The 20 Best Places to Eat and Stay in Bronx

The best places to eat and stay in Bronx, according to the experts: The New York Times, The Infatuation, and Time Out have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Lechonera La Piraña comes out on top.

  1. Rank 2. Tobalá

    Modern Oaxacan

House-made blue and yellow corn tortillas arrive before you've even thought about ordering, which tells you something about how this Oaxacan restaurant in Riverdale operates. The room is modern and low-lit, with clay masks and pottery that nod to the region without tipping into theme park territory. Mezcal gets serious attention at the bar, and the dark mole negro on the enmoladas de pato is the kind of sauce that takes days to make.

  2. Rank 3. Mario's Restaurant

    Historic Italian

  3. Rank 5. Çka Ka Qëllu

    Eastern European

Glass cases of embroidered regional dress line the walls of this Albanian restaurant on Arthur Avenue, next to the old retail market, where the food runs to burek and cabbage rolls stuffed with ground veal. The Bronx's Albanian community has been quietly growing for decades, and this is where it eats. The menu is the comforting, filling kind, and the brumat sampler is a reasonable place to start if you've never eaten Albanian before.

  5. The brick oven is the anchor here, turning out thin-crusted pizzas with just enough char on a Morris Park block that mostly ignores trends. Patricia's is a sit-down Italian restaurant with high ceilings, exposed brick, and a semi-open kitchen that makes the room feel lively without being loud. The wine list leans into obscure Italian varietals, and the cocktails are worth a look before you settle in for something from the sea.

  6. Rank 8. Seis Vecinos

    Central American Mexican

A sunny corner restaurant at the base of a grand Bronx building, Seis Vecinos pulls from El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico without trying to smooth everything into a unified thesis. Papusas, baleadas, and enchiladas share the menu without apology. The guacamole arrives in a molcajete and gets finished at the table, which is exactly the right way to start. The staff is warm and the room follows suit.

  10. Rank 14. Casa Della Mozzarella

    Old-School Italian

  11. A short staircase down from a quiet Schuylerville corner takes you into one of those slice shops that seems to exist slightly outside of time. Louie & Ernie's has been around forever, slinging margherita pies and sausage pizzas to a neighborhood that hasn't changed much either. The New York Times put it on their list of the city's 22 best pizza places, which is the kind of recognition that surprises no one who's actually been here.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
