The best Mexican food in Los Angeles, according to the experts: James Beard Awards, Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Holbox comes out on top.

More Less

Komal and Evil Cooks hold the next two places. Los Angeles Times shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide next.

Eat, change section
  1. Rank 1. Holbox

    Mexican

Named for a Caribbean island off the Yucatán coast, this Michelin-starred coastal Mexican seafood counter sits inside Mercado La Paloma in South Central, sharing the space with six other vendors and no liquor license, so lemonade it is. The chef grew up spearing fish on that same peninsula, and the ceviches, aguachiles, and grilled lobster on heirloom corn tortillas taste like it. North America's 50 Best lists it at number 26.

  2. Rank 2. Komal

    Mexican

Fátima Juárez nixtamalizes heirloom Mexican corn every morning to produce blue, red, and yellow masa, which explains why the tortillas at this molino inside Mercado La Paloma have their own devoted following. The short menu runs through tacos, tlacoyos, and chucitos, but the molotes de plátano, plantain dumplings fried crisp around fresh quesillo and floated in mole negro, landed on the New York Times list of best dishes in the country. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  3. Rank 3. Gusto Bread

    Artisanal Mexican

A Long Beach panadería where the pastries draw on Mexican and Indigenous baking traditions, Gusto Bread makes a kouign-amann with nixtamalized corn folded into sourdough dough, which tells you everything about how the team approaches the classics. Conchas, multigrain loaves, and seasonal pastries round out the case. A James Beard nominee for Outstanding Bakery, it draws visitors from well outside the neighborhood who planned their morning around it.

  4. Rank 5. Damian

    Mexican

A repurposed warehouse in the Arts District with polished concrete, exposed brick, and enough trailing greenery that you half-forget you're surrounded by industrial bones. Damian is a full-service Mexican restaurant where the kitchen takes the cuisine seriously without making you feel lectured about it. The terrace fills fast, the cocktails are sharp, and the fish taco quietly outclasses everything you thought you knew about fish tacos.

  5. Rank 6. CHAAK Kitchen

    Modern Yucatecan

Cochinita pibil marinated in citrus and achiote, pulled and served with fresh tortillas, is the kind of dish that makes Yucatán cooking click. This modern Mexican restaurant in Tustin focuses on the smoke- and spice-driven food of the peninsula, and it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Mezcal cocktails come customized with tamarind and mole bitters, and the charred habanero salsa arrives whether you ordered it or not, which is the right call.

  6. The line stretching down 8th Street is basically the sign out front at this downtown taqueria. Sonoratown runs a tight counter-order operation: tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, all built on house-made flour tortillas in the Sonoran style. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which explains why finding a seat, indoors or out, is mostly a matter of luck and timing.

  7. Rank 7. Taqueria Frontera

    Baja Taqueria

The tortilla gets toasted in the fat dripping from the al pastor spit, which tells you most of what you need to know. This is a Tijuana-style taqueria doing the kind of taco that Tejal Rao named one of the best dishes she ate across the country in 2025, at $3.75 a pop. Two salsas, one creamy and calm and one aggressively hot, swirl together differently in every bite. Cash, counter, no fuss.

  8. Sweet smoke from the grill drifts across a Highland Park parking lot, and the line at this taqueria doesn't move an inch. The queso taco, built on a blue corn masa tortilla and finished with a melted skirt of Monterey Jack, is the reason most people are here. The homemade salsas run from bright to ferociously spicy. A few picnic tables outside, a Bib Gourmand on the record, and tacos that arrive colorful and structurally ambitious.

  9. The website is ilovemole.com, which tells you everything about what this Oaxacan restaurant is here to do. The orange façade announces it from blocks away, and inside, the grill station fills the room with the smell of blistering peppers before you've even sat down. The moles, particularly the negro and rojo, are the reason regulars keep coming back. Complimentary chips arrive already drizzled with mole coloradito, so you're committed before you've ordered.

  10. Chef Rocio Camacho has built a mole-focused Mexican restaurant in Bell Gardens around a question most kitchens dodge: why stop at one? The room is spare and unpretentious, the moles are not, running from an ink-dark Oaxaqueño to a spicy-sweet manchamanteles to a bright verde, each layered enough to hold your attention from first bite to last. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a James Beard semifinalist.

  11. Coca-Cola glazed pork belly and Doritos-dusted chilaquiles set the tone at this taco-forward Mexican restaurant in Cerritos, where the chef brings a fine-dining background to handmade tortillas and spicy salsas. The menu leans into LA's Mexican-American hybrid instincts, with truffle accents sitting comfortably beside beer-battered cod. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on the LA Times taco list.

