  1. Barista Del Barrio is a counter-service Mexican spot on Grande Avenue where the burritos get pressed on the grill until they could pass for paninis, then arrive two to an order. The house chorizo runs heavy on red chile and sheds orange oil down your wrists, so grab extra napkins. The chef was a James Beard Semifinalist for Best Chef: Southwest, which the paper-towel-and-cup-of-coffee setting politely ignores.

  2. Rank 2. El Taco Rustico

    Coahuila Mexican

The exterior mural of mariachi musicians on Oracle Road is hard to miss, and inside the checkered floors and chalkboard specials keep the vibe going. This is a Coahuila-style taqueria where the quesabirria tacos, slow-braised beef and melted cheese in crispy corn tortillas with consommé for dipping, are the reason the place fills up fast. The menu runs deeper than tacos, with mesquite-grilled ribs and carne asada burritos holding their own.

  4. Mesquite-grilled carne asada is the throughline at this modern Mexican steakhouse in downtown Tucson, where exposed brick and wooden beams split the difference between industrial and hacienda. The menu pushes traditional Mexican cooking into unexpected territory, lobster stuffed inside masa, chile verde stirred into mac and cheese, surf and turf riffing on enchiladas. A long tequila and mezcal list means no one is leaving dry.

  5. The pink adobe exterior south of the Convention Center has been pulling people off Main Avenue for generations, and the murals inside haven't changed much either. El Minuto is an old-school Sonoran Mexican restaurant, the kind where the red-sauced enchiladas and carne seca chimichangas do the talking and the room already knows it. Bring cash, arrive hungry, and don't skip the sopapillas.

  6. Rank 8. Penca

    Central Mexican

Exposed brick and vintage touches give this downtown Tucson restaurant a warm, slightly polished feel, the kind of room that works for a date or a slow weekday lunch with too much mezcal. The menu leans into Central Mexican cooking, where the chiles rellenos have earned a following of their own and roasted bone marrow arrives with epazote chimichurri and flour tortillas. A sidewalk patio handles the evenings when the desert air cooperates.

  7. A mural of Anthony Bourdain watches over the salsa bar at this colorful westside Mexican spot, which also happens to make a mole latte. The blackboard menu shifts constantly, running from mahi mahi tacos to vegan Cuban tacos, so there's rarely a reason to expect the same meal twice. Hikers coming down from Tumamoc Hill fill the room, still sandy from the trail, which tells you roughly what to wear.

  8. Outdoor-only seating under a covered brick patio means you're eating in the Tucson sun no matter what, which somehow feels exactly right for a no-frills Mexican spot that's been feeding the neighborhood forever. Carne asada tacos, chile rellenos in tomato sauce, tamales, breakfast burritos, horchata from a big jar on the counter. The menu hasn't drifted toward trend, and the regulars at the picnic tables seem glad about that.

  9. Rank 9. Tanias 33

    Mexican

Hand-painted signage and coolers stocked with aguas frescas and Mexican sodas set the tone at this old-school Tucson taquería. The menu runs from breakfast burritos to chilaquiles to pozole available by the cup or, if things are going well, by the gallon. Vegetarians eat as well as anyone here, which is not always a given at a place this unapologetically no-frills. Bring cash and an appetite calibrated for generous portions.

  11. Rank 12. The Monica

    Mexican

String lights turn a downtown alley into a courtyard, and that outdoor patio is reason enough to seek this place out on a warm Tucson evening. The Monica is a casual Mexican restaurant where the kitchen plays with familiar forms, running tamale dough through a eggs Benedict riff that shouldn't work as well as it does. The room reads urban but unfussy, the kind of spot that pulls in a mixed downtown crowd without trying too hard.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
