  1. Rank 1. Ru Yuan

    Zhejiang

Ru Yuan sits inside the Hangzhou Botanical Garden, its floor-to-ceiling windows pulling the trees and stillness directly into the dining room. This is refined Zhejiang tasting-menu territory, the kind where dim lighting and low seating signal that the food is doing the talking. The chef's project is revival, not reinvention, bringing patience to heritage recipes that shortcuts had flattened elsewhere. Two Michelin stars and a spot on Asia's 50 Best at number ten.

  2. A fine dining room inside a resort hotel, set within a bamboo grove and built around the idea that Jiangnan cuisine carries an emotional charge, not just a flavor profile. The kitchen works with seasonal regional ingredients and traditional techniques, nudging them just far enough that the food feels familiar and slightly surprising at once. Thirteen private suites handle the banquet crowd. It holds two Michelin stars.

  6. Rank 3. Jin Sha

    Modern Zhejiang

The dining room sits inside the Four Seasons on West Lake, which sets certain expectations, and Jin Sha mostly ignores them in the best way, leaning hard into Zhejiang soul food rather than globe-trotting hotel cuisine. The chef builds a modern Cantonese-adjacent menu around seasonal local ingredients, and what arrives at the table looks architectural but eats like something a grandmother would have strong opinions about. It holds a Michelin star.

  11. Rank 3. Wild Yeast

    Chinese-French

Seafood pulled from the East China Sea arrives at this contemporary Chinese restaurant in Hangzhou's Binjiang district with a precision that suggests the kitchen takes terroir as seriously as any French farmhouse. The team builds a menu around Taizhou produce, threading classical Chinese instincts through a modern, almost architectural presentation. One Michelin star and a spot on The 50 Discovery list confirm the room is not just scenery.

  14. Perched above the Grand Canal in a mixed-use tower, this Four Seasons leans into what the design firm called "urban Zen," layered stone and pale wood doing quiet work against a floor-to-ceiling skyline. It's a full-service city hotel where the Chinese restaurant takes regional cooking seriously and tea service in the lounge is treated like a ritual, not an afterthought. The spa and pool sit high enough above Hangzhou to feel genuinely removed from it.

  15. Stone pathways and clay-tiled roofs wind through what was, not so long ago, an actual village: Amanfayun is a luxury resort built from 47 restored traditional courtyard dwellings set among tea fields and bamboo groves near West Lake. Behind the calligraphy scrolls and pitched wooden roofs are king-sized beds and underfloor heating. Buddhist temples are walkable, West Lake is a short drive, and the spa menu runs from traditional Chinese massage to tai chi.

  16. The lobby is on the 37th floor, the pool is higher still, and the glass-bottomed bar platform juts past the building's edge, so you spend the whole stay slightly airborne. This luxury hotel in Hangzhou's eastern business district has New York firm Yabu Pushelberg's fingerprints all over it: plum blossom headboards, lake-blue tones, and marble, with Qiantang River views through floor-to-ceiling windows. West Lake is a short drive away when you finally come back down.

  17. Two futuristic glass towers rise above the Qiantang River, and the hotel leans into that drama at every turn: rounded corners, polished marble, metallic accents, and a rippling glass installation in the lobby that riffs on nearby West Lake. The 324-room luxury hotel sits in one of China's ancient capitals, with Hangzhou's famous willow-fringed West Lake close enough that the designers couldn't stop referencing it, and neither can you.

  51. A 27-acre estate tucked into the tea hills above Hangzhou, Dragon Well Manor is a farm-to-table restaurant that takes the concept more seriously than most: the chef keeps a handwritten ledger logging every ingredient, its source, and its delivery date, and you can ask to see it. The kitchen draws from an on-site organic plot and local farms the team scouts personally. It earned a spot on The 50 Discovery list, and the setting alone, wooden buildings amid working tea fields, does a lot of the talking.

  52. The outdoor pool here is enormous enough that you'd briefly forget you're in one of southern China's largest cities. This Shangri-La property runs to over 700 rooms, a putting green, tennis courts, and grounds lush enough to feel more resort than urban hotel. Business travelers come for the nearby exhibition center; everyone else comes to escape downtown traffic. The metro is a short walk away when the city beckons.

  53. The Grand Hyatt's flagship dining room sits right on the edge of West Lake, and the kitchen leans into that geography, building its menus around the fish and seafood at the heart of Hangzhou cuisine. It's a formal, elegant space where the cooking is careful and precise, the service polished, and the whole experience reads as a special-occasion destination rather than a casual drop-in.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
