A modernist resort on a coastal bluff between San Diego and Orange County, Alila Marea sits just high enough above the Pacific that even the pool feels like a vantage point. Rooms run toward calm minimalism with floor-to-ceiling windows, and not every one faces the water directly, though the tradeoff is rarely painful. The spa, a poolside bar, and VAGA Restaurant round out the property for guests who'd rather not leave.

A massive retro mural reading "Welcome to Leucadia" covers the outside wall, and honestly that sets the tone. Coffee Coffee is a casual coffee shop right on the 101, all big windows and easy light, with seating inside and out. The menu runs the usual espresso route plus an extensive tea list and light breakfast and lunch bites. Surf-town regulars and the unhurried crowd from nearby Bing Surfboards both seem equally at home here.

Four rooms, each named for a classical element, in a rebuilt 1958 modernist house a short drive up the coast from San Diego. Twelve Senses is a tiny, philosophy-forward retreat whose design draws on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, which is either exactly your thing or something you'll spend the weekend quietly Googling. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels, which fits the energy of a place that clearly has a point of view.

The roll-up garage door, the metal finishes, and a few tables inside and out keep things tight and unhurried. The owner sources beans across Latin America and Africa and often pulls the shots himself. Old Woodys drifting past on the 101 supply the rest of the ambiance for free.

Inside, polished concrete meets warm wood and pops of pink. The coffee program leans into mocktail-style signature drinks alongside seriously sourced Colombian and Ethiopian beans. Baristas will walk you through either side of the menu without making you feel like a philistine for asking.
