Rank 287. Uchi
Japanese
The chef spent years learning to speak, read, and write Japanese before opening this fine dining restaurant on South Lamar, and that rigor still shapes every plate. Uchi's thing is raw or lightly cooked seafood paired with unexpected partners, citrus, fruit, even goat cheese, and it helped build Austin into a serious destination for Japanese-influenced cooking. The New York Times named it among Austin's best restaurants.

Rank 316. Posse East
Burger Joint
The queso has been pulling in UT students and neighborhood regulars since before most of them were born. Posse East is a campus-adjacent sports bar on Duval with wood-paneled walls, neon signs, a live music stage, and a covered patio that fills up on game days. Outside, a lone palm tree gives it an oddly Californian silhouette; inside, it is pure Texas roadhouse. Cold beer, solid burgers, and that queso keep the cycle going.

A gas station kitchen in West Campus that somehow renders the question "what do you want to eat?" basically unanswerable, because the menu covers Mexican food, deli sandwiches, breakfast, hot dogs, and burgers without flinching. The burritos are massive, the tacos come street-style, and the sandwiches run Boar's Head meats on sourdough with house chipotle mayo. A reliable feed before, after, or instead of whatever else you had planned.

A cookie cart parked at the Webberville Food Truck Park, where the rotating drops mean the selection changes often enough to justify returning before you've digested your lunch. The chocolate chip comes with sea salt, the Hot Honey Cornbread brings a little heat, and previous runs have included a Fruity Pebble Cheesecake Cookie that people still talk about with an air of grief. One cookie is technically shareable. Most people leave with several.

Rank 317. Coquito
Caribbean
The little neon sign out front is easy to miss, but the Kelly green interior and relic-inspired decor make up for it fast. Coquito is a Latin fusion cafe on East Seventh that runs a day-to-night double life: cold brew spiked with coquito and tortas by afternoon, DJs and a packed dance floor after dark. The name comes from Puerto Rico's traditional Christmas drink, which tells you something about the warmth of the place in general.

A matcha truck parked near UT that grew out of its co-founder's cancer recovery, which is about as meaningful an origin story as a café can have. Ceremonial-grade matcha is the baseline, with rotating flavors like pistachio and rose moving through quickly among students and regulars. In a city where food trucks are practically a civic institution, this one keeps the vibe calm and the drinks deeply, conspicuously green.

Rank 317. La Mezca
Speakeasy
The Veracruz All Natural team tucked a mezcal and tequila speakeasy into Mueller, and the agave nerd crowd found it immediately. La Mezca is a cocktail bar where staff can take you deep into single-village production or just shake you a very good mezcal margarita, depending on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. Taquitos from the Veracruz kitchen handle the rest.

A cafe and bar where the grounds do half the work: twenty tree species, a working garden, and a stream running through a South Austin property that makes it surprisingly easy to justify a third coffee. The team behind Veracruz All Natural and DEE DEE partnered up here, so the food skews Mexican and Thai alongside the cafe menu. Come for the laptop-friendly shade, stay because it turns into a bar once the afternoon earns it.

Rank 317. Lynny's
Bakery
Sixties decor and biscuits are the whole agenda at this kitschy East Austin cafe. The brick-and-mortar on East 12th is the sit-down sibling to a food truck, and it earns its slow-brunch crowd with diner coffee that won't punish you and biscuits that split into sweet and savory directions depending on your mood. A place designed for lingering, which, in a city that keeps speeding up, is a minor act of defiance.

Rank 317. Old Jerusalem
Middle Eastern
The wood-fired oven handles both meat skewers and cheesy pizza pies, which tells you this Northwest Hills Middle Eastern spot has range. Hummus, falafel, baba ghanouj, and shawarma anchor the menu, and the breakfast service alone sets it apart from the usual halal shortlist. The bright, patio-fronted room draws soccer watch parties and families in equal measure, which means it's already building the kind of regulars that take years to earn.

Rank 317. The Lost Well
Dive Bar
The address, a half-address on Airport, tells you something about the attitude before you walk in. The Lost Well is a punk rock bar and live music venue that relocated from Webberville when the landlord's patience ran out, and the new room landed so naturally it feels like the place was always here. Bigger than before, still loud, still dive-y in all the right ways, it draws a crowd that knows every band on the bill without checking the poster.

