Rank 2. Revel
Contemporary American
The Pittsburgh Steak Salad has its loyalists, and Revel is one of the places those loyalists defend. It's a contemporary American restaurant and cocktail spot next to Market Square, which makes it a natural landing pad after a day downtown or before a show. The menu runs from flatbreads to crab cakes, the wine list is long, and the cocktails are thought through. A comfortable, grown-up room that earns its after-work crowd without any particular fuss.

Rank 5. Bigham Tavern
American
A neighborhood wing-and-beer bar on Mount Washington where game day is less an event than a baseline condition. The patio fills up when the weather cooperates, and the crowd skews toward regulars who know the beer list without looking. The wings are the reason people make the trip up from other parts of Pittsburgh, and the pub menu around them is solid enough that nobody's leaving hungry.

Rank 9. Butterjoint
American
The smell of butter hits before you've even read the menu, which is a fine way to start a weekend lunch. Butterjoint is a casual neighborhood spot in Oakland doing sandwiches, pierogi, and baked goods with a serious hand. The rolls with roasted cipollini onion butter and the vinegar pie, a Depression-era custardy thing with a crunchy top, are reason enough to come. Colorful booths in the bar section fill up fast.
