  2. Tangerine doors set into a 23-foot breeze block wall are your first clue that this Palm Springs resort operates on its own frequency. Jonathan Adler designed the interiors, so a suit of armor guards the lobby, groovy carpeting climbs the stairs, and eccentric glamour is the unifying theory. Lanai rooms, a pétanque court, and a hammock by the pool suggest a schedule built around doing very little with great commitment.

  3. Rank 4. Alice B.

    Californian Mediterranean

Candlelit stone tables and cushioned banquettes set the mood at this modern California-Mediterranean restaurant inside Palm Springs' Living Out community. Sue Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken run the kitchen, turning out wood-roasted seafood and hand-rolled pastas with the kind of ease that makes it look unfair. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the Los Angeles Times put it on their 101 best in California list for 2025.

  4. Rank 4. Le Vallauris

    Californian French

  5. Rank 6. Bar Cecil

    American

Walls hung with Calder and Warhol set the tone at this American restaurant and bar, where the design hovers somewhere between garish and glamorous and reservations disappear weeks out. If you didn't plan ahead, arrive before doors open and angle for a bar seat. A precisely made martini is the move, and the burger has earned its reputation as a signature. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and the crowd dresses accordingly.

  6. The surprise here is that "farm-to-table in the desert" is less a marketing line than a geography lesson: the Coachella Valley is one of the country's most productive agricultural corridors, and this modernist New American restaurant sources accordingly, down to a dedicated garden in Rancho Mirage. The space itself is a polished-concrete interior tucked inside an old Spanish-style building, with a mist-cooled courtyard out back. The bar program runs to house-made ginger beer.

  8. The room tiers at this 28-room boutique hotel in downtown Palm Springs are simply Good, Better, and Best, which either signals confidence or a refreshing allergy to hospitality jargon. All rooms come with original artwork and Waterworks bath hardware; Better adds a wet bar, and Best earns mountain views with a private balcony. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. Midcentury Palm Springs, so pack accordingly: linen and sunscreen.

  10. While the rest of Palm Springs does mid-century California, this 11-room adults-only hideaway is cosplaying 1960s St. Tropez, and somehow it works. Sunny colors, bohemian interiors, a pool built for lingering, and an orchard that makes you forget the desert is right there. Breakfast is included; dinner you'll find nearby with a little help from the staff. A Michelin Key property.

  11. Bathtubs carved from old horse troughs are the giveaway that Sparrows Lodge has a point of view. This Michelin Key boutique hotel wears its ranch bones lightly: recycled mid-century wood, a red barn that opens for dinner and drinks at night, and a pool ringed by guests in retro swimwear who look like they read actual books. Horseshoes, wooden tennis rackets, private campfires. Summer camp, basically, for people with good taste in cocktails.

  12. Rank 14. Cheeky's

    American

The bacon flight, five strips in rotating flavors, is reason enough to brave the wait at this daytime-only brunch spot in Palm Springs. Text-ahead seating lands you on a covered patio full of sunglasses and no particular hurry. The weekly-changing menu leans on local produce and runs from breakfast quesadillas to proper coffee cake, with housemade pastries at the counter for anyone too impatient to sit down.

  16. The Spanish Colonial architecture and a pool that looks like it was designed for someone to be discovered next to set the scene at Colony Palms, a boutique hotel with a past that includes an alleged mobster founder and a devoted Hollywood following. The place has been through a few names and a full redesign, but the glamour reads as deliberate rather than accidental, which is probably the point.

  18. The origin story involves black flowers bought from a French roadside cart, and the whole hotel has leaned into it ever since. Moody botanical wallpaper by Ellie Cashman lines the interiors, while giant murals spill into a poolside courtyard with fire pits and Adirondack chairs. Casitas and suites have terracotta floors and midcentury furnishings. The speakeasy-style rosé bar keeps things from taking themselves too seriously.

  20. Mid-century Modern bones meet the kind of boutique hotel philosophy that decided exclusivity was overrated. The Rowan is a Kimpton property, which means the design is sharp without being cold and the vibe tilts toward grown-up fun rather than hushed reverence, which suits Palm Springs and its cheerful, unapologetic hedonism perfectly. A rooftop pool with mountain views helps make the case for staying in rather than going anywhere.

