The best French food in Porto, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and Eater have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Le Monument comes out on top.

More Less

Apego Restaurante and OMA Restaurante hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater next.

  1. Rank 1. Le Monument

    Modern French

A French chef reworking Portugal's regional classics, course by course, inside a grand palace hotel on the Aliados. Le Monument holds a Michelin star and runs as a tasting-menu restaurant, with a longer journey or a shorter stroll depending on your appetite. The kitchen's point of view is sharp: these are Portuguese flavors seen through an outsider who studied them closely enough to make locals pay attention.

  2. A small bistro on Rua de Santa Catarina where the chef threads her Luso-French roots through two tasting menus, one called Attachment and one called Detachment, which tells you something about the kitchen's sense of humor. The cooking leans heavily on vegetables from local producers, handled with enough technique that the vegetables don't seem to mind. The room is warm and a little eccentric, a bit removed from the tourist scrum.

  3. Rank 3. OMA Restaurante

    Contemporary French

The name is German for "grandmother," a nod to time the team spent abroad, and the menu keeps wandering from there: an Asian-inspired opener, a foie crème brûlée, then back to Portugal. It's a cozy contemporary restaurant in Porto, soft-lit and thoughtfully put together, where the kitchen leans on local produce and seasonal instincts rather than a fixed identity. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand.

  4. Rank 4. Cafeína

    Portuguese French

The azulejo facade has been around forever, and the dark wood and warm lighting inside make the bistro feel like it never needs to try hard. Cafeína sits in a converted villa in Foz do Douro, running a French-leaning bistronomy menu that also circles back to Portuguese classics with a lighter touch. The crepe flambée, prepared tableside, is the signature the regulars order without looking up.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
