  1. Rank 1. Joon

    Persian

The rice alone explains why the New York Times put this upscale Persian restaurant on its 2024 restaurant list: the tadig comes out with a shattering crust, and the fluffy sour-cherry version beside it is its own argument. Classic stews anchor the menu, with duck fessenjoon and beef with dried lime doing the heavy lifting. The room is relaxed enough for families, polished enough for a proper date.

  2. Mustard-yellow banquettes under crystal chandeliers set the mood at this New American dinner spot on a quiet Vienna block. Servers know regulars by name and steer newcomers toward plates styled close enough to still-life paintings to make you feel briefly cultured. The kitchen does comforting and polished at once, which is a harder trick than the candlelight makes it look. Locals apparently treat it as a reliable date-night insurance policy, and the odds do seem to favor them.

  4. Rank 4. Ingle Korean Steakhouse

    Korean Steakhouse

The water arrives with a tray of cucumbers, lime, and lemon so you can pick your infusion, which tells you something about how seriously this Korean steakhouse in Vienna takes its choices. A six-course prix fixe builds around American wagyu cuts grilled tableside, but nearly every element is yours to configure, from appetizers to noodles to the savory finish. The kind of place where the decisions feel like half the dinner.

  5. Rank 4. Nostos

    Greek

The tableside saganaki arrives in a burst of actual flames, which sets the tone for everything that follows. This is a proper Greek restaurant, the kind where white curtains billow, conversations run in several languages at once, and a server steers you toward an Assyrtiko without being asked. The wine list leans Greek and the dips arrive with warm pita still soft from the oven.

  6. The name is a tribute to two grandmothers who believed life's best moments happen when everyone squeezes around the dinner table, and the dining room, with its exposed-beam rafters and rosemary focaccia drifting from the open kitchen, takes that mandate seriously. This is a neighborhood restaurant in the warm, come-as-you-are mold, where the menu leans into comfort food handled with care, pasta buried under braised brisket and meatballs being the kind of dish that turns a Tuesday into something.

  7. A cooking cart wheeled tableside for nearly every order is the signature move at this Italian restaurant in Vienna, where Roberto Donna has brought back guéridon service as a centerpiece rather than a novelty. The fettuccini alla parmigiana gets twisted in a parmesan wheel right in front of you, which is a lot of theater that happens to also produce very good pasta. The room is warm and neighborhood-beloved, without behaving like a neighborhood restaurant.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