A daisy painted on the facade of what looks like a converted lobby is all the sign you get, so consider this your heads-up. Daisy Lounge is a speakeasy tucked into a Circle C Ranch strip mall, far from the usual Downtown clusters, with built-in bookshelves, armchairs, and a multi-floor floral interior that reads more cozy library than hidden bar. The cocktail menu runs classics alongside house originals. Book ahead.

Rank 334. Desilicious Cafe
Indian Café
Desilicious is a casual South Indian cafe on Parmer Lane where the menu runs past 80 kinds of dosa, chapathi, and parotta, plus breakfast staples like idly and pongal. The room does not compete: metal pitchers of water wait on every table, the air conditioning is more of a suggestion, and the TV plays Indian pop videos through tinny speakers. Order the chai, then keep coming back until you've worked through the list.

The line at this Rosedale brewpub sometimes spills into the parking lot, which tells you most of what you need to know. It's been around forever, pours a serious range of craft beer, and keeps the food exactly where it belongs: fish and chips, hot dogs, chili cheese fries. Grab a spot at the big bar or drag yourself out to the patio, where the furniture looks assembled from good intentions and spare parts.

Pizzeria
Parked near a gas station in North Loop, Feral is a food truck doing two distinct styles of pizza: thin, crispy sourdough rounds and pan pies with the sauce on top, both finished with garlic oil. The pan pizza is the more interesting argument. Order ahead if you're impatient, because the devoted regulars who've adopted this place keep the line moving at its own pace.

Fresa's is a casual Mexican spot on North Lamar, easy to find thanks to a giant rotating neon chicken that does most of the marketing. The wood-grilled chicken anchors a menu of bowls and tacos for people who want to feel virtuous before noon. There's a drive-through for the days Austin heat turns the car into the only reasonable dining room. Order at the counter, keep it casual, and wear whatever survived the commute.

Pizzeria
Home Slice is a casual Austin pizzeria where the pies come the size of a hubcap and the debates run to which Mario Kart character you'd room with. Order it by the slice if you're solo, or split an Italian sub, wings, and a Greek salad that somehow feels like a plot twist. It's counter-service beer-and-negroni territory, and shorts are the dress code.

Belgian Beer Bar
Twenty-four Belgian taps gleam behind the bar, and the bottle list runs past forty deep. This is a Belgian beer bar in the truest sense, with Trappist ales, hefeweizens, and pilsners anchoring the list alongside a few Central Texas picks for local color. The exposed brick and silver hardware make the room feel appropriately serious. If you're celebrating something, the move is sabering a giant bottle of Deus and drinking it from champagne glasses, which is ridiculous and correct.

Speakeasy
They take your phone at the door, lock it away, and mean it. Hidden behind a casual sandwich cafe downtown, Powder Room is an art deco speakeasy where table service and reservations are both required, which sets the tone. Cocktails run from light and herbal to firmly stirred, and the menu is organized by mood rather than spirit. A good place to be present, as they say, whether you planned that or not.

Super Thai is a casual Thai spot on South Lamar, announced by big colorful letters that save everyone a lot of reading. The front half is a takeout operation where the phones never stop and people come and go every few seconds. Past the host stand, a cozy dining room and a long bar take walk-ins, and the weekday lunch menu keeps portions small enough that you can still return to work upright.

Rank 334. Trona
Speakeasy
The entrance is a gated alley door with a buzzer, which already tells you something about the evening ahead. Trona is a speakeasy cocktail bar in Central East Austin that draws equally from Mexico and Japan, so mezcal and tequila share the back bar with Japanese whisky. The space runs narrow with a small patio, and reservations are the move. Bringing a date here feels a little smug, which is kind of the point.

Vaquero Taquero is a tiny taco counter on East 31st where nothing on the menu costs more than five dollars, which makes it a rare lunch that won't require explaining your finances to anyone. The al pastor comes with pineapple, and the spiciest salsa is there for people who like a little drama. The room is small enough that you should bring one friend, maybe two if you're feeling reckless.

Rank 398. Maie Day
Steakhouse
Inside the South Congress Hotel, Maie Day is a steakhouse in the way a band covers a song, recognizable but slightly, pleasingly off. The chef behind Olamaie runs this one, and the menu leans on shareable plates, seafood-forward starters, and cuts that stray from the usual canon, a whiskey-brined pork chop, a chicken fried steak with peppery white gravy. The room is festive in the non-embarrassing sense, and the blooming onion is back, earnestly.
