The best Middle Eastern food in New York, according to the experts: The New York Times, the James Beard Awards, and the Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Cafe Zaffri comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

More Less

Yemenat and Tanoreen hold the next two places. The New York Times shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Michelin Guide next.

  2. Rank 1. Yemenat

    Middle Eastern

The word "post-authentic" painted on the window tells you something about the ambition here before you sit down. This Yemeni restaurant in Bay Ridge fills a brick-and-dark-wood room with families, neighborhood lifers, and northward refugees all tearing into great rounds of rashoosh and heaping plates of lamb. The New York Times put it at number 31 on its 100 best list, and Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand. Portions are sized for sharing whether you planned to or not.

  3. Rank 3. Tanoreen

    Middle Eastern

Pickled vegetables and za'atar-dusted flatbread land on the table before you've even decided anything, which is how Bay Ridge's favorite Middle Eastern restaurant sets its tone. The portions at this warm, family-run spot are engineered for sharing, and the mansaf, braised lamb over fluffy rice in creamy yogurt, is the kind of dish that makes you regret coming alone. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  4. Rank 4. Miss Ada

    Middle Eastern

A backyard garden in Fort Greene that fills up fast enough to make you wonder if everyone in Brooklyn got the same text. Miss Ada is a Middle Eastern restaurant built around sharing: hummus crowned with lamb shawarma, charred kofta skewers, market salads, and whipped ricotta with honey that blurs the line between course and dessert. The kitchen is reportedly tiny, though nothing on the table suggests it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and walk-ins can try their luck at the bar.

  6. Rank 6. Sawa

    Lebanese

Lines form outside before the doors open, which tells you something about this Middle Eastern restaurant in Park Slope. The menu is a deep dive into mezze and grilled meats, with house-made pita arriving hot enough to make the hummus and labneh situation feel urgent. The name means "together" in Arabic, and the room earns it: the energy runs warm and loud, the way a good dinner should.

  7. Rank 7. Dagon

    Middle Eastern

A corner restaurant on Broadway where the teal-washed dining room and floor-to-ceiling windows make the whole place feel like an exhale. The long counter fills up with regulars who clearly know their way around a Middle Eastern menu, and the off-center bar is quietly good for eating solo. Fresh-baked breads anchor the meal, and the kitchen's way with date syrup and tahini shows a chef who understands how sweetness and richness need each other.

  8. Rank 8. Ayat

  9. Rank 8. Laser Wolf

    Middle Eastern

The rooftop of the Hoxton Hotel in Williamsburg, with the Manhattan skyline doing its thing at sunset, is a solid place to eat skewers. This is Michael Solomonov's skewer house, and the format is pleasantly fixed: a spread of salatim to start, then meat and vegetable skewers over the coals, then soft-serve. Reservations are famously hard to land, which tells you something about how the room fills on a Tuesday.

  10. Rank 10. Ilili

    Lebanese

Freshly baked pita lands on the table almost before you've settled in, which is either a warning or a promise at this upmarket Lebanese restaurant in the Flatiron. The name means "tell me" in colloquial Arabic, and the format backs that up: sharing plates built around hot and cold meze, hummus in several moods, baba ghanoush, fattoush, falafel. Mains like seared lamb chops reward anyone who holds back.

  11. Rank 11. Levant

    Middle Eastern

The looming white-domed oven is the centerpiece of this tiny Astoria storefront, which has the brisk pace of a slice shop but the latticed oriel windows and warm arabesques of a Cairo street. It specializes in feteer, flaky layered pies pressed with ghee and folded around fillings, the basturma version packed with heavily garlicked air-dried beef. The New York Times named it among New York's 100 best restaurants. Steinway Street already has its Little Egypt; now it has a destination.

  14. Rank 13. Spice Brothers

    Middle Eastern

A shawarma stall on St. Marks Place so cheerfully cramped it barely counts as a room, run by two friends who once cooked for Daniel Boulud and apparently never got spices out of their system. The vertical spit is the anchor, but everything on the menu, labneh, falafel, harissa, gets the same obsessive seasoning treatment: cumin, cinnamon, dill, and a few turns you won't see coming. Named one of New York's best new restaurants of 2024 by the Times.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
