The best barbecue in New York, according to the experts: Michelin Guide, Time Out, and AAA have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Hometown Bar-B-Que comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

More Less

R40 and Insa hold the next two places. Time Out shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The New York Times next.

  1. Wood smoke hits you on Van Brunt Street before the warehouse comes into view, which is a useful heads-up to adjust your plans for the rest of the day. This Red Hook BBQ shop runs counter service out of a sprawling industrial space with communal tables, where the brisket has the smoke ring to back up the reputation. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record, and the banana pudding tends to disappear fast.

  2. Rank 2. R40

    Argentine Barbecue

Smoke from the wood-fired grill drifts through the long dining room before you've even sat down. R40 is a proper Argentinian parilla in Long Island City, all exposed brick, sleek wood, and trailing greenery, with a patio out back when the weather cooperates. The menu is built for sharing: empanadas stuffed with filet mignon and raisins, skirt steak with chimichurri, and a combination platter of steak, ribs, chorizo, and sweetbreads for the committed.

  3. Rank 3. Insa

    Korean Barbecue

  4. A whole leg of jamón ibérico mounted on a carving stand anchors the room, which tells you most of what you need to know. This is Jose Andres's live-fire steak counter inside Mercado Little Spain at Hudson Yards, built around a wood-burning Basque-style grill. The steaks are the point, though the carnivorous atmosphere is half the meal. Somehow it also manages to be family-friendly without feeling like a concession, which in Manhattan is its own quiet trick.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
