The 79 Best Places to Drink and Stay in Vancouver

The best places to drink and stay in Vancouver, according to the experts: Forbes Travel Guide, Michelin Guide, and Vancouver Magazine have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Fairmont Pacific Rim comes out on top.

More Less

Botanist and Prophecy hold the next two places. Golden Owl Awards shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide next.

Drink + Stay, change section

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. A Bocci light sculpture of 480 illuminated leaves greets you at the door, which sets the tone for a Forbes Five Star hotel that takes its art program as seriously as its harbor views. Rooms lean Fairmont-traditional with marble bathrooms and Stearns & Foster beds, while the waterfront tower frames Stanley Park and the North Shore mountains in one sweep. Several restaurants and bars on site, including Vancouver's first fully sustainable sushi bar.

  2. The bar at Botanist sits just inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim, intimate and posh enough that dressing up feels like the point. This is fine dining with a serious cocktail program, and the drinks lean into a nature-obsessed identity, including a glass-fronted lab where the team produces things like a martini built with kombu and sea asparagus. North America's 50 Best Bars placed it at number 38. The kitchen behind it runs hyper-local West Coast tasting menus alongside à la carte.

  3. Rank 2. Prophecy

    Cocktail Bar

The basement of Hotel Georgia has cycled through a jazz bar, a techno club, and a medieval pub before landing here, which feels like an upgrade for everyone involved. Prophecy is a cocktail bar with serious intentions: drinks that look effortless and take months to develop, a mood-coded menu, and digital art shifting on the walls. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list. Come dressed; this one earns the low lighting.

  4. Marlene Dietrich once checked in here with forty suitcases, which sets the tone nicely. The Rosewood Hotel Georgia is a grand downtown Vancouver hotel that has been around forever, and its dark-wood lobby still carries that old Hollywood weight. Rooms run to Italian linens, heated bathroom floors, and Bose systems; the top suites add private rooftop plunge pools. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys, and it holds a Forbes Four Star.

  5. Rank 2. Suyo

    Peruvian

The whitewashed facade on Main Street gives nothing away, but inside, tall tropical plants and plush seating set the mood for modern Peruvian fine dining done without a trace of fuss. The kitchen runs citrus-bright ceviches and tiraditos alongside bolder, earthier plates, and the bar program is the kind that earns its own reputation. A Michelin Selected restaurant with a AAA Four Diamond rating.

  6. Rank 2. The Keefer Bar

    Chinese Cocktail Bar

Backlit anatomical illustrations and a menu titled "Prescriptions and Antidotes" set the tone at this Chinatown cocktail bar, where traditional Chinese medicine drives the drink program. Bamboo liqueur, motherwort, and tofu turn up alongside baijiu and rum in combinations that shouldn't work but do. The ice is carved in-house, the DJs are good, and North America's 50 Best Bars has it at number seven.

  7. The green copper roof has been a downtown Vancouver landmark forever, and the stone façade still holds its own against the glass towers that have since crowded in. This grande dame hotel sits in the center of it all, walking distance from Gastown and the waterfront, with Art Deco detailing in the rooms and an afternoon tea that feels genuinely unhurried. A Forbes Four Star property, selected by the Michelin Guide.

  8. Sitting next to Blood Alley in Gastown, L'Abattoir leans into its address with a quasi-industrial room that somehow feels warm the moment you walk in. It's a relaxed fine dining spot built around French technique and local West Coast ingredients, and the Michelin Guide has taken notice. Grab a bar seat downstairs if you didn't book; the kitchen view is part of the deal. The team took Vancouver Magazine's Chef of the Year in 2024, and the cooking has kept pace since.

  9. Rank 9. Bagheera

    Indian-inspired Cocktail Bar

The entrance is a horse-race bookie front, and you have to place a bet on King Louie to get through the door. Inside, this Indian-inspired cocktail bar has a barrel-shaped ceiling studded with horseshoes and palm-tree wallpaper that lands somewhere between Victorian colonial club and Jungle Book fever dream. The cocktails lean into the conceit, with spiced spirits, pistachio orgeat, and coconut ginger tea doing most of the convincing. North America's 50 Best Bars has it at 59.

  10. The room arrives before the menu does: red-tinged lighting, curves everywhere, the kind of design that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion. June is a French bistro and serious cocktail bar on Cambie that landed at number 17 on North America's 50 Best Bars and fourth on Canada's 100 Best new restaurants in the same year, which is a neat trick. The food runs to butter-heavy, comforting bistro standards; the drinks list is the other reason to come.

