Cuisines

  1. Rank 355. Tati

    Argentine

  2. Rank 355. Versailles

    Patisserie

The carved wooden display cases and Art Nouveau bones give this grand Lisbon patisserie the feel of a Parisian café that decided to stay. It has been around forever, and the croquettes and pastry counter, heavy with cakes, meringues, and traditional Portuguese sweets, have outlasted most of what surrounds them. Lunch and dinner are on offer now, but most people come for something small on a plate and a reason to sit longer than they planned.

  3. Rank 355. Vida De Tasca

    Portuguese

The space hosted a classic tasca for over 40 years before the current chef, who put in real time visiting traditional Portuguese eateries before opening her own, took it over. This is an Alvalade neighborhood tavern running daily specials, cod fritters, croquettes, and affordable tabs with zero fuss. In a city where neo-tascas are everywhere and half of them know it, this one seems to have forgotten to be smug about it.

  4. Kitchen knives stabbed into the walls, Alice in Wonderland theatrics, and a staircase that appears to float set the stage at this cocktail bar in Bairro Alto. It sits inside Ljubomir Stanisic's restaurant group, but the vibe here is its own thing, Latin-leaning drinks in a Victorian gothic room that Hendrick's gin helped design, which tells you something about the energy. Wear something interesting; the room is clearly trying to.

  5. A stuffed deer keeps watch over the whitewashed sitting room, which tells you something about how seriously this lakeside farmhouse takes the Alentejo wilderness around it. José Avillez's restored estate on Lake Alqueva books as an exclusive hire for up to 20 guests, meals included, on 65 hectares where time genuinely seems to stop caring. The 50 Discovery named it among their picks.

  6. Around 200 bottled and canned beers line the shelves of this craft beer bar on a quiet Lisbon square near Príncipe Real. Pale wood and plywood give it an IKEA-meets-classroom vibe, which sounds worse than it is, especially once you're deep into something Belgian or Canadian you'd never find elsewhere. It's been around forever by craft beer bar standards, and the range, spanning Belgium, Sweden, the US, and beyond, still pulls serious drinkers across town.

  7. Rank 407. Cinco

    Cocktail Bar

  8. Rank 407. Double 9

    Cocktail Bar

  9. Rank 407. Park

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar on the fifth floor of a multi-storey car park, which sounds like a dare until you see the view. The Bairro Alto rooftops stretch out below a genuine garden, complete with trees, flowers, and a timber chalet structure that belongs on a ski slope and somehow belongs here too. Lisbon's hills make rooftop bars easy; finding one this absurd and easygoing is harder.

  10. Polished concrete floors and a back bar stacked with twenty-odd mezcals and scores of tequilas set the tone at this funky Lisbon taqueria, where drinking is a perfectly valid reason to show up. The Latin cocktail list is taken seriously, and regulars who never order food occupy the bar stools without apology. Casual, loud, and happily unpretentious, it's the kind of place that makes Lisbon's growing cocktail scene feel less like a trend.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
