Susu

    Mediterranean Wine Bar

The kitchen here runs without a proper gas stove, which makes the lamb ragu over house-made spätzle even more worth puzzling over. Sami & Susu is a narrow Mediterranean wine bar on Orchard Street, with a short seasonal menu that wanders the Middle East, a natural wine list, and a punky soundtrack. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the staff seem genuinely unbothered by how much you order.

  23. Named for a character in a Thai folktale about twelve sisters, this cozy Southern Thai restaurant on the Lower East Side opens with cocktails named for the rest of the family. The menu is compact and the spice levels are not. Southern Thai and Isan dishes carry real heat and personality, and the coconut ice cream served inside a coconut shell is the only sensible way to end things.

  29. A Lower East Side slice shop open until 3:30 a.m. on weekends, Jonny's turns out thin, bubble-blistered pies that hold up at any hour, which is not something you can say about most places keeping those hours. The chef taught himself the craft through obsessive pizza eating and some deep Reddit rabbit holes, and the fermented dough shows it. The New York Times named it one of the city's 22 best pizza spots.

  30. Rank 38. Kossar's

    Bakery

  31. Rank 38. Lai Rai

    Vietnamese Wine Bar

  32. The big tray chicken arrives in a wok the size of a hubcap, bird parts submerged in hot oil with enough Sichuan peppercorns to rearrange your face. This tiny Chinatown noodle cafe runs on Henan hand-stretched wheat noodles, and the brisket topping is the move. The room is small, the tables fill fast, and the bill stays low enough that you can afford to order the garlicky cucumbers without doing any math.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
