  1. A nondescript Katy strip mall is doing a lot of work here. Inside, the dining room runs to sleek fixtures and lazy susan-fitted private rooms, and the menu reads like a focused edit of Hong Kong classics rather than the usual encyclopedia. Congee, wonton soup, and candied walnut shrimp anchor things, with weekend seafood specials worth asking about. The Michelin Guide has it on their list, and the Houston Chronicle ranked it among the city's top restaurants.

  2. Flaky roti canai folded and crisped to order, torn apart and dragged through curry, is the move that explains Phat Eatery in a single gesture. This casual Malaysian street food spot in Katy draws a crowd happy to share plates of Hainanese chicken, beef rendang, and satay across a loud, affordable table. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas, which for a strip-mall canteen in the Houston suburbs is a sentence worth sitting with.

  3. Rank 4. El Tiempo Cantina

    Tex-Mex Cantina

  4. Molina's Cantina is a longtime Tex-Mex family restaurant, out in Fulshear's strip-mall sprawl, where half the menu is named after actual customers. Somewhere a regular is eating a burrito with his own name on it, smothered in chili con carne, and trying to look casual. It's sit-down enchilada-and-fajita territory with Houstonia nods for both its margaritas and its Mexican food, so jeans and an appetite will do.

  5. Rank 6. BB's Tex-Orleans

    Tex-Orleans Cajun & Creole

  6. Rank 6. Burns Original BBQ

    Houston Barbecue

This barbecue joint grew out of a small operation in Acres Homes and now has several locations, this Katy one included. Anthony Bourdain gave it his approval, and the menu is built for groups, with a baked potato the size of a toddler that feeds fifteen and a rib-and-link special named for the Astros. Chicken is there for anyone dodging red meat, and Kroger sells the stuff too, in case a drive feels like too much commitment.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
