The Best Places in Lower Manhattan & Midtown

  1. Rank 1. Le Bernardin

    French Seafood

Eric Ripert's three-Michelin-star seafood temple in Midtown runs on French technique and a quiet confidence that doesn't need to announce itself. The menu moves from nearly raw to lightly cooked, and the room, all white tablecloths and soft jazz, fills nightly with people who dressed for the occasion. The thinly pounded yellowfin tuna over foie gras toast is the dish that gets talked about. The sommelier just won North America's Best Sommelier Award, which tracks.

  2. A curved chef's counter wraps around an open kitchen in this Hell's Kitchen fine dining spot, where the tasting menu moves through modern Chinese cooking with a Michelin star and a steady hand. The chef's touch lands somewhere between inventive and deeply familiar, so dishes arrive feeling both surprising and earned. The room is small, the ambition is not, and the AAA Four Diamond rating signals you're dressing up a little.

  3. Rank 3. Kochi

    Korean

The name means skewer in Korean, which tells you more about the format than "tasting menu" ever could. Chef Sungchul Shim runs an open kitchen where a young team sends out grilled bites meant to be eaten with your hands, one after another, playful and fast. The menu pulls from Korean roots and fine-dining instincts in equal measure. A Michelin star hangs over the whole thing, but the vibe stays loose.

  4. Rank 4. Don Antonio

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The Montanara Starita comes out of the kitchen lightly fried, sauced, and finished in the wood-fired oven, which is a more interesting origin story than most Midtown pizzas can claim. This Neapolitan pizza shop off Times Square is the New York branch of a Naples institution, run by a chef who grew up in the family craft. Ranked seventh on 50 Top Pizza USA, it draws a crowd that skips the tourist traps one block over and knows exactly what they came for.

  5. Rank 4. Mari

    Korean

The conceit here is a Korean tasting menu built around rolls, which sounds like a fusion experiment but plays out more like a revelation. Chef Sungchul Shim, who built his reputation just down the street at Kochi, runs a counter where chefs work in full view on every side, wrapping pristine fish and rice in seaweed at a deliberate pace. A Michelin star hangs over the whole thing, and the banchan tray that closes the meal earns its place.

  6. Rank 6. Chalong

    Traditional Southern Thai

Rattan light fixtures and dark wood set the mood at this Hell's Kitchen shared-plates spot, where the kitchen focuses on Southern Thai cooking. The menu runs through curries, noodle dishes, and seafood plates that lean traditional rather than trend-chasing. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod. Pre-theater crowds from nearby find it fits the timeline without feeling rushed.

  7. Rank 7. Gallaghers

    Steakhouse

The dry-aging locker runs along the front window so you see the USDA Prime slabs before you even open the door, which is a very Gallaghers way of setting expectations. This old-school Midtown steakhouse has been around forever, and the walls of jockey photos and the rolling dessert cart are not ironic. Hickory-grilled steaks, creamed spinach, a bar that hums, and a menu that still winks at Prohibition. Ranked among the World's Best Steak Restaurants.

  8. Rank 8. The View

    American

New York's only revolving restaurant sits on the 48th floor of the Times Square Marriott Marquis, spinning slowly enough that you don't notice until Midtown has quietly swapped sides. Danny Meyer's team gave it an Art Deco overhaul, and the chophouse menu punches well above the tourist-trap neighborhood. The New York Times gave it a star in 2025. Come for sunset and stay through a full rotation; the chocolate cake made the Times critic's year.

  10. A few tables and counter seats in the Theater District, which means you're eating Hyderabadi food elbow-to-elbow with strangers who are also very happy about it. The New York Times called out the gongura chicken biryani, and the Michelin Guide took note too. The menu pulls from Hyderabad with nods to the wider subcontinent, and the kitchen moves fast without feeling rushed.

  11. Black walls, scarlet booths, polished chrome, and a limestone fireplace that anchors the whole room: the Lambs Club is a Midtown steakhouse that knows exactly what it is and leans into it without apology. Dry-aged steaks with a full spread of sauces are the main event, and the pre-theater prix-fixe keeps the curtain-time crowd moving. Inside the Chatwal Hotel, steps from Broadway, it draws the kind of clientele that orders a second cocktail on purpose.

  12. The xiao long bao are made in-house, and you can watch through the glass as the pleating happens at speed. This is the New York outpost of the global dumpling chain, set in a large underground room near Times Square that runs loud and packed most hours of the day. The New York Times gave it a star in 2024, which did nothing to shorten the line. Expect a menu of soup dumplings in various fillings, a youthful crowd, and prices that won't require a moment of hesitation.

  14. Rank 16. Gui

    Korean Steakhouse

The aged steaks arrive finished with nothing but Maldon salt, which tells you something about the confidence level here. Gui is a Korean steakhouse in Times Square that leans into Japanese wagyu and USDA Prime cuts alongside raw bar and Asian-inflected sides like wagyu fried rice. The sleek room draws theater crowds but doesn't need them; the menu earns a visit on its own terms.

  15. Rank 17. HWARO

    Korean

A 22-seat counter tucked inside Gui Steakhouse, up an elevator and easy to walk past without knowing. Sungchul Shim runs a multicourse tasting menu where Korean flavors meet French technique, and the two Michelin stars suggest the kitchen takes that fusion seriously. Chefs work at the center of the room in full view, which keeps everyone facing the same direction for once. The white soy custard with Osetra caviar has developed a following of its own.

  16. The hand-pulled noodles here get stir-fried to order, and the soup dumplings draw a crowd that fills every table and then stands outside doing the math on the wait. This is a loud, steamy Chinese noodle house in Midtown that holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, so the lines are not going anywhere. The dumpling menu alone could occupy a dedicated researcher. Cash in your patience and go.

  17. A pizza shop inside a Times Square subway station, which sounds like a dare and turns out to be a genuinely good idea. Black-and-white checkered floors and 80s classics on the speakers give it a casual, slightly punk energy, and the thin-crust pies hold their own against the commuter chaos outside. Small plates cycle with the seasons before the pizza arrives. The Michelin Guide has taken note.

  20. Rank 22. Cuerno

    Mexican

A Mexican steakhouse on Sixth Avenue where the dish everyone's talking about costs twelve dollars. The Taco Richi, named a favorite by the New York Times critic, is an open-faced flour tortilla loaded with rib-eye ribbons and salsa verde pork cracklings, finished with a crust of seared cheese. The porterhouse is enormous and beside the point. Order one taco, get warned off a second, ignore the advice.

  21. The poached chicken arrives slippery and silky, its fat shocked into a jelly under the skin, but the fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth is what keeps Singaporeans texting each other excitedly. This is a no-frills chicken rice shop on Ninth Avenue doing a very specific thing very carefully, rooted in a family recipe that traces back to a legendary Singapore original. The New York Times named it among the 100 best restaurants in the city.

  23. Iced towers of oysters roll through the dining room at a pace that suggests the kitchen has a tide chart. This is a big, loud seafood restaurant a short walk from the Broadway theaters, so the crowd swings from pre-curtain nervous energy to post-curtain relief, and the staff somehow keep both waves moving. Clam chowder, lobster rolls, and fried calamari hold down the menu alongside the raw bar.

  32. Rank 38. NARO

    Korean

The name comes from South Korea's first carrier rocket, which tells you something about the ambitions in the room. Naro is a fine dining Korean restaurant in Rockefeller Center from the team behind Atomix, and where that room chases reinvention, this one returns to classics. The New York Times gave it three stars. Order the Dongji Martini, which made Esquire's list of the best martinis in the country, and let the evening unfold slowly.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