  22. Named for a French pop song from the sixties, this adults-only boutique hotel in the Warm Sands neighborhood runs small, quiet, and easier on a travel budget than most of what Palm Springs has to offer. Twenty-seven rooms, a pool, a fire pit, and drinks in the courtyard cover the essentials. There's no restaurant on site, so dinner means a short drive into town, which most guests seem to consider a fine trade.

  25. That sharply angled canopy over the entrance looks lifted straight from a roadside motel, which is more or less the point. The Royal Sun is a boutique hotel on the edge of downtown Palm Springs where mid-century modern is taken seriously rather than gestured at: boxy stone facade, tangerine trim, outdoor corridors, and inside, a bar and restaurant with checkered floors and curved booths that feel genuinely period, not costume.

  26. Postwar Hollywood types used to slip away to this adults-only boutique hotel in a quieter pocket of Palm Springs, and the updated version still runs on the same premise: discretion, a certain elegance, and very little fuss. The rooms have been brought up to current luxury-boutique standards without the place losing its original character, and the bar alone gives people a reason to linger longer than they planned.

  27. Rank 29. 4 Saints

    Southern

On the seventh floor of the Rowan Hotel, this fine dining room has the highest rooftop in downtown Palm Springs, with the San Jacinto Mountains spread out in every direction. The chef riffs on Southern cooking, grilled steaks and seasonal produce with a warm-weather looseness that fits the setting. Date-infused Old Fashioneds arrive while the light goes gold. Prices float as high as the altitude, but so does everything worth watching in Palm Springs.

  28. Rank 29. Boozehounds

    Cocktail Bar

The patio has its own doggy door, and the dogs get their own menu. Boozehounds is a cocktail bar in Palm Springs where the drinks list runs deep and the bar food swings wider than you'd expect, from truffled parmesan fries to tuna tataki to Korean rice cakes. The indoor room is humans only, sleek and air-conditioned, while the enclosed patio handles the four-legged clientele with its own bowls and treats.

  29. Rank 29. Tac/Quila

    Modern Mexican

Hacienda arches and in-house tortillas set the tone at this modern Mexican restaurant in downtown Palm Springs, where business lunchers and sunburned tourists in cover-ups share the room without anyone noticing the difference. The menu runs from street tacos to lobster, and the quesabirria short rib tacos come with a side of consommé for dipping. The tequila list is long enough that the margarita flights feel almost restrained.

  30. Moroccan-style tilework and wallpaper set the mood at this hotel restaurant inside Colony Palms, where the turquoise pool has been catching afternoon light since Clark Gable was a regular. The menu keeps things loose, running from snacks and hummus to grilled pork chop and chicken pot pie. Dress is poolside-adjacent, the vibe is old Palm Springs glamour, and someone at the next table may have just driven up from L.A. for the weekend.

  32. The mahogany L-shaped bar gives away what Paul Bar/Food is before you've ordered anything: a serious cocktail bar that happens to feed you well. It sits next to a strip-mall dispensary, which keeps the tourists guessing and the locals comfortable. Classic drinks get quiet tweaks, a frozen Sidecar here, a black Manhattan there, alongside a short food menu of wings, burgers, and steak frites that nobody's complaining about.

  37. Rank 40. Peninsula Pastries

  38. Rank 40. The Heyday

    Burger Joint

The red leather booths survived the renovation intact, and the 1970s diner vibe is so well-preserved you half-expect a harvest-gold appliance somewhere in the back. The Heyday is a casual burger shop on North Palm Canyon serving smash burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, and wings alongside strong classic cocktails and a retro playlist that earns its keep. The kind of place that makes Palm Springs feel less like a wellness retreat and more like a road trip stop.

  40. Rank 40. Townie Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

The kitchen crew is up at 3 a.m. so you don't have to be, which is the kind of arrangement that makes a bagel shop worth its reputation. Townie is a no-frills NY-style operation in Palm Springs turning out hand-rolled bagels, including a sourdough version and a daily gluten-free batch, plus black-and-white cookies and brownies. Call ahead, because the line in the desert sun is a real thing and a hat will only get you so far.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
