  14. Dusky leaf monkeys and monitor lizards wander the tropical gardens here without asking anyone's permission, which sets the tone nicely. This low-rise Anantara resort sits on the South China Sea at Desaru Coast, with rooms and villas looking out over lagoon and ocean. The multi-bedroom Residences come with a private chef, butler, and infinity pool. Eight dining options run from Malaysian cooking to private beach dinners under the stars.

  15. The late Kerry Hill designed this beach resort on Malaysia's Desaru Coast, and his fingerprints are all over it: lush, layered, and at peace with its setting rather than imposing on it. Villas run toward the ultra-luxe end of the spectrum, and the Chenot spa and beach club are built for people who take their restoration seriously. Restaurants range from Mediterranean-Malaysian to an omakase counter, which covers most moods.

  16. Rank 221. Proof Pizza

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A wood-fired Neapolitan pizza spot in Bangsar that opens early enough to sell breakfast pastries, which tells you something about how seriously the team takes dough. The crust is certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, so the light, blistered edge is a point of pride rather than a happy accident. Calzones, fresh egg pasta, and Italian desserts round out the menu. It ranked 50th on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific.

  17. Tucked into a narrow bay in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, this Michelin-selected jungle-and-beach resort sits where dense rainforest meets soft sand, with coral reef just offshore. Villas are set back from the water for privacy and better views, ranging from one-bedroom beachfront retreats to three-bedroom hilltop suites, some with plunge pools. You reach it by ferry from Kota Kinabalu, which does a reasonable job of making you feel you've escaped somewhere.

  18. Cool, misty air and stone fireplaces in the middle of Malaysia: the Cameron Highlands Resort is a colonial-style hill-country hotel sitting nearly a mile above sea level, a few hours north of Kuala Lumpur. Four-poster beds, timber floors, and beamed ceilings set the tone, and daily high tea keeps the mood resolutely British. The Spa Village leans local, with treatments built around tea and strawberries, which is either charming or on-the-nose depending on your tolerance for theming.

  19. A twenty-minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu drops you at this over-water eco resort of thatch-roofed villas perched on a small cape of Gaya Island in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Room service arrives by raft, the spa runs caviar facials, and the on-site marine research center runs coral replanting dives, which neatly captures the whole vibe: barefoot but not cheap, remote but fully attended to. Monkeys and hornbills handle the ambient noise.

  20. A 222-room hotel in the center of Kota Kinabalu, with rooms done in greens and blues that nod to the rainforest and sea outside your balcony window. The ON23 Sky Bar, one spiral staircase above the restaurant, does craft cocktails with Bornean ingredients while the sun drops over the islands. Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and Jesselton Point pier are both a short walk, which makes the location as useful as it is pretty.

  21. Getting here involves a ferry to Tioman Island, then a sea taxi, then the acceptance that you're genuinely off the grid. JapaMala is an eco-resort of open-plan jungle chalets and Seacliff rooms on Malaysia's South China Sea coast, built to sit inside the landscape rather than clear it. Treetop villas skim the canopy, two restaurants perch on stilts or emerge from the trees, and the spa runs to cliffside hot tubs. Wi-fi exists, technically.

  22. Six shophouses stitched into one family compound after the war, now a small boutique hotel tucked into Malacca's old quarter. The original spiral staircase survived the restoration, and each suite mixes colonial bones with Peranakan tilework and art deco woodwork, so no two rooms feel quite alike. Jonker Street's antique shops are steps away, and the family who actually grew up here still runs the place, which explains why it doesn't feel like a set.

    The awards

  23. A boutique hotel in a UNESCO-listed city that somehow looks like it was transplanted from Brooklyn, clay bricks, exposed ductwork, and all. The rooms run larger than the local norm, dressed in a monochrome palette with bold wall murals and subway-tiled bathrooms. Downstairs, an all-day café pulls espresso and rotates through comfort food from wherever. Jonker Walk's night market is a short drive, and the historic monuments are closer still.

    The awards

  24. The owners dismantled a collection of antique Chinese, Malay, and colonial houses from their original sites and rebuilt them here, beam by beam. The result is a boutique resort that feels more like a small, eccentric neighborhood than a hotel. Heritage Houses range from multi-room splits to a self-contained unit, each mixing period architecture with contemporary interiors. No two are remotely alike, which is rather the point.

    The awards

  25. A former office block in central Kota Kinabalu, converted into a hotel whose name translates as "home" in Sama-Bajau. The lobby sets the tone with a spiral staircase in local Sabahan wood and a soundtrack curated by nearby musicians, while guest rooms go quieter, think curved wood panels, raffia headboards, and deep-green tiled bathrooms. An all-day coffee shop, a bar, and a rooftop Asian fusion terrace round things out for anyone not keen on rainforest lodges.

    The awards

  26. Clawfoot tubs, silk drapes, and polished teak floors in a colonial trader's mansion on the river, and that's before you've even found the Peranakan antiques tucked into the corners. The Majestic Malacca is a heritage hotel that wears its history lightly: afternoon tea in the salon, Kristang cooking in the dining room, and rooms that look out over the water. A place where the décor does all the talking, which is convenient because it has a lot to say.

    The awards

  27. Natural light through greenery and a quiet enough room to think straight make this coffee shop in KL Eco City a reliable escape from the mall-adjacent noise outside. The pour-over gets attention, and the pastries are freshly baked rather than just displayed. It leans minimalist without feeling cold, which draws the laptop crowd without becoming entirely theirs.

  28. Rank 241. VCR

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
