  1. Rank 1. Chaoran

    Cantonese

A Cantonese restaurant on the fifth floor of Signiel Busan, with floor-to-ceiling views over Haeundae and a room done up to evoke old Hong Kong, which is a lot to promise and a specific aesthetic to pull off. The dim sum leans seafood and mushroom, assembled with the kind of care that makes you slow down, and the barbecue pork with honey glaze has the lacquered sheen you'd cross a city for.

  2. Rank 1. Dim Tao

    Cantonese

A dim sum shop in the Haeridan-gil area, recognizable by the line that forms outside before you've even decided whether you're hungry. The menu stays focused: soup dumplings, shrimp and chive dumplings, wonton soup, barbecue pork buns, and tea, ideally pu'er or jasmine, because that's how this is supposed to go. Small plates, shared table, no agenda beyond the next bamboo steamer arriving.

  3. A cha chaan teng, the classic Hong Kong-style café, transplanted to Busan by someone who opened the place purely out of love for the city. The dishes lean Korean in seasoning, but the tomato noodle soup is deeply satisfying and the condensed-milk-glazed bread is hard to argue with. Nai cha and iced lemon tea round out a menu that reads like a Hong Kong fever dream filtered through a very affectionate lens.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
