The best Mexican food in Vancouver, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, Vancouver Magazine, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Chupito comes out on top.

More Less

Ophelía and El Gato Gab Gab hold the next two places. Vancouver Magazine shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater next.

  1. A covered outdoor taqueria on Yukon Street that feels like someone smuggled a great Mexico City back-alley spot into a Vancouver residential neighbourhood. The Mexican cooking leans a little ambitious, and the cocktail program punches well above the taqueria average. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place regulars quietly hope you won't find out about.

  2. Stunning murals and colorful carvings make Ophelía one of the more visually lively rooms in Olympic Village. It's a modern Mexican restaurant where the chef cooks pan-regional dishes rooted in family tradition, and the kitchen's Oaxacan mole blanco has a way of making a strong case for itself. Book ahead, because the place is always packed, and the outdoor patio fills fast on any decent evening.

  3. The hand-chopped-to-order carnitas are what people talk about, and the tortillas are made in-house, which matters more than it sounds. Chancho is a taco spot on Commercial Drive, bright and informal, with the kind of line that tells you everything before you've read a menu. The Vancouver Magazine judges called the carnitas near perfect two years running, which is a bold thing to say about a taco joint, but the room full of regulars suggests nobody is arguing.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
