French elsewhere

  1. Rank 1. Tchaikovsky

    Modern French

A glass roof, a chandelier, gilt frames on every wall, and a living green wall behind glass that keeps the room from feeling too buttoned-up. Tchaikovsky is a formal restaurant inside Hotel Telegraaf, in the middle of Tallinn's Old Town, serving refined cooking that layers classical French technique with Russian touches. The Siberian dumplings with horseradish beurre blanc are the kind of thing that makes you wonder why more places don't combine the two traditions.

  2. Rank 2. Tabac Brasserie & Bar

    French Cocktail Bar

  3. Red banquettes and mirrored walls give this French brasserie a classically Parisian feel, though the terrace sits right up against Tallinn's medieval city walls, which is a detail Paris cannot offer. The cooking leans Gallic but wanders into Italian and Asian territory without making a fuss about it. You choose between a concise à la carte or a six-course sharing menu, and the room is cosy enough that neither feels like a commitment you'll regret.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
