The Top 100 Places to Eat Near Preserve

Rank 2. Preserve
American
A small Annapolis dining room built around pickling and fermentation, which sounds like a thesis until the food arrives. The roast chicken is beautifully bronzed, the steak-frites comes with kimchi-beef jus, and the crab salad on hash browns is the kind of thing that makes you forgive everyone their restaurant concepts. The bar earns equal attention. A Washingtonian top-100 pick.

Barbecue
A counter-service BBQ spot in suburban Maryland where the American Wagyu brisket is buttery enough to stop conversation mid-sentence. The smoked turkey and peppery pork ribs fill out a tray you'll keep adding to despite your better judgment, and the sides, brisket-studded beans included, pull their weight. Lines form fast, so regulars often grab their bags and go. A James Beard semifinalist, and ranked tenth on Washingtonian's top 100.

New York-style pies with a slightly puffed, almost Neapolitan edge are the calling card at this pizzeria in Baltimore's Little Italy. The dough is made by hand, the ingredients skew Italian, and the menu rounds out with salads and baked fillings. The family behind it rebuilt after Katrina, which perhaps explains why the place feels like it has something to prove. Ranked 44th on 50 Top Pizza USA.

Rank 59. Gravitas
Contemporary New American
A Michelin-starred tasting room in Ivy City, which is either an unlikely destination or exactly the kind of discovery that makes you feel smug at dinner parties. The industrial space, all exposed brick and bare walls, gets softened by plants and an open kitchen. Set menus run three, four, or six courses of contemporary New American cooking that takes local ingredients somewhere quietly ambitious. Bring someone you want to impress.

Rank 63. Albi
Palestinian
Everything at this Palestinian live-fire restaurant in Navy Yard passes through a roaring open hearth before it reaches the table, and the renovated dining room leaves the kitchen's fire in full view. Michael Rafidi, a James Beard Outstanding Chef winner with a Michelin star, draws on his family's Ramallah roots while working with mid-Atlantic seasons. The tasting menu is the move, though the wood-fired lamb pies and hummus hold their own à la carte.

Rank 64. Daru
Indian
The Sanskrit logo rings the window of this lively neighborhood Indian restaurant on a Capitol Hill corner, and the sidewalk fills up the moment the weather cooperates. The kitchen, run by Rasika veterans, takes classic Indian cuisine sideways, folding blue cheese into tandoor chicken kebabs and sending minced bison into momos. A Michelin Bib Gourmand for a room that buzzes rather than whispers.

Rank 65. Pascual
Mexican
The name honors San Pasqual, patron saint of cooks, and someone in the kitchen grinds masa from heirloom corn every single day. This energetic Capitol Hill Mexican restaurant is built around the hearth, and the chefs spent two years working with local farmers just to secure the right herbs. Everything lands in the middle of the table for sharing. It landed on North America's 50 Best list, and getting a reservation still takes some planning.

A corn broth that quietly dismantles everything you thought about corn broth is a good sign you're in the right place. Elcielo is a Michelin-starred fine dining tasting menu restaurant near Union Market where the Colombian-born chef turns his home country into a deeply personal, course-by-course argument. The chocotherapy dessert has become a thing people mention unprompted. The room runs warm in a way that doesn't feel managed.

Rank 82. Pineapple & Pearls
New American
Chefs in custom gold Nikes, LL Cool J on the speakers, and caviar occasionally served with gummy bears: Aaron Silverman's Capitol Hill tasting room is not doing the hushed-temple thing. This prix-fixe spot holds a Michelin star while leaning hard into the party, with tableside absinthe cocktails and truffle-laced dishes that arrive with a story attached. Dress up, because the room absolutely will.

Rank 85. Masseria
Puglian Italian
A converted warehouse in NoMa where the stainless-steel open kitchen and a glass-encased wine cellar share a room with exposed brick and farmhouse warmth, somehow without contradiction. Nicholas Stefanelli's tasting menu draws on his Puglian roots, and the pasta and bread courses show it most plainly. The staff seem to genuinely enjoy being here, which guests tend to catch. A Michelin star and a spot on 50 Top Italy's global list.
-
Rank 86. Rose's Luxury
American
String lights hang above a counter facing an open kitchen, and the menu opens with challah that the kitchen calls "really, really, really good" without any embarrassment. Rose's Luxury is a prix-fixe spot in Capitol Hill where the cooking runs from spiced pork with lychee to Korean rice cakes in gochujang alla vodka, all served family-style and at a pace that feels more like a dinner party than a restaurant. It holds a Michelin star.

Cambodian Taiwanese Coffee Shop
Sneakers mounted on the wall are, in fact, for sale, which tells you everything about the vibe before you've ordered. Erik Bruner-Yang's café and all-day dining room on H Street blends a retail shop with Cambodian and Taiwanese cooking, all meant for the table to share. The caramel fried chicken has been on the menu long enough to qualify as a classic, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand suggests the kitchen isn't coasting on that.

Rank 94. Omakase at Barracks Row
Japanese
Fourteen seats at a counter, up a set of metal stairs past paintings made by pressing inked fish onto rice paper, which is either the best possible preview of dinner or a very specific art movement. This Michelin-starred omakase pulls seasonal seafood from Tokyo's Toyosu market, and the chef trained under Nakazawa before landing here. A Minibar alum walks you through each piece with the care of someone who means it.
-
A glass-walled dining room that reads more like a sunroom than a tasting menu destination, Little Pearl is the quieter, more intimate sibling in the Rose's Luxury family of Capitol Hill restaurants. The seasonal menu rotates constantly, save for the signature angel egg amuse, and the wine pairings show the same offbeat curiosity as the food. A Michelin star, and somehow one of the more approachable price points among D.C. tasting menus.

Rank 100. Northwest Chinese Food
Chinese
Knife-cut noodles made in-house anchor the menu at this casual College Park storefront serving the bold flavors of northwest China. Mouth-numbing red chilies and black vinegar show up everywhere, from chili-oil dumplings to griddled flatbread sandwiches. Kumquat lemon tea and sour-plum juice are on hand for anyone who underestimated the heat. The University of Maryland crowd has clearly done the math on the price-to-fire ratio.
