The best places to eat in Sherman Oaks, according to the experts: James Beard Awards, The Infatuation, and Wine Enthusiast have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Anajak Thai comes out on top.
More Less
Borekas Sephardic Pastries and Sushi Note hold the next two places. Los Angeles Times shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Food & Wine next.

Rank 1. Anajak Thai
Thai
Thai Taco Tuesdays draw lines around the block at this family-run Sherman Oaks restaurant, where a second-generation chef holds a James Beard Award and runs a monthly omakase that books out before most people know it's open. The rest of the week it's classic Thai with a wine list that gets written about on its own terms. Warm, buzzy, and very Los Angeles in the best sense, which is to say it's completely unpretentious about being excellent.

Rank 4. Sushi Note
Sushi
Soft fabrics and moody walls hang alongside framed letters and art that feels more gallery than sushi counter, which sets the tone nicely for what follows. This Sherman Oaks omakase spot runs half or full tasting menus, plus à la carte, with every piece of nigiri and sashimi cut to order. The wine list gets the same care as the fish, which is either charming or slightly unhinged depending on your orthodoxy about sake.

Rank 5. Mistral
Bistro
Mistral has been a French institution on Ventura Boulevard for what feels like forever, and a new team has stepped in after the founding owner retired, refreshing the room and the menu without abandoning the bistro bones. French onion soup arrives crowned with a Comté grilled cheese, and four versions of steak frites suggests a kitchen that takes the assignment seriously. A sommelier handles the wine list, and a full cocktail menu is there if you need it.
