The best Japanese food in Munich, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and The 50 have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Tohru in der Schreiberei comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in München.

More Less

JAPATAPA TOSHIBAR and KOI hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

Japanese elsewhere

  1. Rank 1. Tohru in der Schreiberei

    Contemporary Japanese

Up a steep wooden staircase inside Munich's oldest town house, Tohru Nakamura's tasting-menu restaurant earns its three Michelin stars by doing something harder than fusion: making French and Japanese cooking feel like they were always the same thing. Koshihikari rice with regional trout caviar, a beurre blanc fermented with sake and elderflower. The kitchen tour that opens the meal sets the tone: nothing here is an afterthought.

  2. A counter-and-one-small-table Japanese restaurant tucked into a Schwabing side street near Münchner Freiheit, where the room is minimal and the sake list is not. The couple behind it have been fixtures in Munich's Japanese dining scene for a long time, and the cooking follows their lead: clean, unhurried, and rooted in something closer to Tokyo than to trend. The wine list pulls its weight too, which in a sake bar is a pleasant surprise.

  3. Rank 2. KOI

    Modern Japanese

Dark wood and warm light set a sleek, grown-up tone at this contemporary Japanese restaurant on Wittelsbacherplatz. The menu moves across sushi, robata-grilled meats and fish, and vegetable dishes with a modern edge. An upstairs bar adds a loungey layer for the evening, and the terrace fills fast when Munich actually delivers on summer.

  4. Rank 2. Matsuhisa Munich

    Peruvian Fusion Japanese

The rooftop terrace with its summer views over Munich is a nice bonus, but Nobu Matsuhisa's restaurant inside the Mandarin Oriental earns its keep year-round. It's a sleek, minimalist Japanese-Peruvian dining room where sushi and sashimi share the menu with black cod and Peruvian anticucho skewers, everything designed for sharing. The kind of place where the bill arrives in a leather folder and nobody flinches.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
