  9. Rank 220. Torien Yakitori

    Yakitori Japanese

A dinky Japanese garden leads into a yakitori counter where local chickens, prepped fresh each day, go over the grill with nothing but salt so each cut can argue for itself. The chef spent time honing the craft in Japan, and the set menu moves through cuts most people have never thought to order. Counter seats watch the kitchen the whole time, which is half the point. Call ahead if you want chicken sashimi or squab.

  21. Smoke from the cooking pits reaches you before the menu does. This semi-open-air restaurant sits on a mountainside outside the city, framed by green hills, and the kitchen's centerpiece is lamb slow-cooked for a full day in rice wine and a rotating blend of Chinese herbs, tuned warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The broth is dark and medicinal in the best way. Wild greens and game meats round things out, and the savory rice runs weekends only.

  27. Rank 220. Xiantaosu

    Vegetarian Chinese

Rattan pendant lights and deep red walls give this cosy vegetarian restaurant in Zuoying a warmth that matches the cooking, which leans on grilling and fermentation to pull real depth from vegetables. The menu is carefully labeled for vegan and other dietary needs, so the table can sort itself out without fuss. A plant-based meal that takes technique seriously, in a room that doesn't feel like a compromise.

  44. Rank 220. Zhu Xin Ju

    Taiwanese

A restored red-brick mansion on Sinyi Street sets the stage for an omakase experience built around old Taiwanese banquet cooking. The chef works from traditional recipes, letting local seasonal ingredients carry the meal through seven dishes and a soup. It's the kind of formal, unhurried dinner where the room and the food are making the same argument about how things used to be done.

  47. The oven sits dead center in the room, so you watch the pizza makers the whole time, which turns out to be half the point. This is a compact Neapolitan-style pizzeria, eight or ten wooden tables, big windows, and a menu that stays almost entirely focused on pizza, red or white, plus a few focaccias. The dough has real structure and a properly blistered crust. Ranked on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific, and reservations are worth booking ahead.

  48. Rank 448. Gino Pizza

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan-style gas oven sits on full display as you walk in, which sets expectations immediately at this casual pizza shop in Xinzhuang. The room is high-ceilinged and easygoing, with a small blue room tucked toward the back for when you want to pretend you're somewhere quieter. The menu covers white and red pizzas, Italian-style pastas, and desserts, with a short Italian beer list to wash it down. It ranked 45th on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific.

  49. Rank 448. Vesuvio pizzeria

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Fried pizza sits on the menu alongside the baked kind, which tells you this Neapolitan pizzeria in Lukang takes its Campanian credentials seriously. The dough is soft and well-leavened, the crust fragrant, and the toppings are chosen with real restraint. A gorgonzola and coppa combination turns out to be the quiet standout. Ranked on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific, Vesuvio is a long way from Naples and seems entirely unbothered by that fact.

  50. A two-story house tucked into a lane off Linsen North Road, After5 is a coffee shop that slides into neighborhood bar as the evening arrives. The lofted upper floor looks down over the main bar, which gives the place a lived-in, borrowed-apartment feeling. Single-origin coffees and fruit-forward signature drinks share the menu with tea, and later with beer and alcohol. It's the kind of spot where nobody seems to be in a hurry to leave.

  51. The walls at this coffee shop in Da'an are lined with art and design magazines, album covers, and posters that feel like someone's actual collection rather than set dressing. The menu splits cleanly between espresso drinks and pour-overs, and the whole operation has that same unhurried quality. There's a small interior and a semi-enclosed porch out front. You can stop in for a quick one, but weekday mornings have a way of stretching.

  52. A specialty coffee shop on Dihua Street, one of Taipei's oldest commercial strips, where the narrow shophouse format and the smell of roasting beans compete for your attention. The team roasts in-house and pours to order, which means you'll wait a little and won't mind. Relaxed enough that regulars spread out with laptops and books and nobody rushes them along.

  53. A coffee shop on the 89th floor of Taipei 101, which does settle the question of where to take a meeting when you want the other person slightly off-balance. kafeD is a calm, unhurried cafe serving pour-overs and lattes alongside light pastries, with the kind of view that makes the city below look like a very convincing scale model. Come for the coffee, stay because the elevator ride back down feels like commitment.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