  11. Burnt-orange carpets, vintage TV sets, and retro beer signs set the scene at this cocktail bar on Mount Pleasant's quieter side, where the decor reads like your grandparents' basement but the drinks are anything but. The bar landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, and the cocktail program earns it, with clarified Greek yogurt turning up in tequila drinks and mezcal slushies arriving alongside tater tots in tin lunch boxes.

  12. Rank 12. Good Thief

    Vietnamese

Pull back the velvet curtain and you're inside the world of nhậu, the Vietnamese tradition of drinking and eating with friends until things get blurry. Good Thief is a cocktail bar and restaurant on Main Street, the self-described rebellious younger sibling to Anh and Chi next door. The drinks lean boldly Vietnamese, the food runs from binchotan skewers to Dungeness crab garlic noodles, and the whole menu is designed to share. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  13. Rank 12. Laowai

    Shanghainese Speakeasy

The entry is a freezer door inside a Chinatown dumpling shop, and it only opens if you order dumpling No. 7. What's behind it is a speakeasy done up in teal and gold, channeling 1920s Shanghai with enough sincerity to pull it off. The bar carries over fifty baijiu bottlings, the largest selection in Canada, and the cocktails are built around the spirit rather than just gesturing at it. North America's 50 Best Bars has it at number 72.

  14. Arthur Erickson's twisting downtown skyscraper is an unlikely host for a hotel that seems determined to keep you out of your room. A lobby pool table, nightclub, high-end Chinese restaurant, and rooftop-adjacent lounge make the public floors feel like the whole point. The 147 rooms vary in shape because the building does too, but all get leather headboards, wood floors, and floor-to-ceiling city views. Forbes Four Star, if you want the shorthand.

    The awards

  15. Two copper-toned glass towers rise over the edge of Yaletown, standing out from the steel-gray skyline in a way that feels either bold or slightly overdressed, depending on your mood. The hotel itself has 329 rooms, a Spa by JW, an executive lounge, and enough meeting space to host a small nation's parliament. BC Place is steps away, and the casino is on-site, so guests are rarely short of somewhere to be.

    The awards

  16. Rank 15. Lala

    Cocktail Bar

You reach Lala by walking through the brasserie upstairs and following the crowd toward the back, which is either mysterious or a fire-hazard joke depending on your mood. In the basement, a cocktail bar waits with velvet curves, a golden glow, and retro speakers that actually earn the decor. Vinyl DJs spin nightly, and the bar team turns out drinks with real invention, bottled cocktails and mezcal-spiked riffs among them. Ranked 19th on Canada's 100 Best Bars list.

  18. No two rooms share the same floor plan in this 65-room boutique hotel, a side effect of the heritage building it lives in. The common areas double as gallery space for a serious modern art collection, and the business district address puts you close to everything without the convention-hotel anonymity. Gotham Steak House is on-site when you want a drink and a steak without leaving the building. Staff have been known to arrange bicycles for the seawall.

    The awards

  19. The wine merchant boutique off the lobby sets the tone: this is a downtown Vancouver hotel that takes its European clubhouse fantasy seriously. Dark wood, warm lighting, and old-world touches give the rooms and lounge a different register than the glass-tower norm. A spa, indoor pool under a sunroof, and a personal concierge round out the comforts, and the business and shopping district sits right outside.

    The awards

  20. Blinds, curtains, and the fleeting Vancouver sun: all managed from the bedside panel without disturbing your sheets. This contemporary luxury hotel occupies fifteen floors of a mixed-use skyscraper, which means it plugs into the city rather than sealing itself off from it. Rooms run large, suites have balconies over West Georgia, and the bathrooms come with mirror-mounted screens and multi-head showers. A Michelin Key, a spa, and a northern Italian restaurant round things out.

    The awards

  21. A Coal Harbour boutique hotel in a sleek glass tower, the Loden holds a Michelin Key and earns it partly through geography: this corner of downtown sits like stadium seating for the Burrard Inlet panorama. Rooms run from understated to a suite with a wraparound terrace for serious mountain-gazing, all tied together by mid-century touches, a muted regional palette, and deep soaking tubs that make sense the moment Vancouver's famous drizzle sets in.

    The awards

  22. Persian rugs, carved stone at reception, and antique furnishings that feel genuinely inherited rather than sourced, the Wedgewood is a privately owned boutique hotel on Robson Square, family-run since the beginning. Rooms have dark wood paneling, marble baths, and balconies overlooking the mountains or the gardens below. The piano lounge, done in Venetian style with Murano glass and a limestone fireplace, earns its place as the hotel's social heart. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

    The awards

  23. The Vancouver Stock Exchange's 1929 shell now anchors a skyscraper hotel in the financial district, and the Art Deco bones are very much still flexing. EXchange Hotel Vancouver is a full-service luxury stay where the interiors read glamorous without tipping into theatrical, and the rooms work equally well for a romantic weekend or a polished work trip. The Martini Rooms come with in-room self-serve bars, which either sounds like a perk or a liability depending on who's paying.

