  2. A grab-and-go sushi and sashimi shop where the fish is sliced to order straight from the chiller, Sashimiya is the solo project of Taka Omi, who spent years behind the counter at the Fairmont Pacific Rim's RawBar. There are no seats, which the waterfront a short walk away quietly solves. Party trays, bentos, and platters are the move, and the shop stocks Japanese grocery finds alongside the fish for good measure.

  3. Rank 189. Straight Brooklyn Pizza

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The thin, crispy crust is the whole argument here, and the toppings are generous enough that you won't feel nickeled. Straight Brooklyn Pizza is a New York-style slice shop with several locations around the city, spinning off from the team behind Via Tevere. Order two slices and a free house-made dip comes with them, the pesto being the one to get. Good to know if you're pre-gaming Rogers Arena or BC Place and need something fast that doesn't feel like a compromise.

  4. Finding the 515 Bar involves navigating through a youth hostel and a sports bar, which is either an adventure or a nuisance depending on how your night is going. Once inside, this cocktail bar settles into a European mood, with an indie retro playlist and cheese and charcuterie from Les Amis du Fromage anchoring the room. The cocktails run strong, the bathroom quest grows more interesting after a few, and a line forms for happy hour on Friday and Saturday.

  5. A blue pond-glazed crème brûlée with a chocolate rubber duck floating in it tells you everything about this Fairview cafe. The pastry team drops new creations every few weeks, leaning hard into theatrical presentation, and the coffee keeps pace with seasonally inspired latte art. The kind of place where the dessert case stops people mid-stride, and the igloo cakes shaped after Nanaimo bars are not even the weirdest thing on offer.

  6. Marble floors, a signature Indian jasmine scent piped through the air, and live music three times a day set the tone for this hotel lobby bar inside one of Vancouver's glossier addresses. It's the kind of place where the city's famously casual dressing meets conspicuous chandeliers and nobody seems bothered by the contradiction. On weekend nights after ten, the potted plants reportedly double as a dance floor, so plan accordingly if you came to drink seriously.

  7. Rank 206. Nook

    Italian

  8. Rank 206. Nook

    Italian

The rigatoni boscaiola has a following serious enough that regulars debate whether to bother with the specials. They should bother with the specials. This casual Italian spot on Denman runs multiple locations around Vancouver, each with its own daily menu alongside the pasta and pizza standards, which is a harder trick to pull off than it sounds. Vancouver Magazine has given it gold for Best Chain three years running.

  13. Rank 206. Pourhouse

    Cocktail Bar

A Douglas Fir bar that's been around forever runs nearly wall to wall, and the waistcoated bartenders working it keep classic cocktails moving at a clip that suggests they've never had a slow Tuesday. This Gastown cocktail bar pulls off a London pub atmosphere in a city that usually splits the difference between restaurant and lounge, with leather booths and deep couches upstairs for the chattier end of the crowd.

  15. Rank 206. The Diamond

    Cocktail Bar

  16. Rank 206. West

    Wine Bar

Ten stools, two bartenders, and a wine wall that takes itself seriously without making you feel like you should too. West is a wine bar on Granville that embodies what Vancouver does well: high-touch without the starch. The bartenders have been here long enough to know what you want before you do, and afternoons are unhurried, though weekend evenings pack the room two deep with the pre-dinner crowd treating it as a destination in itself.

  17. Rank 206. Zoomak

    Modern Korean

Zoomak calls itself a modern Korean tavern, which undersells the kitchen by a comfortable margin. The housemade kimchi alone earns its keep, showing up alongside crispy pork bossam and turning up again warm over steamed tofu. Korean fried chicken and pork belly fill out a menu where picking a favorite feels like a trap. The room is loose and friendly, the prices keep pace with the vibe, and nobody's making you feel bad for ordering another round.

  18. Rank 218. Baby Dhal Roti

    Homestyle Caribbean

  19. Rank 218. Chancho

    Mexican

The hand-chopped-to-order carnitas are what people talk about, and the tortillas are made in-house, which matters more than it sounds. Chancho is a taco spot on Commercial Drive, bright and informal, with the kind of line that tells you everything before you've read a menu. The Vancouver Magazine judges called the carnitas near perfect two years running, which is a bold thing to say about a taco joint, but the room full of regulars suggests nobody is arguing.

  39. Rank 260. Clough Club

    Cocktail Bar

The curvy white marble bar anchors one corner of a room that looks like it's been pleasantly roughed up by a century of good times, tiled floor and all. Clough Club is a cocktail bar with genuinely progressive drinks, which sets it apart from the group's other spots. Upholstered benches and club chairs line the walls, a tall marble table invites standing rounds in the middle, and the whole thing reads less like a design statement than a place people actually like drinking in.

  42. The dough takes three days to make, which partly explains the line of rain-soaked Vancouverites camped under the East Broadway awning. This is a casual New York pizza joint doing three styles: classic New York, Sicilian, and Detroit. The thick, crispy-edged Detroit pies in particular have developed a following that shows no signs of thinning out, regardless of weather, which in Vancouver is really saying something.

  43. Rank 265. Buckstop

    Barbecue

Antler chandeliers and flickering candles light a narrow, 32-seat bar in the West End that smells like barbecue and stays open until 2am with a full kitchen running the whole time, which is rarer in Vancouver than it should be. Rock and blues play loud enough that you lean in to talk, and at the chatty bar you'll have made friends before the second round arrives. A genuinely un-Vancouver-ish room, in the warmest possible sense.

  44. Rank 265. El Caminos

    Mexican Cocktail Bar

House margaritas come in mugs here, which tells you most of what you need to know about El Caminos. This Mexican cocktail bar on Main Street does the Pacific Northwest version of a dive, all shabby-chic surfaces and pan-Latin classics poured without ceremony. Locals pack it out on weekends and Margarita Mondays draw a crowd that tends to spill onto the sidewalk, so come early or come patient.

  45. Rank 265. The Granville Room

    Cocktail Bar

Brick walls, Edison bulbs, and wooden shelves set the cocktail-bar mood, then the flat-screens and thumping house music cheerfully undermine the whole thing. The Granville Room sits on Vancouver's neon-lit strip and leans into it: twenty- and thirty-somethings come here to drink with intention, share some bar food, and not overthink it. Call it a party pub wearing a speakeasy costume, and you've got it about right.

  46. Rank 265. The Refinery

    Cocktail Bar

A flight of stairs off Granville Street leads to a low-lit cocktail lounge where nearly everyone is sitting down, cocktail in hand, which sets the mood right away. The team makes their own syrups, vermouths, and preserves for drinks built around local ingredients, and a charcuterie-heavy menu keeps people at the table long enough to order another round. Communal tables and upbeat music give it a party-at-a-friend's-place feel.

  47. A semi-circular tiki bar tucked inside the Waldorf Hotel's entertainment complex on East Hastings. The room is built around a big, curved bar with a red top and a mirror wall behind it that bounces the whole scene back at you. Tiered tables ring the outer edge, leaving floor space for when things get crowded. It shares the building with restaurants and live music venues, so some nights come with a cover; earlier in the week it runs as its own thing, free to wander into.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
