Rank 1. New England Lobster Market & Eatery
New England
Seawater tanks full of live crustaceans greet you at the door of this sprawling seafood market and casual eatery tucked into an industrial warehouse in Burlingame. You order at the counter, pick your lobster by the pound, and eat surrounded by painted buoys while the place buzzes around you. It functions as a fish market too, so oysters on the half shell are there if you want them. The Michelin Guide has had its eye on it for years.

Rank 3. Curry Hyuga
Curry Japanese
The chef here trained in fine dining and then opened a Japanese curry shop in a Burlingame strip mall, which is either a pivot or a philosophy. The curry is built on three-hour caramelized onions and two dozen spices, and it eats like something that took considerably longer than it costs. Katsudon and a buttery corn soup round out the short menu. Casual, counter-service priced, and named among the Bay Area's best Japanese spots by the Chronicle.
