  1. Rank 1. Cibû

    Regional Portuguese

Tucked into a small alley beside a coastal fort, Cibû takes its name from a Trás-os-Montes expression, which sets the tone: deeply Portuguese at heart, with a Nordic edge in the stone walls and heavy wood. The chef came home after stints in Norway and Switzerland, and the menu shows it, pairing traditional regional cooking with cleaner northern instincts. Dishes are designed for sharing, and the desserts have a reputation of their own.

  2. The name nods to resin extraction and the chef's family roots in that craft, which tells you something about how seriously this vegan and vegetarian restaurant takes its relationship with the land. The menu shifts with the season and the chef's mood, offered as a six or eleven-dish set, and leans contemporary in plating and imagination. Expect combinations that feel genuinely thought through rather than assembled by committee.

  3. The soup comes first, every day, which tells you something about the priorities at this casual lunch spot near the Matosinhos Market. The short weekday menu rotates with whatever looked good at the stalls that morning, landing anywhere from pasta to chicken curry. Hearty open-faced toasts fill out the lighter end of things. The whole operation runs at market pace: quick, unfussy, and done by afternoon.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
