  1. Ski-in/ski-out from Empire Pass, with staff who will warm your boots and help you buckle them if you ask, which sets the tone for the whole operation. Montage Deer Valley is a full-scale mountain resort with craftsman-style rooms, a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, and year-round access to hiking, biking, and fly-fishing when the snow melts. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a Michelin Key.

    The awards

  2. Heated sidewalks run through the whole property, which tells you everything about the philosophy at this Forbes Five Star, Michelin Key lodge sitting mid-mountain at Deer Valley. Rooms come with jetted tubs; suites add stone fireplaces and gourmet kitchens. The ski valet handles your gear so you never have to think about it, and the Troll Hallen Lounge is exactly the kind of firelit room you want after a day on the slopes.

  3. Grass-roofed hillside suites, creekside cabins, and cliffside rooms with views over Alexander Canyon give this Auberge resort on 4,000 acres outside Park City three genuinely different ways to sleep in the same landscape. Stone, glass, and wood are arranged to keep the mountains and canyon doing the decorating. Horseback riding, fly fishing, and heliskiing fill the days. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a Michelin Key.

  4. A chandelier made of real antlers hangs in the living room beside one shaped like icicles, which tells you everything about the tone here. This 12-suite boutique hotel occupies a limestone schoolhouse in Old Town Park City, with reclaimed barn-wood floors, European antiques, and a fireplace that earns its keep. The chef cooks a complimentary breakfast and après-ski snacks, and a ski valet handles the gear. Park City Mountain is a short walk away.

  5. Rank 5. Handle

    Creative American

Tightly packed tables and a menu that shifts with the seasons set the tone at this creative American restaurant in Park City. The mood runs loud and convivial, the kind of place that works equally well for a group après-ski and a date night, which probably explains why it's almost always full. Comfort food gets a thoughtful rework here, and the chef landed a James Beard semifinalist nod. The Michelin Guide has it listed too.

  7. Ski-in/ski-out inside the gated Deer Crest community, this St. Regis resort sits on 12 slopeside acres above Park City with stone fireplaces and Juliette balconoes in every room. The split-level infinity pool appears to float over the snow-covered Wasatch Range, and the Yurt Village's heated stargazing domes handle private dining with a certain theatrical flair. Nightly champagne sabrage by the Fire Garden keeps things from getting too wholesome. A Forbes Four Star property.

  11. A stone exterior and courtyard fountain set the tone for this mid-mountain ski-in hotel in Silver Lake Village, a short run from Deer Valley's slopes. The look is French mountain chalet; the amenities are firmly American, including a heated pool, two hot tubs, a spa, and suites with fireplaces, jetted tubs, and kitchens. The Forbes Four Star property houses an Italian restaurant and a lounge with live music for après-ski that skips the pretense.

  12. A stone fireplace anchors the multi-story lobby here, with leather armchairs and oriental rugs doing their best to convince you that roughing it and a Forbes Four Star rating can coexist. This lodge-style ski resort sits slope-side in the Wasatch Mountains, gondola-connected to the runs in winter and surrounded by hiking and mountain biking trails come summer. Every guest room has its own working fireplace, so the apres-ski atmosphere follows you upstairs.

  21. Rank 22. Matilda

    Pizzeria

Sourdough pies out of a wood-fired oven anchor the menu at this laid-back neighborhood pizza spot, where tall ceilings and a light wood and green palette make it feel like someone actually thought about the room. Park City locals fill it nightly, and the open kitchen is worth watching. Sticky date pudding with salted caramel closes things out on a note that has nothing to do with pizza and no one seems to mind.

  30. High West's own distillery runs this tasting-menu dinner inside a small cottage on Park Ave., where a company ambassador pairs each course with a whiskey pour and everyone eats in lockstep. You start on the patio with sips and snacks, then move inside for the full meal. The kitchen leans toward game and local fish, and the whiskey is, naturally, the whole point of being here.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
