The best places to eat and do in Vila Nova de Gaia, according to the experts: Michelin Guide, Eater, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. The Yeatman Gastronomic Restaurant comes out on top.
More Less
Quinta do Noval and Vinha restaurante hold the next two places. The 50 shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide next.

Rank 1. The Yeatman Gastronomic Restaurant
Portuguese
The terrace faces Porto across the Douro, which is reason enough to book before you've looked at the menu. This is the two-Michelin-starred fine dining room inside the Yeatman hotel, where the chef runs a single tasting menu rooted in Portuguese tradition, pulling heavily from whatever arrived from the ocean that morning. The wine cellar is among the deeper rabbit holes in the country, and the service matches the room's ambitions without ever making you feel managed.

Rank 2. Vinha restaurante
Creative Portuguese
A Michelin-starred fine dining room inside a small manor on the Douro riverbank, Vinha runs a tasting menu called Identidade alongside à la carte, both shaped by Henrique Sá Pessoa and executed by the resident chef. The cooking is seasonal Portuguese with enough Asian and South American inflection to keep things interesting, and the sauces suggest someone in the kitchen takes them very personally. Smart dress, wine pairings, the whole occasion.

Taylor's has been aging port in these hillside cellars longer than most countries have had electricity, and a recent renovation turned the underground warren into an interactive museum tracing the full arc from grape to bottle. Films, old photographs, and exhibits fill the space before you arrive at the part everyone came for: a structured tasting of three ports, dry to tawny. It's a named spot on the World's 50 Best Vineyards list, which the view over the Douro does nothing to contradict.

Rank 6. 1638 Restaurant
Asturian
A tasting menu restaurant perched inside the Tivoli Kopke hotel, with terrace views across the Douro toward Porto. Spanish chef Nacho Manzano, known for Casa Marcial in Asturias, shaped the concept around two rivers, weaving the flavors of Asturian cooking into the ingredients of northern Portugal. Choose ten or twelve courses; the kitchen works in a register that's careful and precise without announcing itself too loudly.