    The awards

  24. Fireplaces come standard in most rooms, which tells you something about where L'Hermitage sits on the downtown Vancouver hotel spectrum. It's a small luxury hotel on Richards Street, clean-lined and coolly styled without reaching for anything avant-garde. Marble baths, king beds, and suites with full kitchens and in-unit laundry make it feel less like a hotel stay and more like borrowing a very well-appointed friend's apartment.

    The awards

  25. Bold colors and Frette linens fill a boutique hotel that sits squarely in Yaletown, where the cafes, galleries, and restaurants make the central business district feel like a punishment. The brick facade softens the contemporary building from the outside, and the renovated rooms come with Herman Miller chairs and Malin + Goetz products for people who notice those things. Capo does wood-fired pizza; the Spritz bar pulls in locals alongside guests most nights of the week.

    The awards

  26. Getting here requires a seaplane over Desolation Sound or a boat past seal colonies, which sets the tone nicely. This remote, seasonally open luxury resort is the only property on Sonora Island, a cedar-and-stone collection of timber lodges with mineral pools, fly-fishing ponds, and a spa. Rooms have picture windows over the sea, and a few villas perch directly on the rocks. Bald eagles turn up at dinner without being invited.

    The awards

  27. Glass tower next to BC Place, the Douglas is a luxury hotel that splits the difference between slick modernism and loft-industrial warmth. It sits inside the Parq Vancouver complex, so the list of bars, restaurants, and a casino sprawls well beyond the hotel itself. The spa and fitness center are expansive, and the Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels. Good base camp if you want Yaletown walkable but don't need to be inside it.

    The awards

  28. Natural wine bar in South Granville with a list that rotates fast enough to keep the regulars guessing. Grapes & Soda was an early champion of biodynamic and natural labels in Vancouver, and the backbar backs it up with small-batch local spirits and a solid run of bottles from Mexico. The room fits exactly one bartender, so some ingredients come pre-batched, which keeps things moving without losing the plot.

  30. The two-sided fireplace in the center of the room does a lot of heavy lifting at this sleek hotel lounge inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim. Pull up a seat at the marble bar or grab one near the stage for nightly live music, and order from a sushi-focused menu that leans on local salmon and steelhead. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and the crowd dressed just well enough to be here tends to linger.

  31. The tartare here arrives bright with herbs and anchovy salt, which tells you most of what you need to know about Chez Céline's register. It's a French bistro and bar on Fraser Street, the kind of neighbourhood spot that somehow also reads as subtly refined, in the Quebec casse-croûte tradition. J-C Poirier and Margaux Herder's room is cozy without being sleepy, and the cocktail program is serious enough to earn a Spirited Awards regional nod.

  32. The tallest building in Surrey puts every room well above the low-rise sprawl, with views stretching to the North Shore mountains that most Vancouver hotels can only hint at. This Autograph Collection hotel keeps the rooms crisp and minimalist, the service professional. Downstairs, Dominion Bar & Kitchen handles New Canadian cooking while Prado Cafe covers the morning coffee crowd. A solid base for exploring the wider metro without fighting downtown Vancouver for a parking spot.

  33. Preservation jars line the shelves as decor, which tells you something: this Michelin-starred fine dining room on Main Street ferments, forages, and pickles its way through the seasons before a single plate reaches the table. Chef Gus Stieffenhofer-Brandson weaves Manitoba roots and Nordic technique into a deeply West Coast menu, and the bar crowd ordering à la carte gets the same serious treatment as the tasting menu pilgrims. North America's 50 Best lists it at number seventeen.

  35. The fridges here run deep with natural, low-intervention, and unfiltered wines from B.C. and further afield, and the staff will pop a cork in your direction before you've even settled in. Bar Tartare is a wine bar tucked inside the Birds and the Beets cafe on Alexander, with a short food menu anchored by the tartare the name promises. Guest chefs rotate through on nights, so the kitchen is never quite the same twice.

  36. Marble floors, a signature Indian jasmine scent piped through the air, and live music three times a day set the tone for this hotel lobby bar inside one of Vancouver's glossier addresses. It's the kind of place where the city's famously casual dressing meets conspicuous chandeliers and nobody seems bothered by the contradiction. On weekend nights after ten, the potted plants reportedly double as a dance floor, so plan accordingly if you came to drink seriously.

