The Best Caribbean Food in New York

The best Caribbean food in New York, according to the experts: The 50, Esquire, and Punch have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Kabawa comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

More Less

Tatiana and Lechonera La Piraña hold the next two places. The New York Times shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  1. Rank 1. Kabawa

    Caribbean

Paul Carmichael grew up in Barbados, and Kabawa is his argument that Caribbean cooking belongs in any room it wants. A prix-fixe fine dining restaurant on Extra Place, it seats you at a horseshoe counter in a dark green room with mosaic tilework and a playlist sourced partly from Carmichael's cousin back home. The New York Times named it the top restaurant in New York City, and the cocktail bar next door is his too, for nights when the goat patty feels like the right move.

  2. Rank 2. Tatiana

    Caribbean

Kwame Onwuachi named this pan-African Caribbean restaurant after his older sister, and it carries that kind of personal weight through every dish. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the dining room inside Lincoln Center, the kitchen is open, and the playlist runs hip-hop while oxtail arrives in a pot big enough to make a scene. It's fine dining without the hush. North America's 50 Best Restaurants lists it among its top 40.

  3. The buss up shut here is the size of a shirt and flaky as a biscuit, which the name, Trinidadian slang for "busted up shirt," promises and the kitchen delivers. This is a roti shop in South Ozone Park, cash and carry, no fuss. The New York Times put it on their 100 Best list, and the A train ride plus the half-mile walk from the station is apparently just part of the ritual now.

  4. Ali's is a counter-service roti shop on Fulton where the menu runs from conch to liver to curry goat, all folded into dhalpuri, the soft split-pea flatbread that does the heavy lifting. It closed for a renovation with almost no warning, which rattled the regulars, and it came back with picture windows full of pepper sauce and bush tea. Halal, cash only, so stop at the ATM before you start deliberating over kingfish.

  5. Rank 8. Mango Bay

    Caribbean

Floral wallpaper meets leather booths inside this Fort Greene brownstone, which sets the tone for the cooking: Afro-Caribbean tradition with a city sensibility. It's a sit-down dinner spot, fun but not casual, the kind of room that makes you want to linger over braised oxtail with a group of friends. The Michelin Guide has had its eye on it, and the crowd that fills the booths on a weekend night suggests they're not the only ones paying attention.

  6. Rank 8. Miss Lily's

    Caribbean

Formica tables, reggae on the speakers, and glam servers navigating the brightly colored booths: Miss Lily's is a lively Jamaican restaurant on Avenue A that makes the case for Caribbean food without any downtown hedging. Curried goat, jerk chicken, and oxtail stew are the anchors, and a well-stocked bar means the rum is never far behind. The Michelin Guide has it selected, which tracks for a room this committed to a good time.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
