The best Japanese food in Maui, according to the experts: The Infatuation and Eater have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. 1054 Togoshi sushi restaurant comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Kihei and Haiku.

More Less

Broth Cafe - Alive & Well and Ichiban Okazuya Hawaii hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  3. Rank 2. KOMO

    Sushi

The design riffs on the 1930s luxury steamship that once ran between the Hawaiian Islands, all sleek curves and amber light, which is a lot of scene-setting for a sushi bar but somehow earns it. Chef Kiyo Ikeda works the counter with fresh-grated wasabi and Hokkaido scallops topped with caviar. Dessert arrives in a Jewel Box, and you leave with a daruma doll for good luck, because of course you do.

  4. Rank 2. Nuka

    Modern Japanese

The fish on the sashimi platter came off the owner's own boat, which is the kind of detail that makes a menu honest. Nuka is a modern izakaya and sushi bar tucked into a converted auto supply shop in Haiku, where the room is low-key and the food is sharper than the address suggests. Small plates, sushi, rice bowls, and cold drinks keep things relaxed and affordable.

  5. Rank 2. Oao

    Stylish Sushi

Tucked into a strip mall at the edge of Wailea, this stylish sushi bar punches well above its shopping-center address. The nigiri is the draw, but the menu drifts into baked rolls, rock shrimp tempura, and lamb chops rubbed with aji panca that have no obvious business being this good. Happy hour runs daily in the late afternoon, when small plates come at a noticeable discount. Bring a reservation and someone who can't decide what they want.

  6. Rank 2. Takumi Maui

    Artisan Sushi

A sharkskin grater, some earthen ceramics, and knives that could plausibly start a conflict: the counter at this sushi shop tells you everything before a piece of fish appears. The chef trained at Morimoto's before opening this intimate spot in the Fairway Shops, where you can order a la carte most days. Weekends, the omakase seats about a dozen people for a long, unhurried dinner with fish flown in from Toyosu Market.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
