The Best Places to Eat and Do in Midtown West & around

  1. Rank 1. Gabriel Kreuther

    Alsatian Bistro

The cheese trolley rolls through the dining room with the gravity of a state occasion, which tells you everything about the register of this Alsatian French fine dining room at the base of the Grace Building near Bryant Park. Gabriel Kreuther holds two Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds. The chef's French technique has an Alsatian core, the banquettes are cream, the servers are impeccably suited, and the Alsatian wine list is no afterthought.

  2. No photographs allowed at this omakase counter near the New York Public Library, which might be the point: chef Keiji Nakazawa's progression demands your full attention. He adjusts the rice's vinegar ratio for each piece of fish, ages and cures in the Edomae tradition, and makes cuts so precise a single slice becomes a composition. The hinoki counter faces towering ice boxes with carved wood doors. Three Michelin stars.

  3. Rank 3. Le Pavillon

    Contemporary French

A blown-glass chandelier hangs over the bar at this contemporary French fine dining room tucked into one of Midtown's newer towers, and the soaring ceilings and warm tones make the room feel less corporate than the address suggests. Daniel Boulud and his team steer the menu toward seafood and vegetables with global touches throughout. The whole thing holds a Michelin star, which fits the quietly serious crowd that fills it on a weeknight.

  4. Tucked into a corner of Grand Central at the base of One Vanderbilt, Jōji is an omakase counter that somehow makes midtown feel quiet. The meal moves from small plates through nigiri built on a careful Koshihikari-Nanatsuboshi rice blend, with much of the seafood sourced from Tokyo's Toyosu Market. Luxury ingredients run through the menu, so come with the card you don't think about. It holds a Michelin star.

  6. Rank 6. Cho Dang Gol

    Homestyle Korean

Soft tofu is the anchor of the menu at this homestyle Korean restaurant in Koreatown, which makes a quiet case for everything that isn't barbecue. Bubbling casseroles, spicy stews, pajeon, bibimbap, and cod roe omelet fill out a menu that reads like someone's grandmother wrote it. The dining room is wood tables and close quarters, warm enough that you forget you're on 35th Street. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on the New York Times list of the city's 100 best.

  7. The ceiling is covered in thousands of clay churchwarden pipes, each one claimed by a regular who never came back to collect it. Keens is an old-school Manhattan steakhouse in Midtown, all dark wood and white tablecloths, and the mutton chop alone has landed on the New York Times list of the city's defining dishes. The porterhouse is USDA Prime, dry-aged in-house, and broiled without apology. It sits at number 68 on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

  9. Rank 9. KJUN

    Korean Cajun & Creole

The mashup that writes itself on paper sometimes falls apart on the plate, but Korean and Cajun cooking share enough soul food DNA that at KJUN it holds together. The chef trained under the legendary Leah Chase in New Orleans, and the Murray Hill dining room reflects both that Southern lineage and her Korean roots, with fried dishes, rice, banchan, and Louisiana classics sharing the menu without any of them feeling like they wandered in from somewhere else.

  13. The southern edge of Bryant Park has quietly become Sichuan row, and Peppercorn Station is the bright, cheerful one with a menu built for ordering too much and splitting the bill. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it with a kitchen that keeps the heat calibrated, nudging the sinuses rather than punishing them. A casual Chinese restaurant where the numbing, golden broths and fermented black bean mapo tofu do the talking.

  14. Rank 13. Tonchin

    Authentic Ramen Shop

The tonkotsu broth here is pork-forward but never heavy, which sounds like a small thing until you've slogged through a bowl that coats your throat like spackling compound. This Tokyo-based ramen shop in Midtown pulls its noodles in-house, and they hold their spring all the way to the bottom of the bowl. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. The room is sleek enough for a working lunch and relaxed enough for a slow dinner.

  15. Rank 15. Zuma

    Japanese

Leather, iron, and glass fill the dining room at this upscale Japanese izakaya on Madison Avenue, where the sharing format means robata skewers and pristine sushi on shaved ice arrive at the table more or less continuously. The black cod wrapped in hoba leaf has become a signature across the brand's global outposts. Desserts, meanwhile, have their own Instagram following, which tells you something about the clientele and the lighting.

  20. Rank 20. Hyun

    Korean

Hyun butchers its Japanese A5 Wagyu in-house, and the tableside grilling is the whole show. It's a Korean barbecue restaurant, though the word "barbecue" barely covers the sleek dark wood, cool slate, and private dining rooms. The signature omakase runs through a dozen cuts, each one cooked to order, with house kimchi and a scallion salad doing the balancing work. Rice with uni and truffles keeps things humble. Dress accordingly and bring someone who won't flinch at the bill.

  21. Rank 20. OCTO

    Chinese Fusion Korean

The pork and Thai chili soup dumplings finished with a dot of caviar tell you where this Korean-Chinese fusion restaurant is pitching itself. OCTO runs an à la carte menu built around noodles, rice, and a dedicated dumpling workshop that tends to upstage everything around it. The Peking black duck and the beef tangsuyuk pull regulars back, but the room moves at a lively clip regardless of what anyone orders.

  22. Rank 20. Oyatte

    Contemporary Korean

A wood-clad lounge downstairs, where guests gather before heading up for the tasting menu, sets the tone at this intimate fine dining spot in Murray Hill. The kitchen leans on a Hudson Valley farm for much of its produce, weaving Korean influences through contemporary technique, fermentation included. Green porridge shows up as a signature, and the desserts tend toward the unexpected. Seasonality is the whole point here, and the menu moves accordingly.

  23. A Sichuan restaurant tucked along a quiet block near Bryant Park, where Midtown office workers have been eating around the secret for years. The kitchen runs on chili oil and Sichuan peppercorns, the kind that leave your lips buzzing pleasantly long after the bill arrives. Scallion pancakes, pork dumplings, braised fish with bean curd, and the spicy hot and sour noodles all make a case for themselves. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

  24. Rank 25. Grand Brasserie

    Classic French

Inside Grand Central Terminal, this vast all-day French brasserie runs from the pre-dawn commuter rush straight through to a late-night dinner crowd, 365 days a year. The scale is genuinely staggering, which means walk-ins are usually fine, a minor miracle in Midtown. The menu swings from a lobster omelet at breakfast to classic brasserie fare at dinner, with the room itself doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