  37. Rank 42. Pourhouse

    Cocktail Bar

A Douglas Fir bar that's been around forever runs nearly wall to wall, and the waistcoated bartenders working it keep classic cocktails moving at a clip that suggests they've never had a slow Tuesday. This Gastown cocktail bar pulls off a London pub atmosphere in a city that usually splits the difference between restaurant and lounge, with leather booths and deep couches upstairs for the chattier end of the crowd.

  39. Rank 42. West

    Wine Bar

Ten stools, two bartenders, and a wine wall that takes itself seriously without making you feel like you should too. West is a wine bar on Granville that embodies what Vancouver does well: high-touch without the starch. The bartenders have been here long enough to know what you want before you do, and afternoons are unhurried, though weekend evenings pack the room two deep with the pre-dinner crowd treating it as a destination in itself.

  40. Rank 46. Clough Club

    Cocktail Bar

The curvy white marble bar anchors one corner of a room that looks like it's been pleasantly roughed up by a century of good times, tiled floor and all. Clough Club is a cocktail bar with genuinely progressive drinks, which sets it apart from the group's other spots. Upholstered benches and club chairs line the walls, a tall marble table invites standing rounds in the middle, and the whole thing reads less like a design statement than a place people actually like drinking in.

  43. Rank 50. Buckstop

    Barbecue

Antler chandeliers and flickering candles light a narrow, 32-seat bar in the West End that smells like barbecue and stays open until 2am with a full kitchen running the whole time, which is rarer in Vancouver than it should be. Rock and blues play loud enough that you lean in to talk, and at the chatty bar you'll have made friends before the second round arrives. A genuinely un-Vancouver-ish room, in the warmest possible sense.

  44. Rank 50. El Caminos

    Mexican Cocktail Bar

House margaritas come in mugs here, which tells you most of what you need to know about El Caminos. This Mexican cocktail bar on Main Street does the Pacific Northwest version of a dive, all shabby-chic surfaces and pan-Latin classics poured without ceremony. Locals pack it out on weekends and Margarita Mondays draw a crowd that tends to spill onto the sidewalk, so come early or come patient.

  45. Brick walls, Edison bulbs, and wooden shelves set the cocktail-bar mood, then the flat-screens and thumping house music cheerfully undermine the whole thing. The Granville Room sits on Vancouver's neon-lit strip and leans into it: twenty- and thirty-somethings come here to drink with intention, share some bar food, and not overthink it. Call it a party pub wearing a speakeasy costume, and you've got it about right.

  46. Rank 50. The Refinery

    Cocktail Bar

A flight of stairs off Granville Street leads to a low-lit cocktail lounge where nearly everyone is sitting down, cocktail in hand, which sets the mood right away. The team makes their own syrups, vermouths, and preserves for drinks built around local ingredients, and a charcuterie-heavy menu keeps people at the table long enough to order another round. Communal tables and upbeat music give it a party-at-a-friend's-place feel.

  47. A semi-circular tiki bar tucked inside the Waldorf Hotel's entertainment complex on East Hastings. The room is built around a big, curved bar with a red top and a mirror wall behind it that bounces the whole scene back at you. Tiered tables ring the outer edge, leaving floor space for when things get crowded. It shares the building with restaurants and live music venues, so some nights come with a cover; earlier in the week it runs as its own thing, free to wander into.

    Seafood

The dry-aged fish program is the detail that separates this buzzy Fraser Street seafood spot from every other neighborhood bar doing a raw bar. The menu is small and shifts often, but the cooking stays bold and punchy, from hiramasa with aguachile to squid tagliolini that goes places pasta doesn't usually go. Vancouver Magazine gave it gold for both informal dining and seafood, and the Michelin Guide has taken notice too. Service is friendly without being precious.

    Japanese

Upstairs in a Chinatown walkup, rose banquettes and antique Japanese panels recreate the jazz cafés of 1960s Tokyo, which is a strange and perfect setting for a Michelin-starred restaurant fusing Japanese and Italian cooking. The kitchen plays it straight: hand-cut pasta with miso-cured egg yolk and parmesan, tiramisu made with plum wine-soaked tofu. 58. The savory éclair filled with duck liver mousse has become something of a calling card here, and it explains a lot about the place. St. Lawrence is an elegant Québécois French tasting restaurant with a convivial front bar, a semi-open kitchen, and a Michelin star. The fixed menu rotates by season, sometimes leaning into sugar shack classics, sometimes into French bourgeois cooking, always with sauces that deserve more attention than they get.

  61. Sunchoke with salal berry and burnt onion isn't a dish you'd find yourself ordering on instinct, which is part of the point at this creative vegetarian fine-dining room in Mount Pleasant. The kitchen names its organic BC suppliers on the menu and takes texture as seriously as flavor. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and first-timers tend to do well surrendering to the tasting menu rather than pretending they know what salal berry tastes like.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