  12. The chicharron, crispy pork belly in garlic mojo, is the dish that people apparently plan their week around. This is a Mexican restaurant from chef Ray Garcia, running a compact menu of bold, nostalgic cooking that skews contemporary without making a show of it. The room fills fast, so reservations are not optional. Start with the aguachile negro and work your way forward; skipping anything tends to feel like a mistake in hindsight.

  13. Handmade flour tortillas and hand-pressed masa are the foundation at this Mexican gastropub in downtown Santa Ana, where a post-pandemic reset trimmed the menu down to tacos, quekas, and churros and made each one count. The Bib Gourmand reflects that focus. Grilled tomato and dried chili salsa ties the tacos together; habanero salsa does the same for the quekas. Happy hour makes running the whole short list an easy call.

  14. Rank 13. Macheen

    Mexican

Housemade corn tortillas are the baseline here, warm and soft, and everything else is a riff on the form that lands somewhere between street food and genuine curiosity. Macheen is a taqueria operating as a pop-up, rotating through Boyle Heights and Smorgasburg, with a menu that might pile daikon pickles and grilled rib-eye onto one taco and sweet smoky beets al pastor onto another. The New York Times put it on their 25 best L.A. restaurants list, which tracks.

  15. Corrugated metal walls, open air, and a menu that fits on one page: this rustic Mexican spot in Lincoln Heights runs on stewed meats and soulful broths. The carne en su jugo, a tomatillo and bacon beef soup with pinto beans, is what keeps the regulars coming back, though the birria en consommé gives it a run. Tortillas are made in-house. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the small staff acts like they already know you.

  16. Rank 18. Mariscos Jalisco

    Seafood Mexican

The signature fried shrimp taco has a shell that shatters like tempura, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Jalisco-style mariscos shop in Pomona. The menu is short: tostadas loaded with lime-forward ceviche and that taco, nothing more. Raul Ortega started with a truck in Boyle Heights and the city never really let go. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. First-timers order one; everyone else orders a plate.

  23. Rank 26. Coni'Seafood

    Nayarit-style Mexican

Shrimp arrive head-on, sautéed in a red sauce of roasted chilies and beer, and that one dish tells you everything about this Nayarit-style seafood spot in Inglewood. The enclosed back patio is where locals settle in for whole fried fish, heaping ceviches, and tacos that landed on the Los Angeles Times' best taco list. The Michelin Guide has noticed too. Order broadly and let the kitchen, a family operation through and through, do the talking.

  24. Rank 26. Guisados

    Mexican

The chalkboard changes daily, which is your first clue that this family-run taco and braises shop on a busy Boyle Heights corner takes its cooking seriously. The room is spare and airy, and the tacos are not, built around long-braised meats like cochinita pibil and steak picado that drip sauce the moment you pick one up. Bring napkins, or several.

  25. Rank 28. Sonoratown

    Sonoran Taqueria

Flour tortillas, not corn, are the whole argument here. This Sonoran taqueria brings the traditions of San Luis Río Colorado to Los Angeles, where the lard-rich, hand-made tortillas get charred on a griddle and wrapped around mesquite-grilled asada or slow-cooked cabeza. The caramelo and the oversized burritos draw regulars who already know their order before they reach the counter. A casual, counter-service spot where eating light is genuinely hard.

  29. Part cafe, part specialty grocery, Alta Baja Market anchors downtown Santa Ana with one of the largest selections of Mexican wines you'll find under one roof, alongside heirloom corn, beans, and grains worth browsing. The breakfast and lunch menu leans New Mexican and border-crossing, with green chile eggchiladas built on La Princesita tortillas. Order a michelada and you'll understand why people linger here longer than they planned.

  31. Rank 34. Tacos Royale

    Hermosillo Taqueria

A charcoal-fired street cart in a Silver Lake parking lot, doing Hermosillo-style asada the way it's meant to be done: beef piled onto tallow-rich tortillas with cabbage, guacamole, and a lineup of salsas that demands some decision-making. The team behind it brings serious pedigree, Atla among the past stops. The menu is short on purpose, asada tacos, burritos, and the fixings, and the line makes the case before you've ordered.

  32. The front window is how you order, the aguas frescas are poured cold, and the adobada is quietly the whole argument for coming. This Echo Park taqueria is a branch of a Tijuana original, serving the usual lineup of proteins as tacos, mulitas, burritos, and vampiros. It landed on Eater's hottest new restaurants list, which tracks, given how fast the neighborhood found it. First-timers are pointed toward the adobada, and regulars tend to agree.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
